  1. Time Spent: 30 minutes Rating: *** This one is also hard to judge at first play. It's WayForward putting their Contra chops into a Metroidvania. Visually its expectedly goregous, like Zero Mission mixed with Castlevania vibes. But it's also very bog standard Metroid design, without any cool powerups seemingly. You get better weapons, but they use ammo, which you can get from enemy drops. The controls lock you out of left/right movement while you hold the trigger to aim diagonally. Even mid-jump. They either should have given you 360 aim control like the Mercury Steam Metroid games, or let you still run like in Zero Mission and such.
  2. I couldn’t shake the timer with the default set, but had 15 seconds to spare with the offense set, Barrett, and those ranged catapults to deal with the stop magic and stance shifting. But whatever works.
  3. The timing is incredibly tight on the final stage in hard mode. I had to switch from the default unit set to beat the timer. If you’re going to do it, you need to have a plethora of ranged units at the end to avoid stop magic, which is incredibly hard because of what Rock Paper Scissors requires.
  4. Whatever those catapult things are, set those up in the above middle once you've broken through decisively. If you can do it in enough time, it'll help you beat the timer. I figured out that trick towards the end of hard mode, so it's still possible without for most stages.
  5. Time Spent: 20 minutes Rating: **½ Single-screen puzzle platformer with a teleporter gun, where the bullets you fire will warp you upon hitting a wall. The core concept is good, but then they tell you that you can jump midair after hitting a wall, but it never seems to consistently work. Worse, there's off screen locations that you may have to use this mechanic to reach. I can appreciate it being a linear puzzle game instead of yet another Metroidvania, but it's forgettable. Play VVVVVV instead.
  6. I got that one recently in a Fanatical Bundle. I’ll give it a shot too at some point.
  7. Time Spent: 20 minutes Rating: ***½ Another big surprise from EGS this week. This has everything that makes Samurai Gun fun, plus space combat that controls surprisingly well. In space, you can shoot out a wider spread if you conserve for a bit, temporarily activate protective shields, and use a dash boost. After destroying a ship, the pilot is left to float around and needs to be ramned into or shot again, or else their ship will regenerate. Then you can take the battle indoors, where ships (or ship bullets) can't travel. I wish I tried this with some others instead of just myself, but I can absolutely see the potential. It's not Killer Queen Black levels of amazing, and the art is rudimentary, but overall, I'm much more impressed than I expected to be.
  8. I always wanted to try Kingsway. That one looked fun. We’ll see what happens
  9. Also, the Gamestop deal is now gone. Might have been a pricing error.
  10. Nintendo's also running their Mar10 day sale. Pretty disappointing by comparison. 11. @HardAct I've stuck with setting a small budget for very opportunistic deals each year, roughly the amount of a PS+/Games Pass subscription. Things like a good Humble Choice month, or Tales of Arise for $5. It's small enough where I don't feel bad about not getting around to everything I buy, but also I don't feel any pressure to resub to a plan, or lose access to something I coulda/woulda/shoulda played. Then those 1-3 games I really want enough each year to buy new, I will. It's a good balance for me, and I get enough out of the deal hunting without feeling stupid for overspending or not getting to everything. But no disrespect at all for just focusing on the backlog. You can use that to save up for new hardware pretty efficiently too, if it’s part of a gaming budget.
  12. Red XIII is OP in the early game. I beat Titan with him shortly after leaving the mines, well after the rest of my team went down in the fight. Gave him a Cure and Chakra materia. And when you’re running low on ATB, siphon strike and his limit break heal him too.
  13. https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/astro-duel-2-e1261d Thinking of making a habit out of giving impressions of EGS pixel art games. I'll try to get around to this one this week.
  14. My opinions about it are similar to rumble. When a game really implements it well, it enhances the experience a lot and feels like it adds a layer of polish. And in truly exceptional cases, I wouldn’t want to touch Astrobot without it, just like I wouldn’t want to play Starfox 64 or Warioware Twisted without rumble. If you turn off rumble in games, you probably shouldn’t care IMO. But for everyone else, it’ll be a design feature you probably will want to have eventually, as more and more games implement it. In the FF games I’ve played lately, they use it to make opening large doors and QTEs feel more tactile. Results in longer animations, which kind of sucks, but you might as well experience the intended feel of that instead of wondering what’s the deal here.

  16. I’m having way more fun going into it blind. Since Remake makes no pretensions about the liberties Rebirth can take, I’d rather be surprised by it as much as I can. How different Rebirth is than a PS1 game makes it feel an appropriate distance from the source material, more of a new game. I haven’t played RE4make, but that’s an example of a game that might feel tougher to separate out in my head. At least so far, I’m really enjoying the way it’s filled in at least one plot hole in the og too.
