What’s the boards take on Dark Souls?

Just got into the series

Yes I’ve booted it up in the past. Got intimidated and quit. I own DS 1 & 2 for PC

I also own Bloodbourne

It’s time I get invested

bought DS remastered for $20 and DS 3 for $20 on PS4

I am actually familiar with the game as I’ve watched a couple blind runs for fun over the years

Wanted to see what you guys think about the remaster or the games in general

Why did it “scare” me? It’s not a horror game.

But now I’ve started a new game. Made it past the “tutorial” boss with ease. Running around fire link shrine and collecting goods. I’m aware of the cheesy Taurus demon upcoming. But wanting to build my character some before that and ringing the bell at the gargoyles

I find It fair. What about it don’t you find fair? It’s not hard, it’s just a take on balance. We’re all spoiled with the past 20 years of gaming. I admit I am

Dark Souls is kinda fair. There are some bosses that are pretty cheap early on... (Capra Demon) but he's optional. The thing with Dark Souls is that as long as you take your time and have a pretty good idea of what kind of build you want to develop, the game is fair for the most part. Sekiro on the other hand...

This is relates to how I feel about them.

I really enjoyed what I played of Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne. It wasn't like I just threw 2 hours into each game and called it day. I put some good time into the games.

The process of dying and back tracking I feel only becomes more tedious as the game goes on which is where I start to turn off. I'm not incredibly bad at the game, but how much you trace over similar ground just get exhausting and I start to lose interest.

I've been hooked since I paid nearly 100 dollar for a "mainland" Chinese (had English subtitles/menus as an option) copy of Demon's Souls back during the PS3 days! I enjoy the series because its not about the difficulty, its about perseverance equaling progress. I am NOT a git gud gamer, but I enjoy taking the game play from a feeling of being totally outclassed and threatened at every turn to padding through these deadly worlds like they were my hunting grounds. Certainly there are player much better than me that can ace the bosses with finesse, and at much lower levels. But its a testament to the series that players of such differing skill levels can still progress and complete these games.

Dark Souls is quite possibly my favorite game of all time and I credit it with reigniting my interest in video games as a whole. There's no other game I've ever played that so absolutely nailed every aspect I'd want in a game. I just recently replayed it for the fourth time now and I still feel the same.

I also absolutely love Demon's Souls and Bloodborne. I think Dark Souls II and III are both superfluous.

Regarding the difference in releases @maddux4163, I much prefer the original Dark Souls release with Durante fix and Reshaders over the Remastered release. Remastered introduced sound glitches and bugs I've bitched about on here before being a huge sound nerd. It also overhauled the lighting in a negative, bland way that somewhat diminishes the game's atmosphere in my opinion.

Maybe the word you were looking for is more imposing or oppressive rather than scary. My original playthrough of Dark Souls was still the most intense shit I've played. It feels like a real adventure with the lack of fast travel and you really have to commit to these areas to the point it often feels like a major relief and accomplishment to get back 'home' to Firelink Shrine.

Protip: don't ever get greedy and cocky in Souls boss fights. I don't even know how many times I lost after doing great for trying to go buckwild right before the end and getting crushed as a result. Work out a strategy and stick to it until that thing is dead.

The Xbox 360 version of Dark Souls is the only game I’ve ever quit because of performance. How anyone got through Blight Town on the 360 version I will never understand.

That was actually my initial exposure to the game, that version. I still don't know how I didn't even really seem to have cared about that. The performance is comically terrible even Miyazaki himself made some statement back then that he feels bad for badly it runs. Blight Town is still tough as nails but nowhere near as hard when it's actually controllable.

The best feeling this generation was beating a boss in Bloodborne, with the pinnacle being Defiled Watchdog.

I have Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades Edition sitting around that I need to get, but I honestly want to return to Bloodborne first. I just love the fuck out of that game.

I played 2 and liked it, but I don't see myself returning to that anytime soon.

I always lose interest half way through a DS game.  The early part of a dark souls game where you are trying to figure out the combat, enemies, and world is fantastic. Once I settle into a play style and have a general understanding, I lose interest. I need some motivation to continue to play a game to completion.

plus I hate lore heavy games where you need to read to understand the world and story.

