  3. Man, I completely disagree with Xbob that the game doesn’t look that great. It’s a pretty phenomenal looking game with everything going on, and not just during combat, all the atmospheric effects and post processing and great lighting. I’m more impressed with Returnal tech wise than I was Resident Evil 8 last night maxed out on pc at 90-120. Sure there’s a handful of pc games that look better all maxed out if you are really high end on pc, but for consoles this is probably the most impressive game right now. It only gets to have that title for like 6 weeks, but still!

  5. Whatever the crux of the issue is, I think it's irritating and beyond old to see a game get hailed with a boatload of 9s and 10s and what not and then be a total mess for a striking amount of players. I mean look at the percentage of players in this thread alone that have run-ending issues, which in this game seems especially bullshit. I'm mainly bitching about it because it already kept me from finally buying Disco Elysium last month, which was also an abject mess and yet reviewed like the second coming of Christ. I know it has nothing to do with it but I can't help but think back on Prey's initial reviews banging it down to 4/10 and worse for being buggy on release and it wasn't nearly as bad as these two for example.

  6. I’m idk 3-4 hours in I think, but so far I’m super enjoying the game itself, but as I said previously, please ignore my impressions for the first week! I will say I feel like I’m actually enjoying this even though I’m not succeeding because I don’t seem to care as much when I die. I’m just exploring and grinding some permanent stuff and enjoying the action. I think something fundamentally different in this than say a Souls game is that the core gameplay is just super fun. Like the act of fighting in Souls games just isn’t that fun, it’s a test of patience and strategy but the action fighting mechanics aren’t really that fun to use. This is based primarily on being fun to play first, the fast arcade shooter like action and some of the most fluid controls in a third person shooter I’ve played. The gameplay is good enough that it could just be a wave shooter if it wanted and people would still like it because of great solid fun mechanics. So you are just playing a game like an arcade shooter only now you are at least making some progress as you die. It’s easier to swallow for me I think. That and they are generous with health pickups, usually at least one per room. This is huge for me because it means I can start losing focus and thinking about work or something and get hit hard but have a chance to be right back at 100% and start fresh in a room or two. Having those second chances frequently makes it a lot less stressful for me, I feel like a run could always be recovered. But seriously can we talk about how good the third person shooting is? Is this just recency bias or is this at least on gamepad the best playing third person shooter yet? Like what controls better on game pad for aiming and moving around like this? Control is great but it’s not that. How did they make aiming on analog (and I only play with a gamepad) actually feel accurate while not feeling like it’s cheating with too much auto correct!

  8. Decided to put in another run last night, had a decent build going, decent weapons, and critically, had a revive or two. Even spent resin on one. Couldn't finish the run, so I put it in rest mode. Woke up this morning to a notification that the game had been updated, so I lost my run. Really hope they add some kind of save in there soon. In the meantime I think I turned off auto installation of updates, so hopefully that will help. Had a very solid run going today. Finally cleared the first boss, but died on the second while it had only a tiny silver of life left. Real bummer. I took some of the advice I was given and have been more liberal with opening malignant stuff, and it's working out rather well. My last run I kept running across items that would fix malfunctions, but even after picking up basically every item, I didn't have any (some were cleared up via various other methods). While I was drowning in ways to fix malfunctions, I couldn't find an extra life or more HP. The more time I've put in the more I've been enjoying it. I don't know what this dev's history of DLC, expansions, or content updates is, but even though I'm no where close to the end, this really feels like a game that could evolve, even if it's just adding more stuff in.

  10. The fact of the matter is that we don't know the long term health effects of Covid or the vaccines, but there is reason to believe even a mild Covid case carries more long term health risks than the vaccines do. I think that is the sort of messaging we desperately need the government, and sadly, conservative celebrity types to aggressively push.

  12. From my understanding, the RNA for SARS-CoV-2 is very simple, and there are only a limited number of mutations that can occur (almost all on the spike protein). So with the virus replicating trillions or quadrillions of times across the planet in the last year, it's very feasible that the same mutation could have occurred and survived in multiple places. The good news is that the core part of the virus seems to not be able to change, much, which allows for long-term t-cell immunity to be stronger.

