Ricofoley
Nancy Pelosi publicly trashed the Green New Deal when it was first announced, which was basically based around the last IPCC report, which had just come out. I think the number of the sitting politicians who actually believe in climate science as it currently exists--and not a rosier version of it where we can get some F-150 Lightnings on the road and turn on a couple of Carbon Capture machines and fix everything--is depressingly small. SaysWho?
Pelosi says she's disappointed the House won't do the full $3.5 trillion. The goal won't be to scale everything back, but more to remove certain pieces of the package to trim it down and keep the other stuff funded higher so they make a bigger impact: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi signals Democrats could cut major pieces of Biden's economic plan WWW.CNBC.COM Democrats are looking for ways to cut costs from their $3.5 trillion social safety net and climate bill in order to win votes. Quote Party leaders have acknowledged they will likely have to cut $1 trillion or more from their $3.5 trillion social safety net and climate proposal. Quote On Monday night, Pelosi signaled her party could opt to remove some policies from the proposal entirely while keeping others fully intact. “In order to pass both the Build Back Better Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill on time, it is essential that difficult decisions must be made very soon,” she wrote to House Democrats, referencing the two planks of Biden’s agenda. She continued: “Overwhelmingly, the guidance I am receiving from Members is to do fewer things well so that we can still have a transformative impact on families in the workplace and responsibly address the climate crisis: a Build Back Better agenda for jobs and the planet For The Children!” Quote As Democrats try to pass the legislation in the coming weeks, any effort to cut costs will come with significant tradeoffs. Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Pelosi said an enhanced child tax credit, expanded child care and universal pre-K “really go together.” Not the best outcome and a win for Manchin/Sinema's arbitrary demands, but probably the best way to go about doing the package considering the circumstances being what they are. The way I see it, the bill would be better bigger, but if they introduced whatever package comes out of this and voted on it as is (say a standalone child care bill, stand-alone universal pre-K, standalone paid leave, green energy investments), I'd say it's a big win, so the fact that we're looking at big expansions in a lot of areas with smaller majorities than 2009/2010 is significant. Ricofoley
Zero reason to be this insistent on passing infrastructure first unless your intention is to completely kill the reconciliation bill afterward.
SaysWho?
Pramila Jayapal says of reconciliation and infrastructure bills that Democrats "will get it done" - "The Takeout" WWW.CBSNEWS.COM On "The Takeout" podcast this week, the chair of the House Progressive Caucus joined Major Garrett to talk about the fate of two bills containing much of Biden's agenda. Quote Progressive Caucus Chair Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal maintains that child care, Medicare expansion, prescription drug price limits, climate change, immigration, and affordable housing will remain in the slimmed-down social spending bill being negotiated between the White House and congressional Democrats. But she concedes some programs may have to be altered. "Those five priorities still need to be in any final bill," Jayapal told CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett in this week's episode of "The Takeout" podcast. She added, "You can significantly cut down on the price tag by funding some of these programs for a shorter period of time."

It's not about the miners, it's about the pitiful empire that manchin owns. Joe Manchin has made $5.2M from his coal company — and gets big donations from fossil-fuel industry | Salon.com WWW.SALON.COM Senator blocking Biden's agenda has gotten rich off coal, and takes more fossil-fuel money than any other Democrat Quote Enersystems represents a staggering 71 percent of Manchin's investment income, according to FinePrint. It accounts for 30 percent of his net worth. His stake in the company is worth as much as $5 million. Manchin, in other words, has a vested interest in creating policies to keep coal profitable.
