We have a pistol safe in my night stand next to the bed, but all of our other guns are unloaded, and (when possible) partially disassembled, sitting inside a locked gun safe.  We also regularly go shooting with our daughter.  If you are going to have weapons in the house, everyone should know how to use them safely.  Never teaching kids gun safety if you keep guns in the house is a recipe for disaster.

Agreed. Growing up my dad had a .44 magnum that I only ever saw 2 or 3 times. But knowing it was in the house and knowing I wasn't supposed to ever touch it, actually made me want to search it out. As a kid when nobody was home, I remember randomly spending a few minutes looking for it just out of boredom.  Had he taught me about guns as a kid I wouldn't have had the curiosity about it.

As someone who has had loaded guns pointed at him more than once growing up, in an area where gun ownership was common, and where kids were taught responsible gun ownership from a young age, I can assure everyone that homes with guns and children are significantly less safe than their owners think they are. I’m not talking about dum dums who kept loaded guns just laying about, I’m talking about homes where guns and ammo were kept locked up, often in separate storage. The parents in both of these homes where I had guns pointed at me as a joke would never have believed that their kids (or their kids’ friends, in one case!) would have had access to their guns, and they’d be wrong. As I’ve said here before, a safety is the only reason I didn’t get my head blown off my shoulders with a shotgun while I was in high school.

And if you’re thinking, “not my kids, not in my house,” well, that’s what these parents thought, too. You’re not as different from the parents I knew growing up as you think. It takes a few minutes’ worth of unsupervised time and bad judgment over the course of puberty and adolescence in your house, and if you think those are dice worth rolling I hope you never find your way to a casino floor.

lol

I doubt he's actually taking nursing classes at this point. And you have to be accepted into a program. Nursing is just as much about character as it is good grades and he clearly doesn't have the character to be a nurse. Who would want to hire him?

But as for college in general, he should be allowed to take online classes.

Maybe this whole experience has made him swear off violence and devote his life to saving lives rather than taking them?

Rittenhouse is a non-degree seeking student taking some nursing school pre-reqs through ASU’s online learning program. Definitely has not applied and been admitted to a nursing program.