  15. When my brother was little he loved watching me play. I never understood it. He could be playing his own game. Often he even owned the same game, but it seemed if he could choose between watching me or playing himself, he’d rather watch me. I was nowhere near as entertaining as these streamers. I barely even talked. I don’t mind watching a streamer to get an idea for a game, if I want to see what it’s like. The few I’ve watched were engaged with the chat enough that I could even ask questions. If a person enjoys it, watching streamers regularly is no more a waste of time than watching anything else, or even playing the games yourself. It’s entertainment. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bill was just jealous of some of these streamers.

  17. Saying watching Twitch is just, "watching other people playing videogames," is like saying watching a movie is just watching people roleplay. Yes it's literally true, yes it deliberately pedantic in the interest of ignoring the parts of that activity that people who enjoy it find enjoyable. A talk show host shitting on how other people spend their time is fucking rich, regardless of who is saying it.

  18. I remember when The Illusionist and The Prestige came out; it felt strange that two movies, circa late 19th century/early 20th century, came out at the same time as they did. And while a big crime is central to both movies, they're pretty different in themes and feel. First, I'm the kind of guy who falls for just about any plot twist. At the time, The Prestige's twists got me. Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Memento, Usual Suspects, Seven, Fight Club, Gone Girl, etc. all had some kind of twist that I never saw coming. However, both movies are more than their twists. Prestige tells a great story even if you see the twist coming. I think the issue I have with The Illusionist is I think it tells a good story worth telling, but it seems a bit dry, lacking emotion in the dialogue/characters. I think part of the issue could be explained But still, I feel the other characters don't have too much of a personality to them; it seems sterile sometimes. All that said, I did enjoy the atmosphere of the movie, and the tricks seemed to defy reality to the extent that they were actually pretty creepy, especially during the bigger tricks Eisenheim did after a key point in the movie. There's one thing that's bugged me, and that's this trick earlier in the film: So this trick

  19. From everything that I've read, the PS5 OS is still VERY much in the "beta test" stage of development Regarding exactly what the "pre-start system" is, the speculation I've read is that it's a process by which the OS will load a small number of a game's files if you move the cursor over that game's particular tile. I have no idea if that's true, but that's the speculation over on ResetERA because this is the first time anyone has ever heard of the "pre-start system" on the PS5. If the crashes are largely an OS-related issue, then that would explain why some users experience them and some don't as it all depends on the overall OS operating environment at the time of the crash which means that there are several variables at play. From my perspective, the idea of putting the system into its "suspend" state if you want to stop a run is absolutely ludicrous. A suspend mode really does leave open the risk of compromising data integrity (file corruption) that simply isn't there with an actual save state. The best way this could've been handled would've been to allow a player to have a single manual "soft" save during a run which would allow someone to stop playing without the threat of data corruption. The soft save could be temporary which means that it would be deleted when the player died and was sent back to the beginning of the game.

  22. I generally favor Epic in these disputes because I think them winning is better for customers, but I think the question Sony brought up is a good one. So what if Fortnight is the biggest thing on Playstation? If cross-play isn't good business for Sony, then why should they allow it? All the Epic points were along the lines of incentives to make the deal, none actually articulated why it would be good business for Sony to allow it, and I have a hard time coming up with reasons it would be. Maybe allowing crossplay meant that gamers would spend more time in fortnight, which meant spending more money in game, and perhaps users tend to buy things on their "home" platform. If Playstation is the biggest platform for Fortnight, that could be an overall win for Sony, but that's a pretty big hypothetical since it would have to more than offset what users would buy on other platforms. This is also what I generally think of all of these issues Epic brings up. I'd be very happy if Devs got more money for their games. I'd be delighted if other companies could run App stores on iOS. I think it would be great if all platforms supported cross-play for everything. What I have a much harder time with is why it would be a good business decision for these companies to implement these things or further still, why the government should compel a company to give into these demands.

  23. Yeah, this isn’t just an amazing looking console game it’s just an amazing looking game period. It’s funny people thinking it could have been a ps4 game, maybe at one point in development but the finished product would have been like Cyberpunk on last gen bad. Like it would have to be on the base one too and it’s already using algorithms from an internal 1080p to hit 60 on ps5. What are they going to aim for scale from 540p to 1080p at 30fps and of course remove all rt and a bunch of other stuff and probably have loading screens during the teleports. It would be like a Witcher 3 on switch sort of thing, it’s possible, but nobody wants to play that on a tv.

  24. Damn, my province just announced we've vaccinated 82% of people 60+, and 64% of people 40+ (43% overall for 18+). The uptake has been incredible, here. My province is a big piece of turd, but somehow it's done the vaccination rollout better than anywhere else in Canada.

