I pretty much agree with all that and I said in another thread that the game is kind of my favorite parts of TLoU minus the restrictive format. I know most people love the story in TLoU and I thought it was cool too but I really disliked the structure of 'cutscene, arena, cutscene, arena'. This game kind of very competently manages to take that gameplay but take the chain off and let you loose in its own world with some of its own cool ideas.

Also, the encounter design of the various towns and encampments is much better than any other open world game I've played. There are always pretty natural funnels due to specific landscape design etc. that kind of set up a cool encounter that doesn't just boil down to Witcher 3 design where shit just kind of stands around in aimless groups. They're more like mini-levels sometimes the way I see it.

There's also a tone thing I enjoy about this game. It's a serious story but it doesn't take itself too seriously and isn't up its own ass pretending it's more than it is, I give it quite a bit of credit for that. The design seems to always be in favor of fun gameplay over 'but this doesn't make sense'. It's in small details but I've noticed that. There's also always a ton of fun shit around to play with like the explosive barrels, those big gas tanks with the red cap and so on.

And I definitely thought it looked fucking lame for the reasons you already said when I saw it pre-release. On paper, it sounds insanely played out but actually playing it randomly, quite frankly out of boredom, it's much more fun than it sounds and I think there's a ton of great stuff in here.

The way the game pulls you abruptly into missions if you accidentally walk into an adjacent area, glitches in silly ways like you said or just bugs out though is definitely a legitimate strike against it but it's not HUGE for me or anything. You can be doing something totally different on foot and if you walk into a mission area accidentally a cutscene will trigger with you riding down the road on your bike...that's pretty bad but I mean I just laugh at shit like that. Interestingly enough, the game has a lot in common with The Evil Within 2 in my opinion and I enjoy this way more.

I think TLOU2 is a better game overall and does everything in a stellar way, BUT it's not really a knock on Days Gone. For me, they're not just two zombie games; they each offer something unique in their own way. I think Days Gone being a bit more hammy and not as self-serious is good for what it's doing, and I think TLOU2 being a very serious game is good for what it's doing, especially considering the riveting story. There were a billion times I went, "Oh God, Oh GOD!" to a story beat because so much felt earned.

I'll second the design of camps; it's more than just bushes, and while I had plenty of fun clearing Witcher 3 camps or Horizon camps and think both games excel in other areas, Days Gone does do a good job giving you good level design for each camp and some REALLY great level design for horde migration areas.

And a big lol at the last criticism because my gf actually enjoys watching me take on hordes even though when they race at me, it freaks her out. And I was trying to get to one but accidentally rolled my bike over a spot where I was supposed to meet someone. I watched as the time of day changed, then had to exit out of the mission, but now it was daytime so the horde was elsewhere and I didn't know where the cave was.  I apologized and told her I'd let her know when I found it later. Not a dealbreaker, but something simple like that feels weird considering how polished Sony's games tend to be. The game is carried by a sea of great ideas and some addictive gameplay, so the glitches are way easier to overlook.

I think a lot of it has to do with how the quests aren't just things to level up even though they give you experience. Side missions help you gain trust, and that'll help you get better parts for your bike or better weapons, which will help you with missions or clearing out hordes, which will help you gain trust, so everything you do will likely help you in another area past the skill tree.

It is nothing in this conversation. Would you recommend a game that's "OKAY?" You might, you might not, but many won't. RT is all about recommendation. Its average rating, and Metacritic's average, are all about the degree of praise/criticism.

An actual review and the words the person use are the only way you can actually ascertain what said person thought about a game. The idea that you need an aggregate to determine what the numbers mean instead of the person who wrote the review and gave it a number is quite a weird leap of logic.

OpenCritic only factors in to their critic recommendation % when one of the following happens:

Quote

  • A critic specified they would recommend the game to general gamers over other games releasing at a similar time when uploading their review metadata to OpenCritic's content management system (CMS).
  • For numeric reviews written by top critics, publications may elect to set their own threshhold for what is and isn't recommended. For publications that have not made an election, the threshhold is set to the publication's median review score. Reviews at or above this threshhold are considered recommended. Note that this threshhold is dynamic over time.
  • Non-numeric reviews written by top critics that have a clear verdict and verdict system are also included when recommended. For example, Eurogamer (Recommended, Essential), AngryCentaurGaming (Buy), and GameXplain (Liked-a-lot, Loved) have their reviews included in this metric

It's imperfect, as I've said.  But I don't think there's a significant concern here about the numbers being skewed dramatically either way.

