Very few service members are war fighters, even during the surges most weren’t kicking in doors. America absolutely needs those Americans, but they also need logistical clerks, intel operations, mechanics, food service. My little cousin, 19, is talking about enlisting in the marines and going infantry, I’m telling him to go Air Force and be an avionics tech instead.

Not sure where she's going to end up exactly but my niece is at meps right now for the chair force, but she's got a bright future. She was cadet CSM in ROTC and thinking of one of those brainy jobs like criminal justice, really proud of her.

Hope your cousin does well, if they'll take him for avionics tech he'd almost gotta be stupid not to take it. Sounds like a good kid.

I’d definitely push her to commission as I’d be very scared to have a female loved one in the armed services at the enlisted level.

He’s a young kid, we were all stupid back then. Lol

In other news, anyone been to Japan? I’m currently prepping my fiancés bucket trip I have 10-22 days to play with. But I need to save time to get back to Crete later in 23 as well.

Yeah she's trying to get them to give her a degree. She apparently qualified for top three choices (instead of five or ten) because of how well she did in ROTC.

Forgot to post a week ago, but got my new Prius Prime in. It was supposed to take 12+ months, but only ended up being 4.

It's a plug-in hybrid, but so far I haven't used any gas at all since the electric range is 65km and my daily commute (and only every second day) is about 10km. It's really cool driving electric, it's way more responsive. Also nice to not have to buy gas, and even in a coal-using province like mine, the power cost is far less than gas.

Woke up with a middle ear infection Monday morning, had some severe pain Thursday night, then Friday my ear canal started swelling shut because an outer ear infection that I'm finally getting over tonight (no more pain/discomfort and my hearing in the affected ear seems to be back to normal). I think I may have had a cold or something else viral two weeks ago that made me susceptible to the middle ear infection, but the outer ear infection is pretty baffling because apparently the middle ear infection shouldn't have been able to spread to the outer ear. In fact on Friday morning it seemed like my middle ear infection was completely gone given that the perceived pressure seemed to flip completely from being inside pushing out to outside pushing in.

My car seems to be leaking coolant. I had to get it towed to a dealer, and the earliest they can look at it is next week.

Thank goodness I work from home, or I'd be fucked.

Considering my car had another issue after this, I started looking for a new car.

And this weekend, I found it: a 2020 Honda Insight EX.  It has about 60k miles on it, but I'm really happy with it.

My first Italian gf, aka my Giulia, is more needy than my actual Italian gf. I’m at the shop again! Hopefully just standard pmcs but I’m a bit jaded after the last year of computer faults.

my fiancé is officially plague demon as I got this shit from her.

I’m finally down to like one bad dry coughing fit when I wake up in the morning from the RSV infection that I had a month ago. Be well

My city briefly ran out of ambulances last week, and now the ER wait times are exceeding 12 hours on average. Standing room only at the hospital. It doesn't help that our provincial government is quite clearly trying to starve public healthcare so that they can offer private solutions.

It’s like that all over the nation here, hospitals discovered a way to make more money during the pandemic recovery.

Today my oldest kiddo begins finals week in college for the first time. The start of the semester was a bit rough, we’ve never once given a multiple choice exam to any of our kids (always short answer or essays), so my son was thrown off by the sorts of trickery lame-o teachers in freshmen/sophmore gen-ed classes will use on multiple choice tests.

An example: he was asked about what made a particular king famous, and the answer that seemed correct was something like “he killed a majority of his wives” when in fact he only killed 3 of the 6 wives he had, this not a majority.

Since then he’s gotten the hang of things and is on pace to finish quite well. My wife and I decided to end the rest of his high school stuff and have him full time doing college classes beginning this next semester.

Nothing makes me feel older than my kids growing up. Our oldest will be turning 16 in January and getting his driver’s license and it’s wild to me for him to be an age I can vividly remember.

Woke up after 4 hours of sleep and wasn't falling back asleep, so got up to make breakfast and then crawled back into bed hoping to get a REM cycle. Proceeded to have several dreams in a row where I was struggling to wake up, and proceeded to realize I was still dreaming. Makes me wonder if I actually was kinda-sorta waking up and immediately passing back out.
