Today is the launch day for Oculus Quest, and although I know quite a few here are cool on the concept, I thought I'd share the high level details for those that are curious. What is it? Oculus Quest is a room scale, no wires, no PC required VR headset. This device runs on the Android OS. Why does this exist? There are many "camps" within VR that are constantly debating what is best for broader VR adoption. The Quest represents the culmination of the "lower the hurdles" camp. Compared to other 6DoF headsets, its the least expensive and does not require additional hardware to operate. Additionally it allows for room scale VR without wall sensors or external cameras and a portable/console like experience that is as simple as turn on and play. Price? There are two versions, the 64Gb unit at 399 and the 128Gb unit at 499. Software library? The Quest has its own library of games that can be purchased directly from the Oculus store built into the OS on the headset or via a web browser or an app on your phone, tablet, etc. All official content is curated through this store.
