Hey it looks like you can do a lot more than basic attacks in this! Very nice! Looking forward to it.

Trials of Mana, on the other hand... It had a bunch of active ability slots, but hours into the game I had like 2, and they were like weird conditional use things, I think? I just remember the vast majority of the game being this basic ass combo shit. Did that ever change? I really wanted to play more but the repetitive simplistic combat bummed me the hell out, and no one ever talks about that game.

I couldn’t get into it. I loved Secret of Mana during the SNES era, but it was my only entry into the series before the Trials release. I actually close to platinum’d the Secret re-release, but never got more than a few hours into Trials.

Sounds like the crew did everything they could in the circumstances, and the city as well:

    • Notified authorities within minutes of power trouble
    • Port/city got in touch with the construction crew on either end of the bridge, they managed to stop traffic before the ship hit (unfortunately one crew was in the middle of the bridge and did not escape in time)
    • Crew dropped anchors in desperate attempt to slow

The real root causes here are:

    • Infrastructure not meeting modern safety requirements
    • Ships being allowed under their own power rather than by multiple tugs

I mostly agree with all of that, except unfortunately there will never be enough tugs for all the major shipping traffic in some of these river and canal systems.  These placed feed major ports, and there isn’t much money in running tugs, so the government would need to do it.

I believe it was said the nearby port is America’s 18th largest. Instead they’ll just hope it doesn’t happen again.

What I don’t understand is why redundancies weren’t installed or didn’t kick in if it was an electrical problem.  Even large fishing vessels have redundancies for power less they be helpless at sea. I figured these massive vessels would have at least a single automatic redundant electrical system with generators.

It's not new information, but it sure is disheartening to have yet another example of the two-tiered justice system: one for you and me, and one for the ultra rich. If you or I attempted these shenanigans, our assets would be seized so fast, we'd be slapped with a contempt of court charge, etc. But this garbage person gets special treatment..

    huh?

I can get behind prison for Trump, but this isn’t a grift that’s illegal or uncommon. It’s what athletes have been doing for decades. Put your face on everything.

Gold Saucer beautiful. Apparently, I'm closest with Tifa, so I've been hanging out with her.

Can't believe I still have a bunch of other places that I'm assuming I'll tackle, such as

Nibelheim, Gongaga, Rocket Town, I'm assuming Temple of the Ancients, and I've no idea how THAT scene ends from the original.

Also, apparently I and some others were spoiled elsewhere on the internet. Someone posted on a non-spoiler thread thinking they were in a spoiler thread. Understandable mistake, but I didn't need to hear it. I heard

the Tiny Bronco actually travels around the world map like an old-school FF game. That would have been cool to discover since I didn't think something like that would be in a new FF game.

My friend told me if that's all that was spoiled, I'm one of the lucky ones, so hey!

I managed to completely quarantine myself from spoilers of any kind. I only saw the very first Rebirth trailer where they announced the date.

otherwise I went in completely unspoiled, and finished that way.

I also read A Tale of Two Pasts, which is a canon novel by Nojima about Aerith and Tifa’s background. Aerith’s doesn’t break a ton of new ground, mostly expands on what we know. Tifa’s tells a whole new story. We get retelling of her childhood first, then the story of what happened from Nibelheim to the point we meet her at 7th Heaven.

It’s certainly not high brow quality fiction or anything, but it’s a ton of fun, and is about characters most of us love.

Those that own this VR Headset: Do you love it or hate it or somewhere in between? Did you own a VR Unit before this purchase?

I have never even tried VR but have always wanted to give it a try if not outright owning a good set. This set, the PS5 VR set has been the closest I have ever been to buying one. I have very much wanted to Play HalfLife: Alex I'm pretty sure that's a title not available on the PSVR2 set.

So is this VR set recommended of at this point a pass and wait for maybe Meta 4's set? If I do buy one I'm going to want one that ticks most all boxes and doesn't need modules set up in the corners to work. So the least wires would be great. I doubt the PSVR2 is the one for me but am really wanting to know what the overall opinions are from those that own it and maybe have for awhile?

It’s a great headset with crap software, aside from a few gems.

  6. I really want to replay this again soon, but just the main story. I absolutely loved this game. So much so that I have no interest in Dragon’s Dogma right now. There is nothing I want to play except the final game.

    Spoiler

replayed the final chapter, watched it with clear eyes. Sephiroth clearly explains to us like children how new realities are created, and it’s Clear a new reality was created when Cloud tried to save Aerith.

so there are at least 4 realities now, the OG, the current reality, a reality where Aerith lives, and Zacks reality. But as Zacks reality was being destroyed, I THINK he was sucked into new Aerith’s reality, where it’s her and Zack instead of her and cloud? So 3 realities, but maybe even just 2 that are important?

It definitely seems like they are going to bring it back to a single timeline by the end, and wrap up the FF7 main story for good into a single ending.

that’s all me babbling. But I do think Sephiroth converged a bunch of timelines at the end when he separated Cloud and Zack.

I know there were 6 realities (and 6 stamps) hinted at overall, but I don’t think most of them matter.

Every Biggs now seems to be dead?

I didn’t think of trying to save Biggs when it asked me to choose second go around for some reason. Makes me wonder if anything changed in the events? I know it shows you the other side anyway, but im still curious.

So yeah, the further I get from the end, the more I absolutely love the game.