I've never said that you need an aggregate to determine what an individual reviewer actually means.  Or even a score.  We're in agreement there.

27 minutes ago, SaysWho? said:

Just about every review follows this. 5 is mediocre. 6 is OK. These conversations would be much easier if people just read reviews instead of jerking off to numbers.

The ironic thing is that you're heaping your own subjective reading onto several of those reviews.  A game that gets some things right and other things wrong could be teetering on the edge of failure for some of them.  It all depends on how they value the positives and negatives.  You're kind of hand waving that away here.  And even a paragraph might not be enough context, really.

Well as a disclaimer I actually meant the first TLoU specifically. I have yet to play TLoU2 but the gameplay looks legit.

That goofy mission thing happened to me in that town, I forgot the name, where you rescue the girl who lives alone in a house and you take her back to the camp on your bike. I was doing the side mission of clearing out nests in that town and it happened to me FUCKING TWICE! I got 'sucked' into a story mission twice trying to clear that town of nests. First one the Ripper dudes showed up and some epic street gun battle ensued and the second time I got sucked into the 'save the girl' mission. Both times I magically appeared on my motorcycle just ripping into town on the main road when I always carefully park the bike somewhere outside of town and sneak in :shameonyou:. Then like 10 minutes later the whole tunnel section glitched out completely, then I tried to take a route that wasn't the GPS route because the tunnel looked fucking suspect...nope.

But like you said, the game is actually really fun so the glitches aren't some serious issues so far.

No, I'm reading the reviews, which you should probably do instead of the number on OpenCritic. Then you can read exactly what they think, how they view the positives and negatives, and go from there. And then you'll see things like "5 - Mediocre" and see how people actually use the range of numbers to quantify their review. Crazy concept, but it works!

Did you get a graphical glitch or missing textures in the tunnel? Because I had some textures that failed to pop in and took some great photos of PS4 Deacon by a PS1 car and tank!

Godfall received a 5/10 on Gamespot, which is 'Mediocre' using their scale. "This is a shallow game bolstered by decent combat that struggles to bear the weight of an entire game. Uninteresting loot mixed with a monotonous and grindy structure is not a good combination, and for as satisfying and fun as it can often be to hack your way through one battle after another, there's not enough here to sustain that enjoyment for more than a few hours."

You call stuff in my posts cherry-picked and hand waving and you don't even read them, so it's a big ask to make me believe you read past the numbers. :shameonyou:

I had to read this again because before realizing it was a tyop, I thought you really meant, "It's NOW how I personally score games," and all I could think of was, "Say it ain't so, skillz." :p

Of course I meant it's NOT how I score games... glad you caught that. And glad you and @Bloodporne are enjoying Days Gone. I was one of the early defenders of that game and coincidentally enough, just started playing it again YESTERDAY, clearing out hordes and finishing up some storylines that I hadn't finished once I completed the main story. @Bloodporne are you playing it on the PS4? Because it runs pretty flawlessly for me on the PS5 since they updated it.

Nope, I'm actually only playing it because it's in that PS+ free library on PS5. It runs and looks great. The missions themselves have been buggy but the graphics and sound design are both really damn good.

Right now whenever I see a horde, I just get the fuck out of Dodge as quickly as possible although the urge to throw a pipe bomb in there is enormous. I've toyed with the idea of suicide-ing in a blaze of pipe bomb glory actually just because I want to see ten of them explode at once.

@SaysWho? so regarding those audiologs, documents etc. criticism I had about Control...

