  1. Will be interesting to see how the American military industrial complex handles this, if it even can: wsj.com WWW.WSJ.COM Basically, American drones suck because they are too expensive, unreliable, and aren't durable in the field. Ukraine has had to rely on mass-market homemade (or commercial) drones that can defeat Russian jamming and other countermeasures. The US MIC is amazing at producing the highest-tech stuff...but if war is switching to mass drone attacks, can it produce something that is very cheap, made on a huge scale, and also reliable and durable?
  2. I think it absolutely depends on what the job is and who the people are doing the job. There are some jobs that obviously need to be done in-person, usually due to technical limitations. There are others that can be done remotely without any impact (and in fact, sometimes improvement). Then there's a mash (probably 50% of total) that can be done remotely, but it could have an impact either way depending on the person.
  3. State of emergency for the day makes sense if you think an area will be receiving hundreds of thousands of people and that allows you to legally deploy extra resources...but 14 days doesn't make sense.
  4. Yep! My coworker/friend wanted to go for the eclipse as he's into astronomy, and we turned it into a couples trip for 5 days. While the eclipse was amazing, my wife and I mostly just wanted to go for the food and sights. He originally considered Texas when he was going by himself, but we decided on Montreal in the end as he didn't feel as safe in the US (same-sex married), unfortunately.
  5. Was great in Montreal, had clear skies.
  6. X's AI chatbot Grok made up a fake trending headline about Iran attacking Israel | Mashable MASHABLE.COM The AI-generated false headline was promoted by X in its official trending news section.
  7. Russians have begun using guided glide bombs against Kharkiv daily, now. They are targeting civilian buildings. These bombs are very difficult to intercept. Monsters.
  8. Only two days into the trip so I'm sure I'll have more later, but: I'd definitely recommend staying in Old Montreal. Cobblestone streets and everything is 200+ years old, plus a Metro stop so easy access to the rest of the city. Feels like Europe. So far the best restaurant has actually been Lacutta, which is BBQ. Otherwise, Greenspot was fantastic for poutine and smoked meat sandwiches and other Quebecois food. Greasy spoon type of diner. We haven't really done any night life since we're not into that, we're more into the history and walking around. Lots of fantastic little cafes, patisseries, and boulangeries. I'd move to Old Montreal if I could...but even 1-bedroom, 1-bedroom apartments are over $1 million in a lot of buildings. Yikes! We went to the Biodome, which was good, but crowded. Biggest impression of the city so far is just how safe it is, and feels.
  9. lol. I didn't take my photo gear because I wanted to enjoy the moments! Only photos are from my phone: The hotel we're in is 193 years old, it's pretty neat.
  10. Did anyone post about the guy at the drive-thru who threatened the fast food worker with a gun because the worker gave him a discount (because there was a sale)?
  11. I also forgot how big Montreal is, 4 million people. 4x my entire province in one city. And the subway cars have giant RUBBER WHEELS, it's insane.
  12. lol, none so far. Crazy how beautiful everyone here is, though. And French accents are very nice. It's the most bilingual place I've been, people just switching between French and English all the time. Bonjour-hi is the standard greeting. Just had the mandatory poutine, and smoked meat sandwich (Green spot).
  13. In a year or two he'll be fully right-wing, it's the standard arc. He'll say it's because of the woke reaction to this announcement.
  14. Made it alive. Now to cram as much Montreal as I can into 4 days.
  15. reuters.com WWW.REUTERS.COM Tesla scrapping plans for cheap EV model. Elon is denying it, but they have multiple emails from people inside Tesla saying to stop production, parts, etc.
  16. Currently 34,000 feet in the air somewhere above Saskatchewan or Manitoba, but somehow still getting decent cell reception. Our takeoff was aborted (at full reverse thrust) and we had to go back to the gate. Pilot said that "the auto thrust system was showing irregular readings," but that we didn't need it to fly, so he had to fill out paperwork and we took off again, this time with manual thrust control. I had to frantically look up the model of the plane (because auto thrust failure is what has downed a few 737 Max planes), but it's a 737-800. So...just have to rely on the pilot knowing the right speeds!
  17. Russia is now saying that not only were drones intercepted (despite the explosions), but they managed to get all 30 fighters in the air before the base was hit. lol
  18. When can we expect the "and this may be bad for Biden" article from the NYT?
  19. Videos of successful strikes at at least two airbase, and possibly a third. Five to six explosions all back to back. Seems that Ukraine threw an overwhelming number of drones, appearing to hit air defense first. If they managed to hit a number of strategic bombers at Engels...that could be huge. It's those bombers launching cruise missiles. Ukraine also unveiled its new home-made drone this week, which can travel 1000+ miles with a 300kg warhead. Likely also uses terrain navigation instead of gps so that it can't be jammed. It's actually crazy how poor the Russian air defense is.
  20. Ukraine saying 6 aircraft destroyed, 8 damaged. Very successful. Also strikes on two other bases, including Engels (where strategic bombers are located), but no word yet on hits. Apparently the Ukrainian drones (at least some) had loudspeakers equipped, and were playing a German drinking song on approach (about being drunk for seven days).
  21. Russia sources are claiming to have shot down between 40-60 Ukrainian drones. As stated in the past, they will often claim things were "shot down" when it really means they hit something. They also like to exaggerate, turning 5 drones into 50.
  22. Russian airbase in Kursk that houses 30ish fighter-bombers (outdoors) appears to be under heavy Ukrainian drone attack.
