Jeep has been using Cherokee as a model name since the mid-1970s, but its next generation of vehicles arrives during a heightened national discussion of racial and social justice issues.

"Our vehicle names have been carefully chosen and nurtured over the years to honor and celebrate Native American people for their nobility, prowess, and pride.

Cobb-Greetham, who is a member of Chickasaw Nation and stresses the Cherokee Nation's sovereignty in choosing how to respond to the use of its own name, takes a different view: "If you're going to honor somebody, give them an award. If you're going to name a product after them, you're selling."

I just don’t understand bullshit like this.  Does brand loyalty actually vanish when you rename something and change nothing else?  Would previous Cherokee owners become confused and disoriented?  Who fucking cares what it’s called?

A large amount of people place a disturbing amount of their identity in the brands they use.

Every brand or sports team that uses a Native American name (or any other stereotype) should see the writing on the wall and be preparing for the day they have to change... and/or just do the right thing and change yourself.

It's going to happen eventually, just rip off the band aid.

Putting Jeep owners into the “right wing MAGA” camp is pretty bizarre. Jeep and it’s image isn’t anywhere close to that and outside of the Grand Cherokee being kind of a soccer mom vehicle they most closely associate with the extreme sports out door crowd. That group is about as far from MAGA as you get for the most part.
