I ended up liking 14 more than expected so not really sure what this is offering better. Unreal engine? Welcome to the 21st century! These graphics just scream first gen PS4. I really wish they would go the cell shaded route of Guilty Gear or DB Fighterz. The next GG looks absolutely stunning and it would be nuts to see KoF in that style. Even the new Samurai Showdown uses a cool Japanese art 3D style. KoF is just looking dated with these graphics and the models look plastic-y. Their switch to 3D models was disappointing to say the least and they're still playing catch up. Even SFV looks better than this. Hopefully the gameplay is something special to make up for the graphical shortcomings. It reminds me of their character artwork for the 90s games and that's when the series peaked for me. That or it was from my memories of the arcade and PS1 ports in highschool. His stuff for Capcom has also been phenomenal since he jumped over there. If we aren't getting old school Neo Geo sprites, I want their game looking like the old promo art, come to life. Well if the fighting games get to the point where the netcode isn't complete ass then it is totally possible. Which bums me out. Maybe they just haven't introduced any new mechanics yet, if ever, but for now it's just same moves from decades ago but a little flashier. And dear lord these atrocious out dated graphics with the shiny play dough hair is so disappointing when we have games like GG Strive on the horizon. KoF is SNK Smash Bros or Capcom vs before either were ever a thing. The whole point of the series was to bring all their fighting and beat'em up franchises under one title. SNK just hasn't really updated any of their other games and isn't keeping itself busy creating new franchises. KoF just sort of became its own thing and kind of lost itself along the way. The last KoF that actually felt new and fresh was R2 on the Neo Geo Pocket Color, but that was mainly a result of SNK trying to figure out how to make a KoF game the most fun for singles players. That was more than twenty years ago. I think I was still in highschool back then. The last really great KoF entry I can think of is like XIII? That was the last one that used that really nice 3D models turned 2D sprites technique, right? How long ago was that? It had that great art style but honestly I can't even remember if it did anything innovative from a mechanics perspective. I guess it brings up an interesting question about fighting games these days: Can they just stick to the gameplay formula, change the graphics and expect success? I can't speak for their success as a company but for me, no. I got bored with the last one especially. SF:V is at least doing a pretty good job staying "fresh" with their V mechanics (subjectively) and Tekken 7/Soul Calibur 6... well they're trying too. lol Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
