Now that the calendar has rolled over to 2019, it's time to post our usual thread where we talk about what games in 2019 we're current playing, have completed, what we thought of 'em, etc. Remember that it's not necessary for the game to actually be released in 2019! I'm going to pick up where I left off in December by completing Metro: Last Light Redux as my first game of 2019.
  3. I think it's best to start with the catalyst for this thread, namely https://www.polygon.com/2019/7/8/20680953/king-kong-xbox-360-game-rayman-michel-ancel and then move into the concept. I remember buying King Kong on the Gamecube, what must have been 6 months before I picked up an Xbox 360 (no correlation, bar the timing) as it was cheap and I'd seemingly played everything else on the Gamecube. Unlike the author of the article, I don't remember a huge amount from the game, bar it being surprisingly scary due to the nature of the combat and the enemies and parts of the game looking fantastic. The article does beg the question though, what movie tie-ins did you either love, or find were much better than they had any right to be? To start off, we will not be talking about Goldeneye or Spiderman 2 in this thread as it has already been thoroughly discussed. As it's my thread however, I will start off with three games that I loved, played a huge amount and will still revisit from time-to-time now, when I want that hit of 'I love this, although I know it hasn't aged well'. Mission Impossible (N64) I remember this being the first game my best friend and I actively followed until release (including the pain of it's significant delay) and when we played it, we both loved it. It had a great (mature) plot, the mechanics were decent and the spy element was implemented pretty fantastically (good gadgets, not forgetting the Face Changer). The above mission 'Embassy' was one that I replayed almost as much as Facility. The World is Not Enough (N64) So underrated as it wasn't developed by Rare, but this took all the mechanics of Goldeneye, added more stealth bits, more story and a great opening sequence to make a very good FPS for it's time. This also laid the foundation for EA's surprisingly good James Bond offerings on the subsequent generation (Agent Under Fire, Nightfire, Everything or Nothing, From Russia With Love). Tomorrow Never Dies (PS1) I know it's basically shit and a rip-off of Syphon Filter. It handles poorly, looks and sound shit, but...it's really fun. Really diverse and it was the first PS1 game that I had bought for me as a Christmas present. There was shooting, driving and skiing all in the one package which was nice and the film, despite not being the strongest, will always be one of my favourites as it was the first I owned on VHS.

  8. It's not been a deliberate thing, but I just realised the VAST majority of my Switch library is made up of indies. Just in 2019 I have bought Wargroove, Downwell, My Time at Portia, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Cadence of Hyrule, Friends of Ringo Ishihawa and Graveyard Keeper. I haven't bought a 'big budget' game since Pokemon Let's Go. Maybe it's my age, and these games often remind me of the stuff I played when I was younger? Maybe it's the convenience of the eshop? The stuff EA, Activision etc. is putting out just doesn't interest me these days it seems. Am I the only one?

Some of my favourite games of all time were from EA (Think 688 Attack Sub, The Bard's Tale Series, Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer, Command & Conquer, Dead Space Series, Desert Strike, James Pond, Mass Effect Series, Mirror's Edge, M.U.L.E., NFS (the good ones), NHL '94, Peggle, Plants vs. Zombies, Populous series, Syndicate, Titanfall 2, Wings of Glory, etc.) I've been playing your great single player games for over 30 years. No all you want to make is GaaS online RPGs, FTP shooters and pay-to-win sports games. You took some of my favourite developers, and turned them into shit factories. This is why I hate you.

  14. Several people (myself included) have been throwing around the terms "AAA" and "Indie" pretty loosely. And I just came to the realization that I may not have the expertise to clearly to be able to easily bucket games. I'm appealing to the experts on D1P to help me! AAA Games I remember hearing this term in the mid-90s for the first time, and it clearly referred to big budget games that had large development budgets, and attracted significant marketing budgets. These are games like CoD, Madden, Battlefront, God of War. (Tangent: I recall, initially, anything not being "AAA" as being a "B" game -- I also remember the term "AA" being thrown around in the early oughts as well to classify smaller games.) Indie Games Indie games are games that are self funded by a developer, and typically developed outside of a major-publishing relationship. Questions I Have 1. Can a game be both AAA and Indie at the same time? (i.e. Cyberpunk 2077 which is a huge budget game, which is not being funded by a publisher) 2. Can a game move from being an Indie game to a AAA game later? (i.e. Minecraft which was developed an released by one person, but is now published by Microsoft) 3. Can a game be neither AAA or Indie? (i.e. A Way Out -- which was published by EA, but had a very low Budget) 4. Can a game have a publisher and still be Indie? (i.e. if it's published by Devolver Digital, it is Indie? How about Koei Tecmo? Atlus?) 5. Can a development studio make both AAA and Indie games? (i.e. Ninja Theory made DMC for publisher Capcom, and then developed and self-published Hellblade with a team of 15-20 people) 6. Should there be a different way of classifying games beyond just these two terms? If so, what are they? I need to be able to classify my games!
