I played a round on Series S and it's pretty rough. Graphical glitches out the wazoo. Weird ones too that you wouldn't think would have made it this far into a build (even if it is "a few months old"). I'll be honest, and yes I know it's an old build, but I really expected it to look better on the Series S. At this point I don't even think it looks as good as Battlefield 1 or V did on the XBO. It looks like Battlefield 4. Like, if they were to drop in a map from BF4 it would look exactly the same.

There was no tornado in the round I played so I can't comment on how that looks. As it stands right now though, in my opinion if you don't have a Series X or PS5, this game might not be worth the premium $70 price tag.

Concerning the graphics it's important to remember that this game has twice the player count as the previous games, and much larger maps. That will impact how much more advanced they can make the visuals look.

I love Battlefield. Its my favorite shooter, but Im not 100% on this one.

theres obviously a massive amount of bugs, glitches and graphical issues, which Im hoping they get all squared away before launch.

I really dislike the on-the-fly attachment swap mechanic. Its the most arcadey thing Ive seen in any game, and BF is the last game I would expect it in.  Is there any weapon customization at all? You wouldve thought they would take a lesson from how wildly popular the CODMW19 weapon mod system is.

speaking of COD - this BF feels like its really trying to be COD. The movement and gunplay feels very similar to COD.

this game, just like BFV lacks the grittiness of BF1. Im not sure theyll ever re-create that, but im always going to compare every BF to that masterpiece of immersion.

The map feels too big, even with 128 players. There are times when youre just running from flag to flag and theres nothing going on. The BFV map sizes were good. I think with this increased player count, they dont need to be much larger than BFV.  Im not a huge conquest fan anyway, so hopefully operations will feel more focused and tighter.

i dislike the default controls. I know I can re-map them, but they suck outta the box.

ill still buy it and play it, but my excitement has been taken down a peg or 2.

@atom631

I knew that you're a HUGE Battlefield fan and I was waiting to hear your take on the game.

What you're saying mirrors what I'm reading in other places online as well - that something just feels "off" about the game that simply can't be attributed to technical glitches and bugs.

What you said about the map is a consistent theme: that it seems simultaneously "too big" and "not big enough" for all 128 players.  Another issue that @rc0101 pointed out was that the Specialist system really robs the classes of their uniqueness which has always been one of the main selling points of Battlefield.  Also, another complaint I've read is that the fluidity of the movement system appears to have definitely regressed in comparison to BFV.

Yes movement is worse. Now more throwing yourself to the side or back to dodge incoming firing. I heard ledge grabbing is gone as well.

As a Squad/Arma player I don't really mind the long walks.

My beef with the specialist is ammo is really hard to get and everyone looks the same. I only know who to shoot because of the red dot over enemies.

Balancing and player visibility are top concerns for the first big group trying out Battlefield 2042's specialist characters.

Battlefield 2042 feels like downgrade from Battlefield 5 in certain aspects, and it doesn't make much sense.

Perhaps specialists would work better as elite characters that you can spawn in as on your next respawn similar to how heroes work in Battlefront II where you spend points to call them in. Then have the generic soldiers be the defaults that are customizable per faction like how they are in BFV. The specialists could even have more health just so you don't get killed immediately and waste your points. Not a huge health boost, but enough that you won't immediately get spawn killed.

That's exactly what I thought they would be.

I'd suggest holding off to the release because it really does seem that this game is gonna be coming in "hot".

I can't shake the feeling that this will be really similar to the BF4 launch.

I think im going to cancel my pre-order as well.  Ive now played around 7-8 matches and it just feels off.

Ive heard good things about Insurgency and Hell Let Loose, and both are coming to console. Perhaps ill check them out and see how BF2042 pans out.

The change in "atmosphere" from BF1 to BFV was really jarring for me too.

BF1 really did have this sense of immersive grandeur (the stunningly beautiful scenic maps, the whistles going off at the start of the round, even the stupid Behemoths) that BFV SORELY lacked.

