Great creative team of Warren Ellis and Mike McKone. DC has ruled the roost with their OG's but Marvel's put out some decent ones as well and this is supposedly kicking off a series of them from different big time creators.
Looks like more writers leaving books before they even get started. Morrison's Action Comics has been average at best and I was really looking forward to Andy Diggle's run on the book with Tony Daniel's art. I haven't heard good things about Daniel's writing so I'm out.
Well, it's been mentioned several times in other threads and all of us wonderful comic collecting people on this board seem to be enjoying one or several creator owned comics and I thought it was about time to have a thread specifically for that.
What are you reading? What's it about? Who writes it and who draws it? Is it good or does it suck? I think this is a good place to give people a lead on books they might never hear about otherwise.
I'll kick it off with a couple of books I just ordered so these aren't books I've read but I'll certainly update with some impressions when they come out it a couple of months.
Jupiter's Legacy by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely (Image Comics) - What can we say here, it's Mark Millar! I don't know how everyone else feels about him but I tend to at least sample everything he puts out there because quite simply he's got some crazy ass ideas. Basically a story about the children of great heroes that have since grown old and aren't around anymore. IMO, this is definitely worth a check out.
Uber by Kieron Gillen and Caanan White (Avatar Press) - Now this one I'm really interested in. Gillen is best know maybe for his creator owned work Phonogram with artist Jamie McKelvie (the pair now doing Young Avengers) and his Marvel work on Thor, Journey into Mystery and Uncanny X-men. This is a cool alternate history tale. Germany is on the brink of defeat near the end of World War II. There have been threats of "wunderwaffen" to be unleashed by the Reich but no one believes them. No last second miracles here. The war is over. No, it's not. The Nazis have the Uber and the Allies don't. Just by the concept alone, I think this is going to be pretty kick ass and is worth at least a checking into. Looking forward to this one.
Well, hopefully this thread will catch on and we'll have lots of activity and have a good spot to discuss the original works of the writers and artists that we love.
