  1. Russia-Ukraine war live: Zelenskiy signs new mobilisation law in effort to boost Ukraine’s exhausted forces | Ukraine | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Kyiv brings in higher payments for volunteers and new punishments for draft dodgers Ukraine says it 'ran out of missiles' to stop Russian strike destroying power plant
  2. I'm not that worried about the plot, I think that Villeneuve will figure out how to adapt it well. My main concern is actually that Jason Momoa won't have the chops to play Hayt.
  3. So basically, dynamic pricing to begin with is BS. But on top of that, I strongly suspect that Ticketmaster purposefully holds a bunch of tickets back, only releasing a few dozen at a time. This means hundreds or thousands are looking at those few tickets, so they can "dynamically" increase the price. Then they release a few dozen more, repeat, etc. TM execs should be jailed.
  4. I am generally against Israel, in terms of the government and actions of the nation state. I'm not anti-Israeli population, however. I am also generally anti-Iran government, and anti-PLA government, etc. I don't think there's a single good nation state in that region, tbh. Israel gets a few points for being more democratic than its neighbours...but it also basically has imprisoned millions of people. The neighbouring countries have also helped with this. Basically, I think all sides are to blame, and all sides are victims, and it's a cycle that will never end because no one is willing to be the last person to take a punch in any given situation, mainly because of how egotistical humans are.
  5. wsj.com WWW.WSJ.COM It's about time. They hold 80%+ of the ticketing market and clearly scalp their own tickets.
  6. Wife tested positive for COVID this morning, though my test still shows negative (though I assume I have it). She's had a fever for 3 days and a horrible racking cough, along with headaches and body-aches. Glad she caught it after being 5x vaccinated, and not at the beginning of the pandemic. So I guess take me out of the last-man-standing contest!
  7. Tesla lays off 'more than 10%' of its global workforce | Electrek ELECTREK.CO The layoffs were announced in a company-wide email, after rumors they could reach as high as 20% of Tesla's ~140,000 global headcount.
  8. Two dams in Russia have been washed away in the last week, causing big damage (including shutting down oil refineries). Unrelated to the war, but causing them big problems.
  9. On the flight back from Montreal I would guess that 10% of the passengers were wearing masks (including us), and the other 90% had racking coughs and were spewing boogers without covering their faces. Despite the N95s, we clearly both caught something and are very sick. Looks like we may have finally caught COVID, but hard to say without testing. My wife is basically bed-bound, it sucks. On the bright side, were burning through Fallout and it's great!
  10. Footage shows ship being boarded in strait of Hormuz – video | World news | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Video shared with the Associated Press shows attack on vessel between the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman
  11. And I think that makes sense for most people...but it's like how most people didn't need to know how to fix cars after they'd been out for a while, but you'd still want mechanics to know stuff. Search has advanced a long way, but it only works if people use proper file names or meta data. Nothing beats the "I can't find the file. No, I don't know where I saved it. No, I don't remember the name or what was in it. But I need it now."
  12. Weirdly, even kids coming out of comp sci don't understand how file structures work, or common Windows/macOS functions. It's becoming a real problem in IT. On the other hand...great job security for people in IT.
  13. I had Insider and I sponsored someone—it took 8+ years for IGN to cancel the sponsorship. Each year they would charge my card and I would have to dispute it to get it reversed. I would submit ticket after ticket (I didn't even post there anymore) each year. I don't even remember who I sponsored, lol.
  14. Russia wants to turn Kharkiv into uninhabitable “grey zone” – The Economist WWW.PRAVDA.COM.UA British media outlet The Economist, with reference to military sources in Kyiv, assumes that Russia decided to turn the city of Kharkiv into a “grey zone” uninhabitable for civilians.
  15. I remember going to the IGN Boards in 2001 or so after Daily Radar closed down. It's been a great ride so far, let's keep it going until we're all 80!
  16. Oh, and it was confirmed recently that Biden told Zelenskyy to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries because he didn't want the price of oil to rise globally. Fuck the US.
  17. Massive Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine last night, they (successfully) targeted power infrastructure. The US needs to let Ukraine use western weapons against targets in Russia NOW. Russia is using North Korean and Chinese supplies in Ukraine, and unless Ukraine is allowed to target launchers and airbases in Russia with ATACMS and other tools, they will never be able to stop the launch of all these drones and missiles.
  18. Yeah but have you considered that saying your model has 10x the input as competing models could boost your short-term stock dividend by up to 5%?
  19. It's a complete story for Paul, who can basically be assumed to be soon dead at the end, if you so choose to believe. It's open-ended in terms of the fate of the universe and his children, etc, but that's okay if you assume the first and second book are about the effect he's had on the universe a singular, terrifying figure. It's the same how you could have ended the Star Wars series after the original movie and still be satisfied—yes, it leaves the universe unexplored, the primary story (that the movie set out to tell) has been told.
  20. If Herbert had stopped after Dune Messiah, it would have been a good ending. If he had stopped after God Emperor of Dune, that also would have been a good ending. There are multiple places you can end reading the OG 6 books and be satisfied, imo. In terms of cinematic adaptations, I think ending after Messiah is perfect.
  21. Will be interesting to see how the American military industrial complex handles this, if it even can: wsj.com WWW.WSJ.COM Basically, American drones suck because they are too expensive, unreliable, and aren't durable in the field. Ukraine has had to rely on mass-market homemade (or commercial) drones that can defeat Russian jamming and other countermeasures. The US MIC is amazing at producing the highest-tech stuff...but if war is switching to mass drone attacks, can it produce something that is very cheap, made on a huge scale, and also reliable and durable?
