Official Nuke the Filibuster Thread

Most things are already rigged in the GOP's favor so of course it's in their interest to obstruct change. Since they're so bad at governing, it also always gives them the convenient scape goat of "Well we couldn't get things done because of the damn democrats" (even when that's not true) and no one has any reason to hold their feet to the fire.

Fucking get rid of it and let people be held accountable for their policies, good or bad. We're only going to make progress by actually trying things.

Let the people in government do their fucking job, and stop giving them excuses for why they don't.

I mean, it sounds good now. Nuke it, spend the next two years revolutionizing the US on multiple fronts.

But then you get to watch as the Democrats lose just a couple seats and everything they've accomplished is torn apart, and should there be a GOP President, nothing would stop them from creating the children-caging, impoverished, sick-and-dying privatized fascist theocratic dystopia that they've always dreamed of.

Then that’ll be the will of the people who elected those leaders.

Exactly. Also, I think people are over-estimating the will of Republican leadership to actually do a lot of things they campaign on. Will some bad things be done? Yes. But those bad things also happen in other western nations when conservatives win. The difference? Other western nations do more fucking progressive shit in an average 4 years than the US does in 40. Give the good guys a chance to do good things, and then fight the bad guys when they try to undo it. Most of the time, the bad guys undoing shit is unpopular, and it forces them to find new issues.

Joe Manchin doesn't have shit for power as the 50th Senator with the filibuster. Just with judicial nominees and potential reconciliation.

But he's really just 50+1 in a sea of 60. If the filibuster was eliminated, he would hold *massive* power. He's an idiot for not realizing that.

IMO if Mitch goes full obstruct mode these hold out these dems will be persuaded.

Yep. We're relearning known lessons, which don't get me wrong is annoying and sucks, but his objective here was to break the democratic caucus which he didn't do. These two Dems (manchin and sinema) haven't changed their positions.

But what happens when the great Arizona solar array and the West Virginia money from helicopters (or whatever) riders are on must pass bills that have 50 Dem votes by 0 Republicans?

What happens when it happens for the 25th time?

So much for that...

Next time it's 50-50 with a Republican administration.

"Look, elections have consequences. You can't say the Democrat Party wouldn't be doing the same thing if the roles will reversed. We'll proceed with Republican chairs and a Republican senate leader.

I just hate how opposition to getting rid of the filibuster relies on "what happens when republicans get into power again?"

GOOD. If people voted for republicans, that means you weren't doing your fucking jobs. The will of the people should be heard, even if it sucks.

What does all this mean? Are we still fucked?

Nuking the fillibuster continues to be a pipe dream.

But as others have pointed out, should McConnell or other GOP members continue to obstruct everything Democrats try to do as they have in the past, they may actually jeopardize the rule. If they at least recognize that, we can get some stuff passed. Maybe.