  26. I agree with your sentiment but not with your assessment of Ghosts of Tsushima. That game is amazing all around despite not being original. It deserves its accolades.

  27. I agree completely. Regardless of Returnal's quality or current issues, games criticism is completely broken. Numerical ratings are absolutely meaningless when they're skewed to the point that a 7/10 means that something is seriously wrong. As a result, most big releases are exceptionally overrated (recently, see Ghost of Tsushima). Eurogamer is really the only site that I can rely on for generally fair criticism, and the writing is usually good enough that you can tell if a "recommended" or "essential" game isn't something that you'd like, or alternatively if a game that didn't earn one of their badges is right up your alley. The vast majority of games likely live in the 5-7/10 range, and that's perfectly okay!

  28. I saw and own both films and I agree they were both good, but The Prestige was the overall better film. I agree with The Illusionist having a good story and the cast to boot as well. Yet, the movie just kept on a slow and steady course of getting from Point A to Point B. Some cool moments, but the story never built up the momentum of said events afterwards. Then you have The Prestige with a competition between 2(3) former friends and wondering who will have the upper hand when all is said and done. The duels from simple dialog, reading from ones notes/diary, magic/science, a phrase behind a phrase to hide/show who they really are. The movie just had layer upon layer of mystery that kept me invested in the movie. Plus the movie just looks gorgeous, especially the lightbulb field.

  29. You're absolutely right -- vaccination plays a huge role. And, I don't think anyone has yet demonstrated seasonality plays a role in Covid waves. However, infectious disease experts admit they don't know why some areas have been hit much harder than others. They cannot explain why Minnesota and Michigan were hit so hard by B.117, while most other states weren't. Vaccination rates don't seem to be the only factor. Michael Olsterholm has a good science based podcast devoted to COVID -- he can ramble a bit, but in last week's episode he discussed some of these issues with some level of depth (interesting part starts at ~9:30 mark).

  34. Israel has nearly thwarted Covid with less than 60% vaccinated. This is really great news for all nations as it means we can beat this thing much more rapidly than some assumed, with Fauci and others suggesting we may need 80% vaccinated to go back to normal. The scientists who made these vaccines should win the Nobel in medicine for next 10 years.

  37. So, the latest hentai I read was about a college kid turning into a male proustite for some money and he fucks some milfs. The first milf just had her son go overseas for school and the MC reminded her of her son. She then recommended the MC to her friend who's husband hadn't fucked her in two years, is also moving overseas for work for 2 years, and was cheating on her. The final milf was a widow who missed her husband dearly until the MC comes around she forgets all about the dead husband and becomes a sexual deviant because of the power of the MC's cock. Each milf had her own chapter and the final 4th chapter was the MC forming a milf harem with these 3 milfs while getting paid to do so. And they lived happily ever after.

  38. Not to mention there definitely are streamers out there who make it a goal and are good at curating a fun community experience between everyone in chat, chat and the hosts, etc, which can be rare, even on twitch. But when that happens it really does feel more like hanging out, and in that sense the appeal of it makes more sense to me.

  39. The performance is pretty great! You definitely get to easily max this out including RT 4k/60 w a 3080, a 3070 could probably bump vrs and do 1800p or something. I went with 1800p, maxed options with vrs on balanced and was getting like 90-120, nice seeing a game run that well with some RT action.

  40. This is really great news as it means we probably only need to get to around 60% to see the numbers completely fall off the face of the earth in the US. That is very doable before ever having to get into the “don’t want it” group.

  41. Both my parents are abusive - when we were younger it was physical, mental, psychological, all of it. As we got older, the physical abuse died down, but me and my two younger brothers continued to receive all the other kinds of abuse. After my parents' latest disastrous life decision 2 years ago, my two younger brothers and I cut them completely out of our lives. Beatings, walking on eggshells all the time, stressed every day as a child. You name it, I experienced it. As the oldest, it was even crazier. What's hilarious is I'm a lawyer/businessperson, my two younger brothers are full on doctors, and my parents still think we suck. I've heard stories of the abuse of other people I know by their parents and it always shocks me that as bad as those stories are, my parents were worse, but with the veneer of money and civility which insulated them from punishment. Both my parents suck, and I'm glad to be rid of them. Their abuse was next level, it was every day growing up, and it's amazing they still don't acknowledge it.
