Texas Republicans on blackouts: Liberal politicians, Obama, and free market are to blame!

Turns out JIT isn't robust.

I wonder, is there any appetite from Texas politicians to force utilities to build and maintain massive and expensive holding tanks? Because I can guarantee they won't do this on their own.

I’m seeing people who I would never have thought would suggest government regulation as the answer saying indeed that government regulation is the answer here. But easier to think that right now when your 4000 sqft house in a nice suburb has been without power for 2.5 days. Doubt that fervor stays around once everybody* is back to normal.

This is a textbook case of why strong regulation is required in any free market. The market will do the least effort possible to keep things running unless it is forced to put extra safeguards in place. There should be reserve storage tanks for these plants, as well as winterized facilities.

More than that, though, there should be additional plants that are not relied on, but are in place to be brought online in high-load situations. This is the future. Much of our regular power will come from solar and wind (and other green sources), but we will always need back-up sources to supplement green power when the load is high or generation is low. But owning idle plants isn't profitable, which is why they need to be owned by the government. But that is just offloading costs (and keeping regular profits private), so the real solution is nationalizing all power generation and delivery.

You can tell this guy doesn’t do cars because his analogy is backwards.  An ‘05 Sonata is going to work and Lamborghini is not it Italian for “reliability.”  America is absolutely a Lamborghini; a passion project of a European spun off from another larger entity mostly out of spite that has now become a subsidiary of larger corporate interests which is primarily only good for being loud and bringing attention to itself while largely being piloted by white assholes with too much money.

Things are getting real. While I have no electricity, I still have gas to cook and keep the water hot. However, our county is running out of natural gas as well. I have enough propane to maybe cover 2 days of cooking.

neighbors are starting to beg for food supplies and firewood. People are basically burning their recycling now.

He is wrong. It erases the *millions* of people who don't support these ghouls, and the people most likely to get hurt the worst are those with more limited resources (who typically don't vote republican, if they vote at all)

Beyond what B_m just said, dunking on people who are literally freezing to death is...unpleasant to say the least.

Now-former Mayor Tim Boyd gave his entire town the kiss-off in the midst of a winter disaster in Texas that has left millions without power in freezing temperatures, telling residents that "The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!"

Let me hurt some feelings while I have a minute!! No one owes you are your family anything; nor is it the local government’s responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim it’s your choice! The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING! I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn handout! If you don’t have electricity you step up and come up with a game plan to keep your family warm and safe. If you have no water you deal without and think outside of the box to survive and supply water to your family. If you are sitting at home in the cold because you have no power and are sitting there waiting for someone to come rescue you because your lazy is direct result of your raising! Only the strong will survive and the weak will parish. Folks God has given us the tools to support ourselves in times like this. This is sadly a product of a socialist government where they feed people to believe that the FEW will work and others will become dependent for handouts. Am I sorry that you have been dealing without electricity and water; yes! But I’ll be damned if I’m going to provide for anyone that is capable of doing it themselves! We have lost sight of those in need and those that take advantage of the system and meshed them in to one group!! Bottom line quit crying and looking for a handout! Get off your ass and take care of your own family! Bottom line-DONT A PART OF PROBLEM, BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION!!

He resigned almost immediately after, once he found out that his little rant got his wife fired from her job, lmao.

So you're freezing to death, your pipes all burst, you can't leave your house cause the roads are covered in snow and ice, the hospitals barely have running water, at least your electric and gas bill is going to be cheap....ermmm...

Just an FYI: Griddy is a non-traditional provider that lets end users purchase wholesale electricity. The vaaaaaast majority of people have retail plans with fixed rates for kWh.

Man alive, I just checked my bill for the last 30 days and it was $166 for 1700ish kWh. The usage is higher than normal due to our house being electric heating as the alternative here is propane and it was a ton more expensive.

So do these massive spikes in rates kick down to people?  Like will a bunch of Texan have stupid high bills come next month?

Just checked my power bill for last month, and I used 492 kWh for a cost of $101.06. This also includes a carbon tax (which is refunded at the end of the year from the government):

Days: 28

Electricity: $92.79 (base $22.79)

Municipal charge: $9.60

Economic Recovery Rebate: -$9.28

GST: $4.64

Carbon Tax: $3.15

Carbon Tax GST: $0.16

So the actual cost per kWh is $0.14228 ($0.11 USD)

This is ours:

Electric Consumption 1,703.000 kWh x 0.08581 146.13
Temp. Green Power Financing 1,703.000 kWh x 0.00089 1.52
Renewable Energy Program 1,703.000 kWh x 0.00249 CR 4.24 CR
Energy Efficiency Charge 1,703.000 kWh x 0.00195 3.32
Natural Disaster Protection Plan 1,703.000 kWh x 0.00025 0.43
Basic Service Charge 15.25
Local Government Fee 2% 3.25
Universal Energy Charge 1,703.000 kWh x 0.00039 0.66
Total Electric Service Amount $166.32

About 2 years before we moved here there was no electric bills as the military base provided power to the town. Then Sierra Nevada Power bullied in saying it was unfair and ended that.
