Keyser_Soze
Quote The creators behind the award-winning German series DARK, which received praise and excited fans around the world, have kicked off production for their next and highly anticipated show: “1899” The eight episodes follow the mysterious circumstances around the voyage of an immigrant ship from Europe to New York. The passengers, all of different backgrounds and nationalities, are united by their hopes and dreams for a new century and their future abroad. When they discover a second ship adrift on the open sea that had gone missing for months, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a nightmare-like riddle, connecting each of the passenger’s pasts through a web of secrets. Greatoneshere
Eh, Dark seasons 2 and 3 lost what made season 1 great. They were good, but it all became about timey-wimey stuff. All legit drama just went out the window, every conversation was an ominous one about the implications of time.

Greatoneshere
Dark was well made all the way through but it forgot about the characters after season 1 to obsess over timey-wimey stuff.

Season 2 still . . . tried, so I'm with you, but even then it expanded the cast too much, too many generations, and too many of them with plans on plans on plans. It felt like everything became exposition. Season 3 was easily the worst culprit, I agree.
Moa
I think Dark pivoted from doing one thing really well to doing another different thing also really well. This looks cool, the voiceover suggests strong existential/cosmic horror themes, and I think they could do it quite well. I feel like most cosmic horror stuff goes too hard on the tentacles and not hard enough on the dread of being very small in a very large universe. There’s way too much mediocre cosmic horror and not nearly enough good stuff.

Commissar SFLUFAN
I'm about halfway through the season and while I'm generally being entertained, I really gotta admit that it's a step down from Dark in a few respects, especially the characters who aren't particularly interesting at all. One aspect of the show that's really starting to annoy me are scenes where characters whose languages are mutually unintelligible are speaking to each other and one of them invariably says to the other one "I have no absolutely no idea what you're saying to me" or another similar phrase. This has now happened quite a few times during the course of these episodes and I'm finding it rather silly. As for the overall narrative, I'm pretty sure it's going down a very similar rabbit hole to that of Dark, but it's doing so with a bit less grace and subtlety.

Well some things transcend language As for the characters not being interesting, they are interesting in a way of they are an odd mix of people but rather ordinary. How can you not like Olek though? Anyway I wanted to say this show is a slow burn, I guess, but like I said somehow you're compelled to see what's next each episode.
Bloodporne
I just finished episode 2 and I generally like it and like the sense of paranoia and dread. The "ghost ship" is also very eerie. Definitely some gripes though... First of all, I can't stand the usage of White Rabbit in this. Be it the insanely bad cover of it in the show intro or them using that and/or Deep Purple anachronistically. This kind of leads straight into me fearing what's to come after seeing those modern CRT monitors at the end of episode 2. I like the ghost ship mystery of the time period. I'm actually intrigued by the characters and their various predicaments and issues more so than whatever annoying "it's a simulation" or whatever twist is lurking around the corner. It's definitely not nearly as "oh wow" exciting as Dark was even within the first episode. I hope they don't M. Night Shyamalan themselves. This show does certainly create a sense of anxiousness throughout. I do enjoy that. I'm with you with the retro songs. I thought it was clever the first time but the end every episode I've seen so far (4 of them) with some '70s psychedelic rock song.

White Rabbit especially is extremely cliched. I mean I like all these songs, especially Child In Time by Deep Purple, but it just feels annoyingly out of place to me. It works in certain films/shows but here, it just pulls me out of the mood.

Mercury33
Through two episodes and I’m enjoying it. I don’t find the characters to be boring at all. I will echo the dislike for what you see at the end of the episode 2. I LOVE the actual setting and the mystery of a Ghost Ship(one that gives off an excellent Event Horizon vibe). I’m gonna be so annoyed if that implied twist happens.

Just finished episode 5 I think and the more it goes on, the more I lose interest. It's been starting to feel dragged out with too many scenes of dramatic yelling and soft weeping and characters magically understanding each other when it suits the plot...there are no peaks and valleys either. It's not bad but I'm just kind of growing tired of it. Also don't really like where this has been going story-wise (without spoiling anything). And again, I absolutely hate that opening intro lol. I can't hit skip fast enough. PS: Why does nobody ever try to point, use their hands or whatever to communicate!? They just shout at each other in whatever language followed by a shot of others staring. It's frustrating in some weird way.

Because yea. How many times Franz suddenly appeared to understand Norwegian (??) out of the blue was impressive. Also captain yelling in English and the entire lunch room is like "RARARARA" and suddenly understands some entire manifesto of revolt. Bloodporne
I'm watching episode 6 and man, this show really needs to get off its ass and into gear. They are draaaaaagging this out. I cared about these characters but not each one of them needs the same ultra-slow revelation with lots of confused walking around. It's one of those shows where I just want to start yelling WALK FASTER at them constantly.

I thought this was a pretty amusing post from ResetERA: Spoiler I find it hilarious that if you add the runtime of people running into a room, opening a hole in a wall or furniture, and getting inside, it would probably amount to a full episode. It's absolutely bonkers that they show these scenes over and over again, sometimes in quick succession and into the same place. It has to be because of filler and reshoots or something else. I have never seen anything like this.
Bloodporne
2 hours ago, Commissar SFLUFAN said: I thought this was a pretty amusing post from ResetERA: No seriously, the repetition really stands out to me. It's like the show constantly retreads the same type of scene and actions and it's frustrating. It's an INTERESTING show but there's a lot about it that squanders my good will and interest. Also, the characters are essentially mostly the same and we see their "path to the revelation" the same way several times. We don't need to see the same "oh lord what is happening to me 🤔" with trap doors and cabin rooms and flashbacks over and over in detail. Funny thing is this show makes me think it would've been a way more interesting 2-1/2 hour movie or something. I'm about to watch the last episode and it really spent a monumental amount of time on the exact same thing. It essentially was revealed what was coming by the end of EPISODE FUCKING TWO and if you boil it down, by end of Ep 7 the plot really hasn't moved forward. We're still at the same cryptic hodgepodge of details without going further up the ladder of the mystery. It's like they took a great Twilight Zone or Black Mirror episode and big brain'd it into 8 tedious hours.
Mercury33
I hadn’t moved on from episode 2 because that reveal at the end pissed me off so much.
