Attempting the impossible: House Democrats form Medicare for All Caucus

Oh, cool.  So the Democrats are going to tea party themselves right before one of the shittiest Presidents goes up for re-election.

There's nothing super left about the Medicare for All program, so I'm not sure how that's tea partying themselves. Shaking up their base to align with what a majority of the American population wants anyway (something like 60%+ want Medicare for All) is a good thing.

I hope so - it should be. I think you're right.

But I want nice things. Is that so wrong?!

Not only is it not wrong, but this also means the movement is gaining steam. Movements start somewhere and gain steam somewhere and become a reality somewhere.

Precisely.

America wants this. They've been duped to believe they can't have nice things and to accept a miserable status quo and believe it makes America "great". Medicare for All and College for All can actually, legit, logistically be done. I don't think anyone is against educating the young and healing the sick if it can be done for all reasonably. The great trick that we're sold is that it can't be done. It can be.

Things like 2020 Democratic presidential candidates not taking dark money and candidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez winning in the Bronx in NYC shows that the American people are a majority that want good, obvious things.

Where is that image of Hannity's board of Ocasio-Cortez's talking points, and he tried to make them look bad when it was all clearly all good? That was amazing.

If all American children were right now enrolled in private schools, the American public would be convinced by the GOP that "public education is simple unrealistic, and we can't expect taxpayers to foot the bill!"

Public post-secondary education and healthcare is a proven concept in other western democracies.

I don’t oppose it, healthcare is a shit show.  I just don’t think America is going to get onboard single payer and the republicans won’t have any problem selling it as that.

They could, but it doesn't matter anymore, polls are straight up asking if people want single payer.

The bigger problem is getting dems with insurance backers on board, 2018 might be about strengthening the opposition party, 2020 and beyond could be about sending those people home.

Who cares what they have to say. Republicans labelled the individual mandate, an idea promoted by the Heritage Foundation 20 years before the ACA, as socialism.

I hope some of these congress people start pushing for an NHS

I would like to see K-12 improved so that every kid has an equal opportunity along with college for all.

I wonder what our system would be like if we adopted the Wyden model + a couple of other things. Everyone is thrown onto the exchanges, gets individual and family tax credits and vouchers based on income, and then establish national insurance standards and national pools. Costs need to be contained at some point too.

Have they addressed how everyone on medicare has to still buy gap insurance and what they are going to do about that? People realize that medicare doesn't pay for everything right?

Sanders bill closes that gap.

Interesting side note, the disability community is actually pretty annoyed with the Sanders version of Medicare for All since it completely ignores what to do with Long Term Care Services. Medicare for All would eliminate the need for Medicaid which is where every State houses those programs (Medicaid Waivers) and there's a lot of scary uncertainty of what a Medicare Long Term Care System would look like, especially for those in States that offer 24/7 home care and have high earned income limits that let us work (New York and California). Then you've got States like to Florida that barely do anything. That's a scary middle of the road to meet in.

Heh, I work for a long term care insurance company.

And I agree 100% with this article.

Luckily for me, I'm in a tech role so I can transition out of this if necessary (I'm not going to be here long term anyway, maybe another two years before jumping ship, and definitely jumping if a democratic Congress and president are in office)

Why would it be a Democratic Congress and President over Trump that would get you to jump ship?

There is a very nonzero chance that they would attempt/actually implement a national LTC program, that would effectively put me out of a job in this current company.  With Trump, it's a very zero chance this happens.

But regardless, that would be 2020, and it would be well past time to jump for greener pastures.

Do you mean to a different industry, or a different country?

I don't agree with the numbers ($45k for home care), that's about what I get and and it only covers 72/168hrs of my my weekly needs. Most of Medicaid LTC is badly under served. The asset and income issue has lots of ways around it, Medicaid funding and resource allocation is the bigger issue. Best solution in my mind is to simply Federally mandate Medicaid LTC standards that comply with the Olmstead Decision (Disability Integration Act) and remove means testing. The transition to a national LTC system could legit get people killed in the chaos.

Aren't you an engineer? What does an engineer do at a LTC insurance company?

Went to be an analyst. That stem degree buys a decent amount of credibility when your boss has an engineering background.

Mostly a different company/industry. The political aspect is secondary, to be honest, but it's still something to consider.

Where do you lie on the political spectrum, do you think?

If it's just a different company/industry, that makes sense. A different country once Trump is out of office? That seems silly. If there was a time to leave, now'd be the time unless one thinks things will get better haha.

If Trump wins in 2020 that's enough reason to go out of country. :flag_us_inverted:

I'd say pretty damn left if I had to pick a place on the spectrum, but with a healthy respect for markets so I can't get on the DSA or tariff train. Without a doubt Trump's presidency has moved me further left than I thought would happen.

Well then wouldn't a Democratic Congress and President be a step in the right direction for someone like you? :)
