Should I buy a new car next week or a used one?

If I was buying new, it would be on finance (so essentially renting) as that comes with free repairs etc in the UK. We’ve bought used and, due to UK law have it checked once a year to ensure it’s road legal (and worthy). Never been an issue really.

Just don’t buy something you can’t cover the costs of massive failure.

So essentially leasing which I don't want to do. I just need to know if I should go used or new.

I always go new/lease.  And money isn't a issue? How is this possible for someone out of work for months? Did you win the lottery and aren't telling us?  If money isn't a issue I would go with BMW.   Fuck a Toyota.

Um...I'm getting my retirement this week. Did you forget that? Plus I'll get monthly checks of $787 for life so I can afford something nice.

I don't want electric. Also, even though I have money I'm not spending more than I need too. I'm not a car guy at all and I just want something nice.

Well I don’t know about Toyotas but I’ve driven Hondas since I was 21. They are very reliable and affordable as long as you stay within the Civic/HRV/Fit models.

Yes, Honda was highly recommended as well. I guess I can google my question but I want to read some folks opinion on here too.

Like I said the only problem I’ve ever had with any of my Honda vehicles is once in a while I had to replace the battery.

Ok. Yea after googling the positives of buying new is better interest rate and no hidden malfunctions. I might be leaning toward new.

After pandemic, it made more sense to buy new, especially when you can find those 0% APR deals. I haven’t kept track of used prices to see if they have come down to realistic levels yet. They were ridiculous for years after pandemic.

I did all the research when I bought my used 2019 Mazda CX-5 in 2021.  Consumer Reports rated it really good for reliability and everything. Then in 2023 the transmission died at 40,000 miles. I was so thankful the 5 year bumper to bumper warranty was still in tact because otherwise it would have been a $6-7k fix. Oh and then the dealership had my car from July to January because of part shortages. That’s how long it took for a new transmission to come in. Again, thankful for that warranty because it gave me a free loaner car. Otherwise I would have had to pay for a rental for 6 months.  Consumer Reports has since updated their ratings for my make and model and it ain’t that great now.
I guess all that to say, buying used is risky.

The last 3 cars we bought were from VW. Bought new because always had 0% financing.

When I bought my car back in 2009, financing wasn’t all that dissimilar to now and I bought used. I typically looked for a car less than 10k. Found a used model driven by a sales guy for a year that had a few thousand miles.

Eligible for the $7,500 tax rebate too! Which I believe is discounted at point of sale now.

FWIW, I like the looks of it too, but the charging is pretty bad if you ever plan on road tripping with it. 10-80% in 43 minutes is significantly worse than cars from Hyundai, Kia, etc. that will do that in 18 minutes, and I suspect these numbers will continue to drop on other cars. Not a big deal if you're going to be charging it mostly at home though.

On the topic at hand: Have you considered a Toyota Rav4?

4 Runner!

Oof, please don't get a 4Runner unless you REALLY need one. How much are you budgeting for gas, @best3444? 4Runners get 16 MPG city and 19 highway, which is pretty bad, especially vs. a RAV4's 27 city and 35 highway, which is itself bad vs. a Camry (51 city, 53 highway).

4 runner is too expensive but that gas mileage is comical. A rav4 has always been on my radar if it isn't too expensive. I'm aiming at a $350 monthly payment.

Ok thanks Grandpa for the info but that will be all for now. You can leave.

Used under three years old and under 30k miles is almost certainly going to be a better financial move. If you’re not a car guy and aren’t looking for something specific I wouldn’t buy new. Just newish.

This.

First car I ever bought was used and I spent $11k for the car and the same in repairs. Once I got it paid off, I traded in for $250 (Chrysler Cirrus 2000, 123,000km) Bought new a 2008 Escape because I was covered bumper to bumper for 5 years or 80k/km, and had a battery die within 2 years. Also got rear ended good for a total of, well, my first car. Traded in for $2500 (damage was completely repaired at their fault, but would be on car fax) Anyways I went and got the 2013 Escape redesign. Engine had to be completely replaced because of an oil leak issue into the main engine itself. So it was sent back to Detroit, new engine free, and got rear ended again ($6k damage) Ever since then I’ve switched to leasing, because I get the latest safety tech included and I’m covered again because I don’t drive much, well anymore since I left Pepsi. So long winded story, I say lease new and know that your covered for almost anything that goes wrong with the vehicle. I’m currently in 2022 Ford Bronco Sport (Outer Banks Edition) It’s boxier then my ‘16, and ‘00 Escapes, and more like the ‘08 Escape (which I kinda like)  Also like that the whole backing of my back seats and trunk have a rubber mat attached to them. Very handy when set flat for the dogs, and my newest guy has car sickness a lot.  No idea what the cost is down there, but might be worth looking into the Broncos. I have heated front seats, wireless charging, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Sync 3. Plus I got the driver side windows tinted and are a godsend sometimes

Definitely aim for around the 30,000 mark

MachEs are 0% interest rates right now.

If you want something non-electric that’s nice (assuming non-SUV) take a look at the Genesis G70, a lot of dealers are changing out their fleet vehicles at the moment so you can get a 2023 with like 6000-7000 miles for a lot cheaper than actual new, but because the car hasn’t been titled before you get the benefits of buying new, meaning: full warranty (instead of diminished warranty that many manufacturers do on “warranty transfer”), 3 years of maintenance included (ie: oil changes), valet service, etc.

Otherwise, look at a Toyota or a Honda Accord/Civic.

@best3444how much were you looking to spend (max + ideal amounts)? What features are you looking for (ie: suv vs sedan vs coup, awd vs fwd vs rwd, performance vs fuel economy vs middle-ground of the two, heated seats, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, etc)?

Probably $25K with nothing special. Fwd, suv, fuel economy, no heated seats or anything advanced in that way. I want a radio and that's it lol.
