It’s very likely Battlefield 2042 will offer some sort of experience entirely for free, and some form of cross-platform play.

Seems like there are 2 other major modes coming, and one maybe a F2P model to compete with Warzone.

Would make a lot more sense.

That's too many. Maps still gonna be to big if there are that many people.

I have been waiting for this since BF2.

@Brick I could live with them doing that. BFV post launch support was too slow.

I really enjoyed the trailer. BF3 and BF4 are two of my most played multiplayer shooters ever.

I'm still unclear on the Specialist system. Are they like heroes in Battlefront 2 that you can call in, but you plays as a typical soldier or class until that point? Or this this more like Rainbow Six: Siege, where you *are* that Operator / Specialist?

I think its like R6 Siege. Only that your primary and secondary weapons are customizable.

Not really crazy about the idea of specialists and no proper factions. For all its faults I think Battlefield V had a good system with its customization where you could change up the look of each individual soldier per faction. I was looking forward to being able to do the game with this. I'm sure there will still be some customization for each specialist, but it's going to be weird playing as a certain specialist, and then seeing 3 others of the same on the enemy team.

Speculation is that they're going to have a Hunt/Tarkov-esque game mode rather than a battle royale, which sounds exciting to me as a fan of both of those games. I do think that format is the way forward for the broader BR genre.

Sounds like they're ditching the class system. Thank. God.

As in, a medic is no longer stuck using a shitty SMG, the engineer doesn't have that fucking shotgun, etc.

That's nice.  👌

I hope it turns out awesome. It always has a ton of potential.

Cross gen will probably fuck this game up. It'll be a mess I'm sure. Sorry for being negative.

Not so different from Battlefield 3 being fucked by the 360/PS3.  The "remastered" Karkand map for BF3 was actually SMALLER than Karkand in BF2.

And while the PC version could support 64+ players, the maps were clearly initially designed and planned out for the console-limiting 32 player matches.  And then they just added empty space to make it "bigger" on PC.

Ah so now medics will get yelled at for sniping instead of taking care of the wounded.

"Dude, stop camping and revive me!"

"Hold on, brah. Let me get off this sick headshot."

BF1 Medic Class

A class with heals that has sniper rifle

A class with heals that has a 2 shot mid range rifle

A class with heals that has a hip firing monster for short range

Dice is shit with balance and this one will  be no different

Never forget Battlefield Vietnam. I forgot the name of the class but it had LMGs plus AT.

How does it work in Tarkov? I'm a little familiar with Hunt but haven't played it (I hear it's basically a must with friends, not strangers).

Basically you load into a map with AI and other Humans.  You loot gear and items, then try to extract out with the loot you find.  You keep what you loot, but if you die, you lose everything you brought with you into that run.  So lots of risk reward, and extremely tense.

Battlefield 2042 is a radical return to the series' roots (Eurogamer)

Really, though, what could make this Battlefield stand apart isn't so much how it's moving forwards and more about how it's going back to what DICE does best and doubling down on it. There's no single-player campaign. There will be no battle royale. What there is, at first glimpse, is all the chaos, unpredictability and unprecedented scale that's at the heart of the series' appeal, dialled up to a new degree of intensity.

After watching the trailer I am convinced the game’s director is an 8 year old, who doesn’t understand military training and tactics, physics, and has a boring imagination for what technology will be like in 20 years, compared to today’s.

Speaking as someone who now works at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, I can all but assure that military technology in 20 years will pretty much be an advanced iteration on the technology we have today.

I.E. someone will take Boston Dynamics' Spot, put a gun on it, and voila: robot dog tank. BF2042 is right.

At some point though I'm sure DICE will make a follow up to 2142, so that they can take advantage of the further future and have things like the exo suits that are in development.

The things that stand out to me are the little bird. The Osprey could be replaced by then. The SU-57 and F35 are probably future variants.

I do wonder if the US gets an actual attack helo though. It might be a bit unbalanced to have a Little Bird as their Helo vs a Ka-50.

BF2 had that in a way the US had the Cobra while the MEC had the Mi-28. The Mi-28's autocannon was soo good. Way better then the 20mm cannon on the Cobra.

I’m guessing that it’s a Ka-52 Alligator which is dual-seat rather than the single-seat Ka-50 Black Shark.

But that would make the disparity between that and the Little Bird even more puzzling.

Mostly sounds good to me.

The experience that I enjoy in Battlefield is that I launch into a map and make a significant contribution to the team without being someone that'll win many 1-on-1 firefights. Capturing checkpoints, healing squad-mates, destroying or piloting vehicles, whatever. It sounds like that will be present, so I'll probably give it a go.

How far advanced do you really think 21 years will make military tech though? When Battlefield 4 came out in 2013 it took place in 2020, and I thought that was a bit too much of a forward leap in time for a modern military shooter because in seven years we might be using different equipment, like the M16 is replaced as the standard infantry rifle or something. Hell even MW2 came out in 2009, but took place in 2016 (another 7 year gap), but it at least had a couple things that could have been seen as possible advancements like heartbeat sensors (really just the motion trackers from Aliens, but whatever), and auto turrets. So 21 years is of course a much larger leap forward, but even still, major advancements in tech take a long time. Think back to how far military tech has advanced in 21 years to now. In the year 2000 we were kind of using the same stuff for the most part. There are some things sure, like I don't believe we had drones back then, but by and large I'm sure the differences are mostly small advancements in technology. So 2042 is just kind of seeing what is available now, and what 21 years could do, so things like the robot dog? Certainly possible. The one specialist that has that motion sensor as his trait? Yeah we could have that. Are we going to have jetpacks and mechs? Probably not.

If anything the thing to complain about would be the game using current modern day models for some of the equipment and vehicles that will probably be updated in 21 years, even if functionality is pretty much the same. Like are we really going to still be using that model of the FAST helmet, that model of Little Bird helicopters, or that model of tank? Again functionality and tech wise it might all be pretty much the same (so no hovering tanks), but the exact same model is weird. I do believe though that DICE has created some future weapons as some videos mentioned the M5 as a replacement for the M4A1.

If anything I think they named it 2042 just to keep it in line with the other names of the series with Battlefield 1942, and Battlefield 2142 without thinking too too hard about whether or not something is too far advanced, or not enough.

@Brick - These three prototypes are the candidates to replace the M4 and M249

The new weapons will bring the 6.8mm projectile into the U.S. military inventory for the first time.
