  1. Fuck it, we've signed up to host a refugee family. We only really have a spare bedroom in the basement (though fully furnished and the basement is finished), but after talking last night we decided that we couldn't not do it. If families are willing to travel around the world to have a safe place to live, even temporarily, then we can offer a bedroom and some food/expenses to help them. Who knows if we'll even be selected since we don't speak Ukrainian or Russian (beyond a few basic phrases I know), but we have access to a lot of Ukrainian friends and families as a support network.

  5. Now that everything is ok, I'm ready to share. My parents have been fully vaxxed (Pfizer) since spring but still caught it. My mom had a light case but my dad (in his 70s with numerous health issues) developed pneumonia. He spent a week in the hospital but is now home and recovered! His doctor said if he wasn't vaccinated he most likely would have died. The doc said that there were many other covid cases that were much worse off than my dad. In fact, at first they didn't think they would even have a bed for him and that he would have to transfer to a hospital two hours away. Luckily they had a bed, and thank the good fucking lord for vaccines.

  8. The Ukrainians are claiming that the Russian incursion along Peremohy Avenue into the Kyiv city center has been repulsed. In addition, they are claiming that an attempted Russian airborne landing in the southeastern city of Nikolaev was also repulsed. At this point, if there is any grain of truth to what the Ukrainians are claiming, I'm going to clearly state that Russia is ACTUALLY LOSING this war on both a strategic and tactical level. Quite frankly, EVERYTHING the Russians have done so far seems ill-conceived, poorly-planned, totally half-assed in execution, or some combination thereof. And long may it continue!

  9. Haven't read the article yet (olol) but to be fair, asking people on Monster if they're looking to change jobs is like asking people on Tinder if they're looking to hook up.

  10. The one thing I learned from my personal experience with choosing to terminate a very much wanted pregnancy for medical reasons, it is so much more common than you could imagine. Getting news at your 20 week anatomy scan that the child you very much want to have and have been fighting to have for years, either isn't viable, or is likely to lead a severely difficult life, starts this insane countdown clock in which you have to make a decision before you get to 23 weeks and it becomes much more difficult to get an abortion; even in a "uber liberal" state like California. So you're running around from specialist to specialist, pulling strings and calling in favors to get bumped to the front of the list for specialists and even then you feel like you're making the decision with a gun to your head. And once you do it, I cannot tell you how many people will send you a private message or pull you aside and tell you something like that happened to them. It's purely anecdotal but for those limited times that it happens, people in difficult positions deserve to not be treated like monsters and should be free to make those completely unwanted, absolutely soul-crushing decisions.

  11. Well...it pleases me to report that it appears that Inuk will be with us for sometime longer! The last 24 hours have been a remarkable turnaround in his condition! He's practically back to "normal" (albeit that normal is still that of a large older dog) and he's showing very little of the discomfort and lethargy that he was on Monday and Tuesday. His appetite still isn't quite back 100% but he's been enjoying the seasoned chicken that his mom has prepared for him and that has allowed him to take his medications which is absolutely important for his overall health. It's possible that the reduced appetite is the result of the gastroenteritis diagnosis that he received from the ER I took him to and that's being treated with probiotics. As for the mobility issues and overall discomfort on Monday and Tuesday, his usual vet agrees with my hypothesis that those were probably (if not definitely) the result of the sedative/painkiller that he was administered in the ER in order to get him in a state where he could be X-rayed. Once that medication was out of his system, he was able to stand on his own and move around with the same mobility that he had before the trip to the ER. All-in-all, he's essentially back to the place he was before the trip to the ER on Monday which is to say "not too shabby" for an elderly large dog. As I told Laps of Love when I called to cancel tomorrow's final procedure, "I know that I'll need your services at some point in the future, sooner or later. But that day won't be tomorrow." So, thank you all for your warm wishes and thoughts for Inuk and me during these last couple of days. I genuinely do appreciate it very, very much!

  19. Had the second surgery today, they removed the outside bolts and screws on the leg and put in a bar inside of me below my knee and added a boot covering the ankle area which I haven’t seen but i think i has some outside bolts still and needs a second surgery. But I can technically bend the knee now and like sit. I got my heel on the ground on the side of the bed for 8 minutes afterwards with their help which is good I think. Not having those huge metal rods poking out from my leg is certainly more comfy so now as long as the pain is being reduced enough I can feel brief moments of something resembling comfort which seemed like so impossible on Monday. Still won’t know how permanent the damage is until more surgery and therapy.
