  2. Again there’s video of the dude saying he wished he could shoot people. Then he put himself into a situation where he was attacked and lo, his wish came true. I don’t dispute that he met the legal definition of self defense in this specific case; he was never going to be found guilty of murder. And I also appreciate that “don’t be there” is not especially useful advice nor a legally compelling argument in this situation specifically. But those are the problems as well as the justifications. He was spoiling for a fight. He got a fight. He defended himself in that fight. I’m not going to pretend I know how to amend the law to make it so that he’s culpable for “being in a place” generally, that doesn’t make sense. There are other cases like this too, where in Texas (I think) some dude called 911 because he saw someone break into his neighbor’s property, he was instructed by the 911 operator not to intervene, the guy went over to his neighbor’s house, shot the intruder to death, and got nothing but praise. Yeah, “don’t rob people” is solid advice but it shouldn’t be “because if you do private citizens are entitled to trespass and shoot you to death while suffering no legal consequences.” The problem is guns. Repeal the second amendment, get guns out of the hands of private citizens. It’s that fucking simple.

  3. I personally believe that there will be very little -- if any -- unrest caused by this verdict as it was by and large "expected".

  4. I'm infinitely more livid at the prosecution than the defense or the degenerate of a judge. They blew this case in such an impressively myriad of ways that they should all be disbarred. Hell, I'll go as far as to say that they took a dive.

  7. It's real easy to say "fix the law" when this country's law makers have proven to be inept. One side is completely frozen in place and the other side has no interest in actually governing. Only maintaining power. I hate to be a doomsayer, but this country is broken on a fundamental level and I have no idea what fixes it. One can only hope that this is the natural growing pains of a relatively young nation still figuring shit out. That's the optimistic view... the alternative?

  8. This isn't shocking to me at all... verdicts like this are a throwback to the Jim Crow trials in the South where the law was designed to protect essentially domestic terrorists. This is no different, and Republicans have passed a ton more laws designied to protect guys like Rittenhouse and punish protestors in the last year in multiple states. This country is heading into some... interesting times. And Malcolm is in defense mode in that picture which is pretty much where I LIVE at all times.

  9. I clicked on the All Access button on the BB website last night for shits and giggles and it went through! I have to wait till Black Friday to pick it up from Best Buy (should be fun) but as far as I can tell I'm gonna have a Series X with my name on it sitting on that shelf next friday. So hyped, I wasn't expecting to have one till next summer!

  10. Honestly so long as the dollar remains the world reserve currency we can run the deficits needed to pay for it all. Foreign central banks and domestic savers aren’t going to say ‘no’ to more treasury bonds until something else is used to settle international transactions. Skeptics will cry ‘but inflation!’ but the truth is that inflation will largely be dictated by other factors than the domestic budget deficit. Some of them we have some leeway to control—if we really wanted a weaker dollar there are ways, whether to monetize our own debts or not is up to us, most especially the Fed, if we really wanted a stronger dollar there are ways to achieve that too—but most of those factors are outside of our ability to determine. The net effects of the programs we’re putting in place with all this spending (defense included) should be what’s being discussed when we talk about whether to cut it or not, not the size of the deficit.

  16. Also "fix the law" only seems to apply to laws they agree with but know will never be "fixed". Laws they don't agree with don't need to be fixed because they are declared unconstitutional and thereby invalid anyway.

  18. Not surprising. The police (who uphold the social order) have been getting away with murder for decades so it is inevitable that the vigilantes who ALSO come to uphold the social order will get the same outcome (albeit through a slightly more onerous process). He wasn't protecting property, he was protecting the police and their upholding of the white dominated social order.

  21. I think that removing things is not a bad thing by default (you need to scrap old stuff that doesn't work/isn't important and make room for new gameplay features)...but BF2042 removed a lot of important stuff, and didn't really add much good stuff. Maybe in a year or two it will be okay. But no voice comm at launch? Come on, what the fuck.

  26. We keep setting impossible goals for ourselves by fighting abstract concepts rather than actual nations, which we'd probably win pretty handily, again, assuming we had a reasonable and attainable goal instead of "CHANGE THE IDEOLOGY OF THE NATION" or "FIGHT THE CONCEPT OF TERROR ITSELF" or other cockamamie bullshit. Which is why cutting the defense budget would be good! Spend that money on something tangible instead of a bunch of dumb bullshit campaigns that are destined to fail or a bunch of new jets that suck ass or a new tank that can shit itself then wipe its own ass or whatever all of that defense budget goes to. Also maybe change the "use it or lose it" budgets that a bunch of the government deals with where they feel compelled to spend money even if on nothing so next year's budget doesn't get squashed. What the fuck is that about? Of course they're spending money on a jet with legs that can play the violin, if they don't spend it on something it's gone next year. Go lean for a few years, because limitations breed innovation while limitless budget often does the opposite, and invest in cool infrastructure like cross-country high speed trains and intra-city high speed trains and other ways to make high speed trains.

  32. Those who speak of "fixing the law" are doing so from a remarkable position of privilege as they will more than likely never feel any of the impacts of those broken laws. They have the luxury of advocating for change "within the system" while those adversely affected simply do not have a shred of that luxury.
