    Not ALL of them!

Just cable TV, print newspapers and magazines, and a landline telephone.

I was pretty sure you didn’t have a horse and buggy or a dot matrix printer.
I got rid of my landline last year, when both my boys got cell phones.
I technically have “cable TV”, but that’s because it was $25 cheaper a month to get internet and TV, than internet alone.

I started over. The main reason I'm giving this another try is because of all the GOTY awards it won. Plus my favorite review site gave it a 9.5.

The first thing that struck me when booting this up were the beautiful visuals.

It has beautiful visuals, great music and an awesome atmosphere.

The story is deliberately very "surreal".  It's meant to be vague and confusing.

  3. Recap of worlds:

    ROLLBETTER.GG
    1. Republic Arcs are the meta, 3 of the top four were Republic ARCs (and both in the final)
    2. New world champion is Ilias Ikonimidis, the youngest World Champion ever
    3. The new Battle of Endor scenario pack was used extensively in Rebel/Empire lists.  Lots of great pilots.

I really hope AMG does a points update, it is time for an update to the meta.  In particular, Jag/Wolffe/Oddball can't be 12 points anymore.

On a sidenote -- I won my first league game this season (Week 4) -- playing a top UK player (eliminated in the top 8 out of 113 of the most prestigious UK tournament).  Lots of great players on my team (French Champion, Canadian Champion, Spanish Champion), so I am given the least favourable matchup.  It was really emotionally tough last season, because I was playing great players who had an advantageous matchup in terms of faction/scenario.  I got creamed a whole lot.  However, I learned a ton, and am really improving.  Now, to the point that I can actually beat some good players with a little luck.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what to make of it. Reminds me of HAM/VER in Saudi 01, although there was contact in that instance.

On the one hand, these guys are going really fast, if you do something really unexpected then you really increase the chances of a crash and penalties should exist for driver safety.

On the other hand, if you're a wily ol fox and you come up with some novel line or strategy, I'm inclined to call that fair racing. Especially given the nature of these aero dependent cars, dirty air, and DRS. We've seen other drivers let up a bit in order to be behind at DRS detection points, and they get praised to high heaven for their strategy, and rightfully so. What Alonso did was much more dramatic than that, but it's in the same vein. I'm not enough of a racer to know if Alonso's strategy would have worked if he braked more gently, or if it would have worked at all, but I would like to see an F1 where that kind of race craft is allowed and even encouraged, as long as it's safe.

This isn't the first time this kind of thing has happened in F1, and it has gone unpenalized in the past.  I agree with Joylon, in that I think the penalty was heavily influenced by where Russel's car ended up.

Once again, Doctor Doom is mad about something and he's making it everyone's problem.
    Quote

Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play PvP team-based third-person shooter revealed today by NetEase that pits teams of six heroes and villains from the Marvel universe against each other in battles across multiple worlds ranging from Asgard to 2099 Tokyo.

The whole thing is, of course, rooted in a Multiverse beef: A clash between Doctor Doom and his counterpart from the year 2099 has somehow caused a collision of universes in a "timestream entanglement," forcing heroes and villains into unexpected alliances and enmities as they seek to defeat both Dooms before either of them can take control of these newly-created worlds.

Sounds a bit like Secret Wars, maybe, except the battle lines aren't quite so clearly drawn: Good guys and bad guys are all just cats in a bag. It's not the deepest narrative setup ever but it's also not entirely out of line with typical comic book fare—I mean, Secret Wars happened entirely because The Beyonder wanted to watch some fights. At the very least, it's a better justification for the chaotic brouhaha than we ever got from Overwatch.

    • The Punisher

I have to admit, I struggle a bit to see how The Punisher fits into that lineup: He is, after all, just a guy with a gun. On the other hand, he's also the guy who singlehandedly killed the Marvel Universe. Maybe the smart play here would've been to let him handle the Doom situation while everyone else goes out for a nice lunch.

One particularly interesting aspect of Marvel Rivals is "Team-Up Skills," which enables two characters to combine their abilities into unique powers and tactics: Rocket Raccoon can blast away at enemies while riding around on Groot's back, for instance, while Hulk can unleash his Gamma energy to supercharge Iron Man's armor. (I think it's fair to say that superpowers in Marvel Rivals don't hew too precisely to the previously established canon.) It's not clear at this point whether every character will be able to team up with everyone else, or if only certain heroes or villains will be able to get together

Destructible environments will also enable players to "alter [the] environments, reshape the terrain, and craft a strategic advantage on the battlefield," Netease said. "Take cover to dodge attacks or use makeshift weapons to strike down enemies. Players will find countless ways to utilize the environment to claim victory."

The old titles thing doesn't surprise me. Look at the top of Steam's charts or Twitch and you'll see games like League of Legends, Counter Strike, DOTA, GTA, etc. all leading the charts. Yeah, press and conversation is often focused on new games, but it's no shock that the games people spend the most time on are older.

