Pictures on social media showed Taliban members standing in front of the gate of the Panjshir provincial governor’s compound after fighting over the weekend with the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan (NRFA), led by Panjshiri leader Ahmad Massoud

Unrest grows as more Afghans demand women's rights and chant anti-Taliban and anti-Pakistan slogans.

The Taliban have fired warning shots to disperse the crowd at a large protest in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Video footage from the scene shows people running to safety, while heavy gunfire can be heard in the background.

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets on Tuesday to denounce Taliban rule and demand women's rights.

Protesters also chanted anti-Pakistan slogans, as many believe neighbouring Pakistan supports the Taliban, which the country denies.

Iran on Monday “strongly” condemned the Taliban’s military offensive against holdout fighters in Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley, as the Islamist group claimed that it had taken control of the area.

“The news coming from Panjshir is truly worrying,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told reporters. “The assault is strongly condemned.”

The Taliban have declared an Islamic Emirate (just like the last time they were in charge) and announced their government:

  • Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund, an associate of the movement's late founder Mullah Omar, is to lead the government as acting prime minister
  • Taliban co-founder Abdul Ghani Baradar will be deputy leader
  • The son of Mullah Omar, Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, has been named defence minister
  • Sarajuddin Haqqani, son of the founder of the Haqqani network - designated as a terrorist organization by the United States - will be the new interior minister
  • Abas Stanikzai will be deputy foreign minister

National cricket team included in prohibition, as interim government containing no women starts work

Afghan women, including the country’s women’s cricket team, will be banned from playing sport under the new Taliban government, according to an official in the hardline Islamist group.

In an interview with the Australian broadcaster SBS, the deputy head of the Taliban’s cultural commission, Ahmadullah Wasiq, said women’s sport was considered neither appropriate nor necessary.

“I don’t think women will be allowed to play cricket because it is not necessary that women should play cricket,” Wasiq said. “In cricket, they might face a situation where their face and body will not be covered. Islam does not allow women to be seen like this.

I thought this was more a cultural issue and not a religious one?  There are plenty of Muslim majority countries where women do not have to completely cover their bodies.

It's probably a combination of both Pashtun culture and a very hardline interpretation of sharia.

Including Indonesia, home to nearly 13% of all the world's muslims. India, which is home to another 11% of the world's Muslims, had a study that said about two thirds of Muslim women report wearing burqas, though the study does say that it didn't define what it meant by a burqa, so it might have been up to interpretation. At any rate, Muslim women in India to not HAVE to wear them. In Nigeria, home to another 5% of the world's Muslims, there have been many efforts to ban hijabs and burqas, though Nigeria is nearly 50/50 Muslim/Christian, with most people at the top of national government being Christian.

Turkey (4.5% of the world's Muslims) is the only majority Muslim state that actually *bans* women who work in public sectors from wearing any type of head covering. Lawyers, teachers, civil servants, etc.

So, all in all, roughly a third of all the world's Muslims live in majority Muslim countries* that do not require women to cover their faces/bodies, and a couple even outright ban the practice.

*correction as I'm typing this - India is not a majority Muslim country, they just have, like, a lot of people.

I imagine we're going to see more and more of that as news agencies basically fired their news staff and contract out to the lowest bidder (or encourage volunteer reporting). We started to see this happening during the very first Gulf War and as graphics for games become more and more realistic, we're definitely going to see news agencies including a lot of that footage, even if they're completely unaware they're doing it. I've actually seen Fallout 4 footage shots appear in regular news stories that really can't seem to tell the difference and kind of get away with it until some gamer chimes in.

A huge part of this problem is Adobe and Google footage that is easy to search and just as easily capable of being mixed with real world footage.

Zebulon Simentov endured decades of war but was warned he might be kidnapped or killed by IS
Quote

The last member of Afghanistan’s Jewish community has left the country.

Zebulon Simentov, who lived in a dilapidated synagogue in Kabul, kept kosher and prayed in Hebrew, endured decades of war as the country’s centuries-old Jewish community rapidly dwindled. But the Taliban takeover last month seems to have been the last straw.

Moti Kahana, an Israeli-American businessman who runs a private security group that organised the evacuation, said on Wednesday that the 62-year-old Simentov and 29 of his neighbours, nearly all of them women and children, have been taken to a “neighbouring country”.

Interestingly, he says that he had no issues with the Taliban during their last tenure in power.

Muslims and Jews lived together in Moorish Spain for 800 years without any major problems.

Oh sure - I'm very much aware of that, but my understanding is that the Moorish rulers -- especially those in Cordoba -- were more "tolerant" than the Taliban.

That's true. They were all mutts anyway and loved 👌👈. That's why there's no specific Sephardic gene like there are Ashkenazi ones.

Taliban officials say the group's co-founder left Kabul after an argument over the interim government.

A major row broke out between leaders of the Taliban over the make-up of the group's new government in Afghanistan, senior Taliban officials told the BBC.

The argument between the group's co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and a cabinet member happened at the presidential palace, they said.

There have been unconfirmed reports of disagreements within the Taliban's leadership since Mr Baradar disappeared from public view in recent days