After playing it last night, I decided to look up a particular fight I had just done on YouTube just because I was curious what others' strategies were in terms of weapon combinations and so on. I've been really enjoying the combat a lot so I was curious how wild people get with this shit. What I stumbled across instead, and subsequently googling this as well, is that apparently nobody actually reads any of this stuff and I'm just incredibly OCD about it in gaming. Apparently a huge amount of people find this game's 'puzzles', navigation and lore utterly baffling and really difficult. It's one of those times where I wondered if they're playing the same game as me but yeah...reading the specific areas people find 'total nonsense', it dawned on me that yeah it was a non-issue for me and I didn't even consider these a real puzzle but I had been reading the documents, building signs and chalkboards etc. along with the actual game's pacing obsessively.

Conclusion: nobody actually reads this shit

The big one that apparently infuriated people was that you have to pull the light switch cord three times. There was a comment like 'who the fuck would ever figure this out, game can't be beaten without a guide, nice' with hundreds of likes. It literally says how to use the light switch cord on a whiteboard next to it and its origin and the Motel and its purpose are even explicitly explained in several documents.

This moment in Control where you find

Spoiler

Ahti's "vacation spot"

is incredibly good.

I'm seemingly about to finish the game and I'm legit bummed out there's apparently no NG+ mode. With this much emphasis on turning yourself into this supernatural beast in combat, it's kinda baffling that you can't just keep going. It's not like the encounters really ever change outside of the enemies' levels/HP.

I'm very surprised to see praise for this, because to me it's one of the clear failures of the game. It's an open world and I want to be able to approach it that way, but the so many camps are designed you're forced through a specific path. Maybe there are a couple of entry points, but overall it's incredibly prescriptive in how it wants you to approach certain areas.

It's one of my absolute pet peeves in open world games to run into "return to story mission area" warnings when playing an open world game. Why the hell should I not be able to flank or take the high ground?  I really don't go that far out of my way in these games, but I keep running into those messages during story missions and I hate it.

I tried picking it up again today after taking a break and I'm not sure if I'll come back to it. It's a decent game buried under frustrating design decisions and glitches. To name some that came up during this play session: why is it that I can find and use a gun, but it won't go into my safe? This is a game about scavenging, and thankfully it lets you pick up guns, but if I find one I like on an enemy that I haven't purchased, I loose it as soon as I swap it for something else.  Also, why in the world do you pay random camps for refilling ammo at a bunker? I don't really care since the amount is tiny and I always seem to have plenty of credits, but I just ransacked some whole camp, find their bunker, and then pay for the privilege of taking their ammo? Or how about the idea that I can fast travel to a camp, go to their mechanic, and be prompted to pay 50 credits to retrieve my bike? I also couldn't save, because despite being in a camp I was too far from my bike or a bed.

I could write pages of annoyances like these, none of them game breaking, many that I'm sure won't even occur to a great many players, but they keep piling up. I do want to get to a point where I could take on a horde, but progression is so slow I'm not sure I'll put in the necessary hours.

Days Gone's camps are pretty standard fare, but most aren't too rail guided.  Stealth is easy mode in that game, so you can always do that (and probably should).  But you could go in guns blazing, or try to attract a hoard to clear it for you.  I used a lot of those confuse darts too.  Partly for the fun of it.

It's the don't-be-seen missions that felt too directed, IMO.  Some of the story missions too, but I wasn't too bothered by the 'leaving the area' stuff on the whole.

And I beat Control and am doing the last DLC.

This setting and atmosphere could go on for I don't even know how long and I'd still want to know more. It's so much better than the sum of its parts that despite some of its issues, this was a 9/10 for me. I absolutely love isolated, eerie locations and Talos I in Prey and The Old House in Control now are up there with some of my favorites.

The constant knocking out the generators and rehealing. Just a cheap ass mechanic.

Spoiler

I actually rage-quit and just closed out of the game after failing twice. Third time around I realized you have to interrupt him when he says "Lights out" or whatever his little catch phrase is. It gives you a few seconds to go stun him. As soon as I did it once, he didn't even have a chance to knock out the light a single time.

First and second time I attempted him though, I wanted to punch the screen. Either way, he's frustrating because it's hard to even tell he has that interruptible window because combat is much more focused on chaos and speed so I rarely really pay attention to enemy animations and so on. Then once you figure that out, he basically just stands there and you can destroy him without much of a strategy even.

