PC Valve Bringing Online Play to Local Co-op Games on Steam
Keyser_Soze posted a topic in The Spawn Point
There have been programs out there that allow you to do this, but now you can do it natively in steam. So now you can play Overcooked or Spelunky co-op Online with your friends -

Valve is developing a new multiplayer API for developers which you can read about here, but the most interesting part is that Valve will start providing dedicated servers for developers (which they've never done) and that if developers sell their games on the Steam Store, then the cost of those servers will be included as part of Valve's 30% cut of revenue. This means that developers would no longer have to find external server providers which always involves additional cost: Some more info about these dedicated servers: • Relay servers provided by Valve, free of charge for any game released on Steam (opt-in, price is essentially included in the 30% tax). Developers can either proxy to their own game servers or use Valve-provided dedicated ones (only for Valve-approved developers at the moment). • Servers are "hidden" from the outside world, players can no longer know their IPs and connect directly • Free of charge DDoS protection included as well • All connections are routed through Valve's backbone, which provides lower pings and higher speeds and throughput • Platform-independent account identity support (Xbox Live, Steam, PSN, etc.) • Beta only at the moment. Developers should not use this in the production environment until all the functionality is shipped

From PC Gamer: Currently, revenue for Steam games is split 70/30 between the developer and Valve. But from now on, Valve will only take a 25% cut of any earnings over and above $10 million, and only 20% of earnings beyond $50 million. The first $10 million will still be split 70/30, and the change will impact any revenue earned after October 1 this year.

Valve has discontinued its Steam Link hardware, the device which lets you stream PC games onto your TV.

Players in the Netherlands and Belgium “will be restricted from opening containers” following this week’s patch. This will prevent players in those countries from directly engaging with loot boxes, presumably in observance of Dutch and Belgian gambling law. Trading and Marketplace features have been re-enabled in the Netherlands, as well.

A recently discovered hole in Valve's API allowed observers to generate extremely precise and publicly accessible data for the total number of players for thousands of Steam games. While Valve has now closed this inadvertent data leak, Ars can still provide the data it revealed as a historical record of the aggregate popularity of a large portion of the Steam library. Here is a CSV file if you're so inclined.

Valve has restricted trading in two of its games, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2, in an effort to comply with the Netherlands Gaming Authority’s rules governing loot boxes. The move disables the option for Dutch players to trade items in those games.