I'd love more context for that top graph though. I couldn't find much searching on Google. If those charts are right, then the top one only represents the 25% of "new game play time," but I can't think of 25 new pay-to-play live service games would make up that number. Given the time period, it would count games released after January 2021. Overwatch 2, Halo Infinite, Dreamlight Valley, and Diablo 4 are the only mildly successful games I can think of that would count. Are they counting Hogwards Legacy and Call of Duty as live service? What about sports titles? Are they counting games that got paid updates like Destiny in that time? Are they counting mobile games?

That graph would mean that new AAA non-live-service games make up only 4% of annual playtime. That would be a surprise, however, if you count every game that has any kind of update or paid content as live service, then the delineation is basically meaningless.

I stole them from Arthur Gies’ Twitter feed. He had many other charts, if that would help you understand their other points.

Any meaningful difference between the PNY 4070 Super I originally linked to and this MSI one? Or is one of PNY or MSI just better than the other company in general? The PNY 12 GB 4070 Super I linked to in the OP went out of stock at Dell before I was able to order.

    @cusideabelincoln @AbsolutSurgen @Spork3245

My perspective is that any minor differences in clock speeds are not noticeable in real life use.  The best GPU is the one you can actually buy.

I don't have any experience with PNY GPUs.  (The MSI 1070 in my old gaming PC from 2016 is still going strong though!)

I would shoot for as low as possible then. $750/mo is great but you should try to preserve as much as the 54k as possible. Definitely speak to a financial advisor, you'll need like 25k to open an account at a reputable firm. (I use Ameriprise.)

Maybe look at a Honda HR-V.

Good financial advice. Not sure about the car advice.

Max 30 cap will be huge for consoles, provided it's a good framerate limiter and doesn't allow frametimes to go wild. The entire reason it's so herky-jerky all the time is that the frametimes are all over the place, which gives a really constant "start-stop-start-stop" feeling to the entire game when in towns, and less so the further away from towns you are.

Weird to say for one of the objectively worse performing games I've played in years, but it actually runs really well when away from towns. Just these beautiful locales, dense, foggy forests with gorgeous lighting, multiple enemies fighting and tons of spell effects and it doesn't miss a beat. But it's like an inverse square law, where the performance cost decreases exponentially when far away from NPCs, and of course increases exponentially as you draw closer.

I really hope they pin down and minimize the issue(s), I assume they're simply keeping track of far more information than is relevant to the player that could probably be simplified. To expand upon my earlier baseless conjecture: performance like this makes me think they're doing shit like cloth physics and animation calculations (like inverse kinematics) when characters not only aren't on-screen, but not even within a radius where that would be even potentially useful, like when you turn the camera to look at a city from a mile away. When in reality they could probably just track "x,y,z position, daily schedule" and whatever other absolute minimum tracking needs to be done. The CPU usage is insane right now.

    uJUNu28.png

As you can see, while the average FPS is fine, the 1% and 0.1% lows are absurdly low. When your FPS is fluctuating between 86 and 30 (and everywhere inbetween) every frame, it's gonna feel bad. But it also goes much, much lower. A 7800X3D is enough CPU horsepower to bend the Series X and PS5 over and rearrange their guts, but still gets roughly the same lows as those versions. (As you can see, despite the wide range of CPUs, the variance is not as wide as you'd expect. And this is at a low resolution on a 4090, so no GPU getting in the way.)

They've got their work cut out for them, and man I hope they do it.

    sick team america GIF

The frame pacing has to be terrible for those 1% lows.  There has to be something fundamentally broken with their code for that to happen.

My dad brought it to my attention. They have great warranties but @AbsolutSurgen says not to buy them?

Extended warranties are huge margin opportunities for both the dealers, and to a slightly smaller extent the insurance companies.

(I may have been invloved in the pricing and profitability analysis of Extended Warranties for a well-known OEM in Canada about 20 years ago.)

Anytime there are huge margins on an insurance product, it's in your long-term interest not to buy them.

Manufacturer warranties are included in the price of your car -- so aren't the same thing.

$54K I just got last week for retirement. I will be getting a job so no the $750 will not be my only income. Plus I have absolutely no expenses as I'm living for free. The $750 can be used for a car payment and insurance.

Your 54k is all you have for retirement?  Are you taking your payout from your pension and spending it on living?

    What's everyone's thought on KIA's?

As someone who worked at a major automaker for 20 years (about half in product development finance).

The specific vehicle from a brand is probably more important than the brand itself.  All brands have vehicles that are much better than their average, and others that are much worse.

If you're willing to get used, the best deals are usually on 2-3 year old vehicles (particularly low mileage ones).  They've depreciated a fair bit, but still haven't seen much wear.  Avoid buying used cars at dealers, as they have huge markups.

Pay attention to the incentives, the MSRP is not always a good gauge of what your price out the door will be.

And for god sakes, don't buy extended warranties, rust protection, etc.

I never played it on ps4 but it was basically unplayable for me yesterday. Then I did a quick search and the consensus is it's basically not playable on deck. Stepee got it looking ok but nothing great.

OK.  What I read was that it had performance hits while compiling shaders (which can be fixed if Valve creates a compiled shader pack).  I saw the recommendation that you need to turn off the dynamic resolution, because it lowers the resolution to unplayable levels when the shaders are compiling.  But, I haven't played it myself to see.