Definitely one of my issues, the boss fights are all over the place. However I will commend the game for having really old school health-bar and arena type boss fights to begin with which somehow I found pleasantly surprising. I really liked the second Tommasi fight though.

The game has weird difficulty issues in general, at least to me. Most of the time I would've liked more of a challenge because if you're prone to explore everything like I do, you can be OP way too quickly. It's not balanced well with the main story. Then there'd be random spikes that just made me scratch my head in annoyance.

I think the Metroidvania, or whatever, approach was a really good idea and the level design was great but they really didn't seem to know how to balance and integrate that all that well with the gameplay progress.

Between Days Gone and Control, PS+ is delivering for me right now. Played a few hours of Days Gone during the snow day yesterday and when I needed a break, I decided to download Control. I didn't really like it at first but once it picked up a bit, I started digging the gameplay and whole fun mystery of it all. It's a surprisingly old-school game that reminds me of the 2000's which isn't really a compliment but not a criticism either as it sorta works here?

One thing I will say about it is that the irritating amount of memo, video and other story-related pickups really interrupts the flow of gameplay and atmosphere both. Sadly I'm one of those OCD players who hates a big red icon over my Inventory menu telling me there's new shit there so I can't just not read it. With there really not being any item pickups like ammo or health, it feels like the majority of rooms and areas to explore really contain nothing but more pace-grinding reading material. I'm not sure how else they could've communicated this amount of lore and all but it's overwhelming and the implementation feels archaic and disruptive.

it’s weird but this criticism of Control mirrors my experience reading through this game score argument right now

Well I finally started playing Control and I just got my telekinesis power and I love it. Controls are great, sound is creepy as hell, but I can’t see my 4K options for my copy. I have it downloaded on my PS5(disc) and can’t see where I can enable or disable RTX for gameplay. Do I need to redownload something or am I missing something stupidly obvious

Press start on the game icon on the home screen, then check game version, make sure you're playing the ps5 version.

But its just performance and fidelity modes I think. I always play performance, I didn't even think to check how it looks on Fidelity mode on my C9. Its in the options.

The options tab is a mess of everything from graphics and audio to weird game cheats.

Like he said, there aren't graphics options outside of Motion Blur and Film Grain.

You can choose either 'Performance' mode or 'Graphics'. Graphics mode has RTX and the higher resolution but feels like wading through molasses. I play games with sub-optimal framerates and shit all the time but the Graphics mode (apparently 30 FPS) feels noticeably horrid and not just in comparison with Performance (60 FPS). I started the game in Graphics mode initially and I was surprised how shitty it felt. Going to Performance is like day and night, especially for a game like this. Still looks great and way, way good enough for me in Performance.

My opinion on that actually changed as the game went along and I ended up getting surprisingly wrapped up in the lore. I started looking forward to those Collectible pickups, never really happened to me in another game outside of Souls where I also love to read every item description.

I'm still playing the last DLC right now and I'm at a point where putting together the lore puzzle pieces seems like one of the coolest parts for me.

I'm still playing the last DLC right now and I'm at a point where putting together the lore puzzle pieces seems like one of the coolest parts for me.

Yeah, they did an amazing job with the lore. This game was very interesting. I completed all the side quests just to learn more.

I really, really like Ahti and the Oceanview Motel. I like all of it but those are high points for me. And same for me. I kept going back to the Janitor's Office and the other area in AWE to check for side quests. I played the arcade machine missions last night since I've got some crazy mods going now and it was actually fun.

Ok so I found out why I couldn’t pick between the 2 graphic options on my PS5. When it downloaded the game, it downloaded only the PS4 version of the game and needed to download the PS5 patch/upgrade. So got that figured out now, but I can’t transfer my progress over from the PS4 game I have some 10 hours into (probably a lot less, but I look for the collectables/files) That RTX work when I do my telekinetic powers test was pretty damn stunning with the lighting effect.

Do it again. It will go much quicker. What part were you at?

I didn't even check to see how long I played.

I have just completed the power plant section for the director override to happen. I know I could probably fly back to part quickly if I don’t search for everything again. In like an hour or less I already had my telekinetic powers back
