  1. My wages are still being garnished for student loans. It's not much, it's like $80-100 per check, but it strangely doesn't seem to affect my credit much. At this point I'm like take that money from my cold, dead hands, you ghouls. Ain't getting a copper from this guy.
  2. Yeah, I don't really know what to make of it at this point. Certain parts were annoying and I kind of... Don't get the point I guess? My brain still tells me I enjoyed it overall, though. I'm just not sure why.
  3. I... think I liked it? I kind of feel like that's how I always feel after a Wachowski movie, at least for a while.
  4. The fact that the wealthy are against giving poor people money out of tax revenue is ridiculous, considering money actually does "trickle up." Most of it still winds up back in their pockets eventually, but the economy keeps-a-churnin' in the process.
  5. Finished it. No hyperbole, Hawkeye might be the best MCU thing... ever? At the very least, it's right up there with Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 1 and Winter Soldier.
  6. We can't burn things for like 4 months out of the year where I'm from because of fiery inferno. It would have been nice today, though. It's basically been raining nonstop for the past like 4 days. I bet rain wouldn't do shit to a fire that big. It's supposed to start snowing here on Sunday night. That reminds me, I need to buy some boots today.
  7. I'm watching it tonight/this morning, but I decided to watch the previous episode first because I apparently don't remember that much. A lot of work shifts, alcohol, sleep, lack-thereof, and sundry feels like has happened in the last 7 days.
  8. I don't have a resource, but I can definitely say that I never used to have to look over my shoulder in northwest. I would never have guessed that inner southeast (at least east of like 15th) is probably the safest part of town. Shit, I don't even remember there even being a sketchy part of town in particular. When I was a kid, there were places that you didn't go, like the Southeast industrial area (where Montage is) or Lloyd Park or whatever, but now I live in an area that you kind of have to have money to live, and I've never felt less safe. Granted, I'm a bartender and I'm out a lot in the wee hours of the morning. I'm walking the streets when everything bad happens. So I'm probably a little more hyper-alert than you would normally have to be. I was walking home about two blocks away from the shooting last night.
  9. I mean, you could go to 1824 for that, but that was a *legit* backroom deal, if that's a thing. 1876 wasn't a coup so much as an... "illegitimate" backroom deal? "We'll concede defeat in exchange for ending all capability of enforcing reconstruction laws" It wasn't a coup, it was a tactical manouvre. It was conservatives playing the long game, as they always seem better at doing.
  10. Officially winter now, but there have now been, I believe, 3 shootings within a few blocks of my house in as many months. I know to someone who lives in certain parts of Chicago that must seem like rookie numbers. Our cars regularly get broken into every couple months. Plenty of people i know just leave their cars unlocked so they at least don't have to replace their windows. There was a homeless camp across the street from my house, they usually break the camp up when it gets cold out. They had a big brawl a couple months ago. I got mugged a block from my house the summer before last where I got a knife to my throat. I've had some people be like "but it's dangerous!" When I mention wanting to move to Louisiana or Texas or something. Like, motherfucker, where I've been living has been dangerous. Granted, my part of Portland is basically close to something like Hollywood, if anyone's ever been there. A lot of rich, poor, and homeless bumping shoulders. Most of Portland is not nearly as tumultuous.
  11. I couldn't think of an answer, but this is a good one. It works on both sexes, too.
  12. Watchmen (HBO) - 7/10 It starts off incredibly strong, but I have to admit I was getting pretty damn bored for the last couple episodes. I was all the way on board with it until the stuff started happening and my brain just kind of started to glaze over. I feel like the ending would have had a lot more impact if the previous 90 minutes hadn't been one big exposition dump.
  13. Sweet Tooth (Season 1) - 6/10 Pretty good. There are definitely a few tear jerker moments. It's a lot darker than you would think given the trailer and general tone. Occasionally the music jarring when they just randomly throw in some shitty alt pop commercial music. It doesn't happen too often, though. It's also pretty plodding. I pretty much had it going on in the background for most of it and I don't think I missed anything. I liked it well enough to want to see the second season, though, whenever that comes out.
  14. I'm about halfway through. It's pretty good. I agree it's worth watching if you're just looking for something to watch. It's a bit plodding, though. I recommend doing something else while you watch it, otherwise it can get a bit tedious.
  15. One drink here and there after work. I stopped drinking at home, though, or going out on my days off. We'll see how it goes and if things go off the rails again. The hard reset seemed to have helped a lot. I'm smoking a lot more cigarettes now, though, so... I guess there's always something.
  16. Yeah, it is really horrifying if you think about it from like an existential perspective. I don't believe in any kind of afterlife in general, but if it did exist, would becoming a ghost be a choice? Do some people just choose to "stay behind" as it were, for all eternity, forever suffering in loneliness? Is it NOT a choice? Do some people just become a ghost regardless of what they want or deserve? Like you hear all the ghost stories about "this person was bludgeoned to death for protecting their children against the cookie monster" or whatever and they get rewarded for that by having to spend the rest of eternity in that building, all alone, reliving that moment over and over again? No matter which way you look at it, ghosts are horrifying. Not because they're scary, but the idea that it could happen to me some day. I'd rather run my balls through a salad shooter. IF what we think of as "ghosts" are real (which I don't), I would think it much more likely that they're some sort of phenomenon of something like a window to another dimension/universe/etc, not figments of our past manifesting for all eternity.
  17. Yeah, unless you're only buying fresh/local, you're pretty much boned in terms of supporting evil corporations. I'd say shop at whole foods, but even by doing that you're supporting Amazon.
  18. There isn't anyone I buy gifts for that can't just buy things for themselves. So I get things like gift cards to fancy restaurants or a nice bottle of booze. Things that force them to treat themselves.
  19. Some of the books plot points can get pretty.. eh, rapey and weird? Especially considering anything with Ciri. I have no problem with them deviating. So far, it seems like they're keeping the broad strokes, but how they get there in the end is pretty different. And that's okay. I'm not going to pretend the book series is some masterpiece of fiction that should never be violated. They're not. They get downright fucking stupid at times. Blood of Elves is the best one imo, and they've pretty much done all of it already. Free reign, motherfuckers. Also fans of books will always be upset that things are done differently. Guess what they can do? ... read the books.
