Manchin says there is ‘no circumstance’ where he would vote to get rid of or ‘weaken’ the filibuster, opposes using reconciliation to even pass the infrastructure bill.

Manchin urged big-money donors with No Labels to talk to Sen. Roy Blunt about flipping his vote on the commission in order to save the filibuster.

The meeting was hosted by the group No Labels, a big money operation co-founded by former Sen. Joe Lieberman that funnels high-net-worth donor money to conservative Democrats and moderate Republicans.

Not to dwell on the point very long, but could it be that our esteemed turtle doesn't know what is in the constitution?!?

Wait, does that mean the US federal government could theoretically hold federal elections, and take the power away from states (or, more precisely, dictate how the states hold their elections, in order to make them all uniform)?

Yes.  Federal elections are technically completely separate from elections for state and local offices.  It's that in practice they are all put together into one election.

Interesting. So maybe there is a small chance the US could enter the 20th Century at some point and have an independent body run the federal election. In Canada our federal election is never at the same time as provincial or municipal. You go into a booth and check a single box (in the US it would obviously be 2-3 choices, depending on the year). But get rid of all the local referendum BS and make it easier for people to vote.

Yep. There was an effort in the past(and is coming back into style) to hold elections for state offices separately from federal ones so as to avoid federal regulations

In theory the 14th and 15th amendments give congress the power to regulate state and local elections (guarantee and equal protections clauses) but that probably won't fly under the conservative Roberts court

Americans support both items that Democrats want, and Americans also supported the COVID Relief Bill that Republicans want to siphon money from to "pay" for the infrastructure bill. Americans also booted Republicans out of power.

Makes sense that they should be giving considerably more.

Then again, making it easier to vote since voting is the most important thing we do shouldn't require "compromise." I feel like if the internet was around in the 18th century, someone would have made a meme about this and then applauded the 3/5ths compromise.

I don't think he is dumb. This is all just smoke and mirrors to make it looks like he gives a shit while he has a Koch bros job lined up after his term is over.

Manchin may not be dumb, but Barack Obama is doing his best to prove that he may very well be.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Tuesday that he will vote in favor of advancing a sweeping election bill after striking a deal with Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on a compromise

Quote

Under the deal, Manchin will provide a 50th Democratic vote on advancing the For the People Act, though it will still fail to overcome Tuesday's procedural hurdle because of a GOP filibuster that requires 60 votes. But being unified, Democrats hope, will keep the focus on GOP opposition to the bill.

my hate for Schumer is still justified. He’s a fucking idiot that has no interest in advancing the Democratic platform in any meaningful way.

I'm confused. He endorsed Manchin's bill. Stacey Abrams, whose work on voting rights has been phenomenal, also endorsed it. I'd say long game is likely to get Manchin to cave on the filibuster, but ending gerrymandering is one of the biggest deals I can think of.