And quite honestly, I think I like that idea better. It would also suit the "lore" of this game where, I think, America and Russia are the only two super powers left, and they're fighting, but these No-Pats are basically mercenaries that aren't going to fight for their home country necessarily. They could keep the weapon agnosticism so if you wanted to be a recon with an SMG you could be, but still have classes that have access to specific gadgets for that class, like only medics could use med packs, that way you know who to ask for health. I could see them changing certain things like that for or post launch for balancing though. For example Falck is the medic class (although called support class in this game as it seems they've combined medic and support), but she's able to instead use a rocket launcher or ammo pack instead of a med pack, which just seems odd. Perhaps they will at some point make adjustments so that she can't use an ammo pack, but then again her gadget is the healing pistol so she can always heal you that way.

I don't know how I feel about the whole thing, but maybe DICE should keep classes as dedicated roles in the battle. Perhaps they should also not be afraid to have more than 4 classes. I know the old Battlefield games had many, like seven, but that was probably a little bloated, and probably for the best to consolidate some things. I know they probably want 4 classes so each squad can be balanced by each player picking one class, and with 128 players you can have evenly divided squads, but maybe it's time to move beyond this multiple of 4 for team sizes. I get it's probably harkening back to the days of 4 player split screen, but no one is playing a massive game like this in split screen, so why the weird player number of 128? I say bump it up to 150 players, allow 5 five man squads, and have 5 classes: Assault, Medic, Support, Engineer, and Recon. Assaults are good at making things go boom and taking out vehicles, Medics are good for healing you, Supports are good for replenishing your ammo, Engineers are good at fixing vehicles and disrupting enemy equipment, and Recons are good at scouting out the area. All this would make it so you can still have an evenly balanced squad, and evenly balanced teams of 75v75.

That being said though I am enjoying myself in the beta, but these are little things that annoy me because I can't help but wonder if they could be better.

Insurgency yes since the maps aren't huge. If BF2042 bothers you you are gonna hate Hell Let Loose. Alot of walking if there isn't a rally point set up.

Also as SFLj mentioned it's closer to a milsim then an arcade shooter like BF/COD. I prefer Post Scriptum bur I don't think that is on console. I should download it again for the ostfront though.

That it is.

@atom631 - just be forewarned that both Hell Let Loose and Insurgency are very much "hardcore war simulators" as opposed to something somewhat more "casual" like Battlefield.

good to know. Im def not a fan of milsim shooters and def perfer the more casual, fast paced games like COD and BF.

thats awesome Hell Let Loose is on Ps plus!

The pivot to specialists and away from classes is 100% an EA-directed move in order to sell more skins for weapons, etc. In the end there are going to be a tonne of nerfs anyway and the specialists won't be that different...so why even have them. Clearly the grapple guy is completely OP and will be picked by everyone, so they will nerf the grapple. If this is eventually going to happen...then just get rid of classes and everything, and let everyone choose any combination of weapons and perks and whatever.

And you know it's kind of annoying when I thought BFV had a pretty good cosmetic system, maybe not so much in how you unlocked cosmetics, but the actual system of having different options, and I was looking forward to seeing it refined in this. You had actual factions divided so you would know how to spot teammates and enemies just by the sight of them, not relying on the colour of their name, and then each class per faction could be customized how you want. Pick which soldier you want, pick your headgear, body, and pants. I know each of the specialists will get their own customizable outfits, and that will help avoid everyone playing that specialist looking exactly the same, but still.

@Commissar SFLUFAN @Zaku3 you were dead on with those games.

I actually like Insurgency, but holy fuck is the community toxic.

everything about Hell Let Loose’s presentation  is awesome, but actually playing the game is a slog. If feels like a running simulator and then you get OHK from some bush camper just as you get to the action. you need to get in with a group of players to have fun in this game for sure.

  • Commissar SFLUFAN changed the title to Battlefield 2042 (19 November 2021) - Information Thread, update: "Battlefield 2042’s Troubled Development and Identity Crisis"

Before it was even revealed I kept hearing that development was going well, and even ahead of schedule. What the hell happened?

I liked BFV well enough, but man did that game have issues, especially at launch, and some things just never truly got addressed (and the lack of any Eastern Front maps was tragic). I do not want a repeat of that.

Didn't Sweden not shut down for the pandemic, and instead just tell the elderly and vulnerable to isolate while the rest went about their day, albeit still social distancing? I'm not sure if things have changed there, but perhaps at one point they were ahead of schedule.

I only know they didn't do shut downs since all the Republican chuds kept going, "we should've done what Sweden did".

I swear I saw players' health sometimes though. Not all the time, which was weird, and at first I thought that is a feature that should be in, but then I later did see health bars.
