Activision Blizzard Sued By California Over ‘Frat Boy’ Culture

Quote

Video game giant Activision Blizzard Inc., maker of games including World of Warcraft and Diablo, fosters a “frat boy” culture in which female employees are subjected to constant sexual harassment, unequal pay, and retaliation, according to a lawsuit filed by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing.

A two-year investigation by the state agency found that the company discriminated against female employees in terms and conditions of employment, including compensation, assignment, promotion, and termination. Company leadership consistently failed to take steps to prevent discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, the agency said.

The suit also points to a female Activision employee who took her own life while on a company trip with her male supervisor. The employee had been subjected to intense sexual harassment prior to her death, including having nude photos passed around at a company holiday party, the complaint says.

Something in the back of my head always makes me think that some of these workplaces can't be as outright absurdly bad as you always hear simply because I've never seen anything like it in my life. Then you read shit like this and it's just mindboggling to me that it can actually go down like that. Not that any workplace I've ever been at was even remotely flawless but what kind of fucking dump allows even 10% of the antics of places like this??

Absolutely appalling.

HR should be regulated so that it's outsourced to as neutral a third-party as possible (possibly anonymously, escalating things remotely to authorities) and claims are cross-checked by random HR employees to prevent shit like this from happening. Having internal HR is not and has never cut it.

This is sickening to read and yet isn't surprising at all.

Its abhorrence is beyond words.

All of those individuals should be shot.

Do I dare ask for a TL;DR? The post by @Amazatron was bad enough. How the fuck does not one guy see that being passed around, and not report it?

Yeah, I don't get it. Years back, I was appalled that some random VP thought he could yell at me. I thought that was a pretty shitty work environment. I've lost our on money and promotions because of racist bosses, and I thought those were shitty work environments. All of that pales compared to this. How fucked in the head do people have to be to think any of this is ok? None of these people should ever be allowed to work again. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing they were hired by my company and I'm not a woman. How does some of this behavior not end with you on a registry?

I work in Union construction so I've seen my share of macho shit over the years but I mean compared to this...lulz! And this is supposed to be that type of company run by cool, hip and modern people. Every time I read about work environments in the video game industry, it just sounds bad caricature levels terrible.

Boy color me shocked that HR protected the company and not the employees

that’s what HR does. It only protects an employee if doing so shields the company from possible liability. The level of shielding is often determined by a company’s management.

people get real shocked when they realize how much on the side of management/the company HR is and not an advocate for the employee.

Activision-Blizzard's official response to the lawsuit actually contains Trumpian language:

It is this type of irresponsible behavior from unaccountable State bureaucrats that are driving many of the State's best businesses out of California.

The “hey we used to be that bad but not anymore. We made changes” paragraph is so fucking ridiculous. The PR statement must have been written by a Fox News flunky.
