For the record, I had no idea we have a space laser.

SOUTHFIELD, MI—It is an hour past sunset on a brisk Thursday night, and, like their brethren around the globe, the Jews of this affluent Detroit suburb are gathered in synagogues, busily hatching plots for world domination through financial chicanery and media influence. But for Seth Nussbaum, it will be just another lonely evening.

Oh, wow, shocker, white conservative Christian doesn't understand swearing in ceremonies and tries to hate on Jews and Muslims while harassing children who survived a school shooting where they saw their friends and classmates shot and killed.

BUT UNITY

AND CIVILITY

I'm having flashbacks of reading Trump statements.  It's textbook Trump speak.  Every single word of it.

They hook these people in by saying "I'm one of you and WE ALL HATE CORPORATIONS TAKING OVER OUR LIVES."  This is the central, strong message, that, fuck, we on D1P can nod in agreement.  But then they go off the rails and start making shit up, but since they've already hooked their base, the base just goes along with it and doesn't question it.

Fucking hell, I just listened to what some of my family members had to say about the election and Trump, and again, the core appeal of Trumpism is

1. He didn't do things the way they're normally done. He wasn't acting like a politician.

And because of that, the following is easily believed...

2. DC is corrupt, top to bottom.  Career politicians cannot be trusted. Trump isn't a career politician.  So he can be trusted.  At least more than anyone else in DC.

3. His policies were making America better.

3a. He wasn't sending exorbitant amounts of money overseas like BIDEN just did in the last "stimulus package."
3b. He was focusing on Americans first.

4. The Democrats 80+ years of socialist policies have made the poor people lazy and un-incentivized to work.  They are too used to government handouts.  This is why Republican policies have their appeal.

5. My family is strictly middle class earners, $50k-80k/year/household, and yet they believe these poor people will get a bunch of free stuff and then they will be out of a job.

I fully believe Fox News has rotted their brain, as none of them are big on social media. And because of that, people like Greene will find strong support, especially because they can't be bothered to actually verify and research what policies actually do.

What I don’t get is if everyone is too lazy to work wouldn’t there be more jobs available for them and they could negotiate much higher wages as the only ones willing to work. The entire logic of that sorta thought makes no sense, it would only make sense if like we couldn’t find enough people to fill jobs but then they complain we need more jobs and what.

You should tell your family that making $50k makes them poor too.

Oh crap, I forgot an important piece of information. So, because Trumpism is about the people and they have been fed lies to support it, the fact that Trump is obtuse, deranged, has questionable behavior, and says uncouth things just doesn't even matter. "Don't judge what he says, judge what he does." And the topic of Biden and Trump being old came up, and a response I was heard was "Trump doesn't act old."

But if they make more then they'll pay even more in taxes, and complain even more about it!

*Actually is the case for many people who are stuck in our means tested programs but the income limits are like $5,000 not $50,000

There are limited times where it does work that way, in a sense, from my experience. For example, if I hit overtime for my pay period (I work hourly), I can get bumped up a tax bracket, so my paycheck will end up being smaller than it would if I didn't hit overtime.

I get that money back on my tax return, but still.

But yeah, the idea that herr derr rich people make less than me because they pay more taxes is galaxy brain level stupid. Like people who say if we raise capital gains taxes, people won't invest anymore.

Maybe I am incorrect but the tax bracket doesnt work that way unless I am misunderstanding you. Only the money you make that exceeds your normal tax bracket is taxed at a higher rate.

For example say a 20% tax bracket is 50,000 , and 25% bracket is more than 50,000 and you make 55,000. You would only be getting 25% on that 5,000, so you'd be making 3750 extra instead of 4,000.

Right, but each individual pay period is judged as if that's what you're making for the whole year. So if I have a pay period where I'm making $21/hour (even if it's just for part of it), plus taxed tips, I get bumped up a tax bracket for that pay period, because that bumps me up a tax bracket. Then I get the money back on my tax returns. But in the short term, my paycheck is smaller if I work 42 hours vs. working 39 hours. In the long run, I still make more money, but more taxes get taken out of my paycheck.

I hope that makes sense. Maybe it's different from state to state. Or even employer to employer.

edit: To clarify, the amount of money taken out of the paycheck doesn't take into account the amount of money I've made for the whole year, just what I've made in that pay period.

Even though you get bumped up for that period, you will still make more at 42 hours vs 39 hours, because only the new amount that enters the new tax bracket is taxed at a higher rate (everything you normally would have made is taxed at the same rate as before). You're correct that you're taxes will be higher that month and that you will get some back at filing time.

That's exactly my point. I still make more, but my paycheck for that pay period is smaller, because that pay period is taken in a vacuum.

The issue is when you get the money. The automatic withholdings get done as though you're making that much every paycheck so you wind up having to wait for your refund to get the money.

Right, but you don't make less money for that pay period. If you have a pay period for 39 hours and another for 42 hours, the second will be more pay. There is no possible way for it to be lower.
