I don't know how I feel about that trailer. It reminds me of 14 so much. I ended up liking 14 more than expected so not really sure what this is offering better. Unreal engine? Welcome to the 21st century! These graphics just scream first gen PS4.

I really wish they would go the cell shaded route of Guilty Gear or DB Fighterz. The next GG looks absolutely stunning and it would be nuts to see KoF in that style. Even the new Samurai Showdown uses a cool Japanese art 3D style. KoF is just looking dated with these graphics and the models look plastic-y.

I'll keep an open mind since I'm a huge KoF fan but from that... meh.

I agree with most of this. SNK was the longest pixel / 2D artwork style holdout that I can think of. Their switch to 3D models was disappointing to say the least and they're still playing catch up. Even SFV looks better than this. Hopefully the gameplay is something special to make up for the graphical shortcomings. (Where's that saudi money?) - And yeah it would look a lot better in a Guilty Gear style, maybe they should outsource to Arc System Works :p

(Add DNF Duel to that list)

Spoiler

I actually like this style for King of Fighters. It reminds me of their character artwork for the 90s games and that's when the series peaked for me. That or it was from my memories of the arcade and PS1 ports in highschool. The artwork Shinkiro did for KoF 95 and 99 was superb and I'd prefer that in 3D over the stuff coming out of SNK when Nona and then Falcoon took over.

Yeah, see, I want a game that looks like the art Shinkiro did way back in the day.

I love Shinkiro's art. His stuff for Capcom has also been phenomenal since he jumped over there. If we aren't getting old school Neo Geo sprites, I want their game looking like the old promo art, come to life.

Im in. I loved 14. Good fighters are only great if the community plays though.

No reason we can't get this and have our own fight nights... I remember doing a Capcon vs SNK tournament on the IGN boards back in the day. I think a couple of guys who post here participated...

Well if the fighting games get to the point where the netcode isn't complete ass then it is totally possible. :p

Strive is the next big game coming out and it's supposedly going to be easier for beginners, maybe we could all start there.

Im in. I don’t even care which games. We can switch it up if people prefer, or create a leGue in a single game.

Oooo...this make me think a release on Switch is likely! SNK has released most (all?) of their recent fighting games on Switch, so I'm optimistic. But cautiously so, since they haven't announced any platforms yet (for whatever reason).

Until Nintendo improves their online, I will never buy a fighter on Nintendo (aside from Smash).

I'd be into that!

This game looks like ass though.

Also...I barely ever play fighting games anymore so I probably suck shit.

Is it just me or does the hit detection seem really odd in that Meitenkun trailer?

There something off about it, seems like the hit register is behind the hit by a few frames.

It looks better in the second trailer, the meitenkun trailer.

Also if we go by my proposal of all starting with strive (or this) we all suck shit at the beginning and as we all play and discover more we get better.

So far two of my all time favorite characters have trailers (Kyo and Benimaru) and I just can't for the life of me get hyped for this game. Which bums me out. Maybe they just haven't introduced any new mechanics yet, if ever, but for now it's just same moves from decades ago but a little flashier. And dear lord these atrocious out dated graphics with the shiny play dough hair is so disappointing when we have games like GG Strive on the horizon. Even dated games like T7 and SF:V still look better than this. Samurai Showdown even got a unique fresh look. Come on SNK...

I can tell you exactly why SNK has had trouble making KoF feel fresh. KoF is SNK Smash Bros or Capcom vs before either were ever a thing. The whole point of the series was to bring all their fighting and beat'em up franchises under one title. SNK just hasn't really updated any of their other games and isn't keeping itself busy creating new franchises. KoF just sort of became its own thing and kind of lost itself along the way.

The last KoF that actually felt new and fresh was R2 on the Neo Geo Pocket Color, but that was mainly a result of SNK trying to figure out how to make a KoF game the most fun for singles players. That was more than twenty years ago. I think I was still in highschool back then. The last really great KoF entry I can think of is like XIII? That was the last one that used that really nice 3D models turned 2D sprites technique, right? How long ago was that?

I'll be hopeful for this one, but I also very much understand why these games have felt like they're missing something.

I totally agree. The last time KoF felt awesome to play for me was also XIII from back in 2010. It had that great art style but honestly I can't even remember if it did anything innovative from a mechanics perspective. I guess it brings up an interesting question about fighting games these days: Can they just stick to the gameplay formula, change the graphics and expect success? I can't speak for their success as a company but for me, no. I got bored with the last one especially. SF:V is at least doing a pretty good job staying "fresh" with their V mechanics (subjectively) and Tekken 7/Soul Calibur 6... well they're trying too. lol