Has anyone here beaten this? I'm curious if it's worthwhile to spend any time grinding materia or levels before the end?

I didn’t need to grind, but I did absolutely everything, so I had multiple materia of almost every kind maxed. Every character hasd a maxed cure, at least lvl 3 hp up, etc.

Enemy skillxHP absorb using Static Discharge is incredible.

I'm on chapter 10. If I play 8 more hours just focusing on the main quest, would I beat it by then? It reads I'm 20 hours in.

Dude, no Idea. It took me 110 hours, I wasn’t paying attention to how long the story took. You’d also be missing out on fantastic side stories. 8 hours of just story won’t get you there though, I think. Every chaper is pretty damn long.

Worth noting that synergy skills don't just not spend ATB, they rapidly build it for both characters. Use them a lot!

Fake out? That wasn't a fake out. We're seeing two different worlds at once. One where Cloud deflected the blow, and one where he didn't. And something fucky is going on with Cloud, because at the end it seems like the same Cloud exists in the same way in two worlds at once, hence why he's able to see and talk to Aerith, and also sees the rift in the sky, but is in the same world as his friends who do not have the rift. We know the rift exists only in worlds that have accepted their fates, so it's possible that he might be in both World A and B (i.e. just the two worlds from Remake, not the additional ones we see introduced in Rebirth) where one just had him and Aerith (and possibly Cid/Vincent) since everyone else died, and the other has the full party.

It's super unclear on purpose, but it's interesting to think about. We also see Aerith using the multiple worlds to evade Sephiroth, as well as give him a functioning Holy materia from her world, while Sephiroth also uses these worlds to hunt her down. So you can easily take the end fight as some sort of lifestream Aerith helping Cloud (hence why she disappears as he return) but it could also be he's simply returning to his world and her to hers.

I'm hoping the finale ends with a tidal wave of Aeriths clashing with a tidal wave of Sephiroths.

Anyway, one reason I specifically think we're dealing with World A and B and not the other worlds, is because the one where he deflects the blow (and she lives) is him overcoming Sephiroth's pull all on his own. We don't actually see the perspective of the world where his friends are with him. In the original game, he overcame Sephiroth's pull and didn't kill Aerith because his friends yelled out to him, meanwhile the scene we see is dead silent aside from these two.

I feel like at some point we've got events happening mostly as they did originally (World A) despite them "overcoming fate" previously, meanwhile in World B, where the world has accepted its fate, Cloud changed it on his own. As is made weirdly clear for not being explained at all, Zack's flashbacks clearly establish that these choices outside of fate's established plan all spawn new worldlines, as we can see from the many Stamps for both Aerith/Cloud's date and the outcome of all 3 of Zack's disparate choices. It seems that at some point during the events in the city of the ancients (I assume after the Sephiroth fight and potential water burial) the Clouds in each world merge, and no one's any the wiser since Cloud's been acting like a fucking weirdo the entire game.

Also fun to see all the details they originally wanted to include, like all the party members except Cloud starting the Sephiroth fight with limit breaks since they're in heightened emotional states.

The most interesting part to me is that Aerith calls the black materia a fake, and I believe her. There's something real weird about it, but also the temple also shrinks into a small mass just like in the original and falls into the crater, making an enormous thud as it lands. I assume that's the true black materia, but since no one magically has that information like in the original game (maybe Aerith? Also probably why she returned the black materia to Cloud) then they all really think the one just sitting in there was the true black materia. The fact that no one mentions the shrinking temple or what happened to it as it fell into the crater is a huge giveaway in my opinion.

I’ll have to watch it all again. I don’t necessarily agree with all of your points, but I only saw it once in an admittedly slightly emotional state.

Yeah, there’s additional quests in each area as well. Some of them are fun. Some are killing more Cactaurs for points.

I’ve finished every Queensblood Challenge except the very final one.

    Sea.

So after I finished chapter 12 today, 13 seems like it will be a straight push to the end. I was able to stay completely spoiler free throughout, so that was good.

man, I’m excited for the final game.

  11. I mean, they deserve protection.

this board likes to hate them, but in today’s environment they definitely need them.

people keep talking about their awful decisions, but I don’t see them making many. Killing Roe was awful, but when you listen to constitutional lawyers, it was probably the right decision legally. There was nothing in the constitution that supports the original decision of Roe V Wade. Abortion should have been codified into law in 2009, but you couldn’t even get the DNC to support gay marriage back then.

Otherwise they haven’t really made any bad decisions, just decisions the left doesn’t like.

    Chapter 9 is awesome.

From 9 to where I am now (chapter 11) the story is really starting to hit its stride. The game is so big, with so much to do, so the story feels very spread out if you’re doing everything, but with all the great character moments a lot of the side stuff brings, you’re never short on interesting moments.

like, theres a Chapter 10 world intel quest that focuses on Avalanche that was really fun and sweet.

Cosmo Canyon is really great too. The Bugenhagan scene is incredible this time around.

9 is definitely the longest chapter so far, it covers two huge areas.

I can’t do two games at the same time because I start mixing up the controls. Playing Spider-Man 2 and Tears of the Kingdom at the same time led to me trying to web swing in TOTK and Link falling to his death.

I just can’t focus on two games at once, except maybe a puzzle game on the side, like tetris effect.

I love Helldivers, but I haven’t touched it since rebirth. I’ll get back to it once im done. At least until Dragon’s Dogma 2.