Have you played the Chalice Dungeons to completion? There are some fantastic exclusive bosses in there especially later on. I thought they sucked at first, and the first batch kind of do, but once things get crazy challenging later on, I was hooked.

Demon Souls is still my favorite in there series. I enjoy the games quite a bit, but I do honestly wish they weren't so brutal. I know it goes against the spirit of the game, but I wish there were multiple saves and I didn't need to retread territory so often for being killed.  I realize that is a major component of the game, but still I'd love a game that kept the battle system but was much more forgiving. I just don't have the patience or the time to sink into a game like this anymore.

Exactly my experience. I got a plat on Bloodborne and its expansion, so yeah, I played through the Chalice Dungeons. Multiple times, actually! Going through it with friends or just random people was amazing.

When I first did them, I figured out how to make a dungeon late-game, so I was kicking ass, beat the boss in a few hits, and I'm like, "What was that?" But when I played through the game again and went through the dungeons throughout the experience, it was so much more rewarding.

I helped @madmankevin get a plat in the game by helping with the dungeons. Good times. <3

That late version of Amygdala, holy shit was that difficult.

After I finally beat it, I ended up helping people for days afterwards and it was great. I think only two people that summoned me and one other player total actually beat the fight.

Once the dungeons get hard as fuck, somehow I got really hooked and realized it felt like legit 'dungeon crawling' (Edit: I already said that, gotta stop smoking pot). It's still a shame there are so few templates for the design but what is there looks amazing nonetheless despite the repetition.

In my Top 5 games as well obviously.

That late version was actually harder WITH help because inevitably, at least one person would die. But when you fight a boss with multiple people, the boss has more health, so now you're left fighting a tougher boss by yourself. Yeesh, that fucker.

Defiled Watchdog was a masterpiece of gaming, though. One hit and you could be dead, but it wasn't a cheap boss; you just needed to pay as close attention as possible because nothing was impossible to avoid.

The final boss in the dungeon was a lot of fun with three people.

I love the series. I hope the Demons Souls remake rumors are true because I played that game like a bitch and want to go back and play it right. Playing Dark Souls for the first time is still my favorite moment in gaming.  Also would love to go through Bloodborne again, hopefully it gets a PS5 update because that on a SSD and improved FPS would be magic.

I'm not that great at video games and even I can beat all the souls games. Well except the 3 hard DS3 DLC bosses. I haven't beaten Friede, Midir, or Gael Solo. I can beat Nameless King solo, but it usually takes me a few tries. Most every other boss I can cake walk though.

One of my favorite chalice bosses was Beast-Possessed Soul if I remember the name right. The design was amazing and I like those almost-humanoid bosses that you can parry the shit out of. Also that fire dude with the sword and giant droopy hat, amazing boss.

It’s always fun to see which bosses people struggle with compared to which are colloquially considered tough. I absolutely smoked some bosses people consider ‘hard’ (Kalameet, O&S, Manus, Capra), but Bed of Chaos? Amygdala (non-chalice)? Gaping Dragon? They all completely fucked me, even though they are generally considered easier bosses.

This was Blood-starved Beast for me. I somehow beat that thing on my second try and it seemed really obvious to me. I thought it was supposed to be an easier kind of boss. Turns out it's a major menace to most players and somehow it kicked my ass hard on NG+.

I struggled with Manus too, Kalameet isn't so bad if you aren't going for the tail cut. Capra is only difficult because you walk into a mess of shit and need to stabilize quickly or you'll be dead. Once you do, he doesn't have much HP. I used to struggle with Lorian but the last few times have been a breeze. Every now and then Nito ends up being a dick even though he isn't considered hard.

BSB and Amelia stopped being a problem for me once I found out the cleaver plus fire paper melt them like butter

I don’t recall struggling with BSB. I also handled Father G pretty easily, and he’s often cited as tougher (though that may be because BB was the first From game for a lot of people).

Nah man you misread me, I made them my bitches. Manus only took me a few tries, and I’m pretty sure I one-shotted the others.

Nameless King remains my low point...Pretty sure I took in 3 NPCs/summons to finally beat him.

Delayed attacks are always my bane, I'm old and slow now.

Replaying it recently, Capra was an absolute bitch somehow. I don't remember him being such a problem last time but that arena and the dogs stunlocking me wrecked my ass more than I care to admit.
