I loved Bastion, and I love the look and style of Resistor, but just couldn't keep playing after the second boss. It somehow lost me. Pyre held no appeal. I'm curious about this one, but will wait for opinions.

Transistor is awesome - you should definitely go back and play it. Pyre is actually pretty good, its gameplay just isn't as good as Bastion's or Transistor's.

I would, but I'm honestly so swamped with gaming options that it feels like the tide is perpetually carrying me forward, not back!

I totally understand - backlogs are rough. It's why I play only one game at a time, focus on it, beat it to completion, then move on to the next game. If you want to whittle your backlog down, play your backlog from the shortest game to the longest game - a lot of the games in a person's backlog are only 5 - 15 hour games, so you could bust through a few of those quite fast, I would think. Transistor is short, so it would be beaten amongst your shorter games quickly perhaps.

For instance, you could play Devil May Cry 1, which is only 6 hours long, or Nioh (which I've almost beaten) which currently stands at 70 hours right now for me. So you could beat 11 Devil May Cry-length games in the space of one Nioh-length game. So if you have a backlog, might as well beat 11 games over 1 game, right? Just as a random example.

Soooo, trying to beat dragon Quest XI was not the way to tackle my backlog, yah?

Hades throws you right into the hellfire instead of wasting your time (Polygon)

We don’t know where Hades’ development is going to lead it, but the game is currently off to an excellent start by simply throwing you into the action and letting you learn. You’re going to die a lot, but emerging from that pool of blood is rarely frustrating. That might be because Supergiant is content to let you learn and fail at your own pace, instead of putting you on rails and holding your hand before you attempt to escape the halls of the damned.

Hades is already a killer combat game in early access (PC Gamer)

If Dead Cells is any indication, this roguelike-esque structure benefit greatly from iteration and player feedback. The moving and punching already looks and feels great. I'm going to be spending a lot more time in hell this Christmas.

You deserve a medal. I absolutely love Nioh's gameplay and even I couldn't force myself to finish it.

If it helps any I'm somewhat right there with you. After 35 hours the game became somewhat repetitive - I just love the missions and gameplay so much (and I'm a completionist) that I kept going, but it has gotten long in the tooth by the time I finished the main campaign. The DLC is sometimes very difficult compared to the base game so it's taking me longer than I'd like to finally wrap this thing up. Some of the sub-missions post-endgame content are quite hard, but I'm making headway slowly . . . :p

It's a fantastic game, I stand by that, but way too long (or not diverse/varied enough) so I hope to see either a shorter game or a more diverse/varied environment for Nioh 2. I'd also enjoy one contiguous semi-open world ala Dark Souls/God of War than an overworld with missions, so I hope that changes too and would make the game feel better/shorter as well.

I think it's an awesome game and one of my favorites hands-down on PS4, just what you said, they really fucking stretched and padded the world/levels to a degree that is nearly comical.

Weirdly enough, it strikes me as if they ran out of time after spending a vast amount on possibly the combat system (kudos though!) and that very first level. If you notice, the first level follows a very different pattern and level of intricacy than basically every other area. It's multi-layered and heavily curated in terms of varying encounters, traps etc. and things decline sharply beyond that. It feels like they had this level as an ideal template of sorts and went 'oh shit dude...only three months left!!!', cobbling together some simple two or three level templates and went with that.

That being said, the gameplay itself is so sublime, I was able to gladly overlook it for a good 40 hours which is enough for me to call it a killer game. I'm truly hoping that Nioh 2 mainly addresses the level design, enemy and encounter designs and leaves that rock-solid foundation mostly as is, it doesn't need fixing. I personally love the overworld with levels/missions, it's refreshing with every game having to be this big experience and adventure right now.

Hyped as fuck for Nioh 2.

PS: Sorry to totally derail this topic, I take the blame.

I definitely agree with all of your points - especially about the level design becoming blander as the game went on - you can sense they felt a lot freer with the DLC, where the levels are far more varied. I agree I hope to see the same improvements you mentioned in Nioh 2 - gonna be good!

And yes, also sorry for derailing thread as well, but I'm very late to the Nioh party. I also have played the game entirely solo, so the game might be harder than it should be at times as well for me lol.

Hades is the fiery follow-up to Transistor that 2018 needed (PCGamesN)

Hades has arrived late to the hell pit party that is 2018. That doesn’t seem to matter as it’s burning hot with brilliance. From the moment I saw it I knew I was looking at a strong contender for one of my favourite games of the year. I love how its combat is balanced on a knife edge: it wants you to dance and dodge across its beautiful environments before you deliver a meaty killing blow. But, fittingly, it’s always ready to punish your hubristic advances, too.

Can someone confirm if this game has randomly generated dungeons or not? It seems to, but want confirmation.

From the article above

Quote

The skirmishes in Hades are all pretty Transistor in how they play out, then, and it’s all to the game’s benefit. But the presentation is where the influence really shines. The backgrounds of each of the randomly generated rooms are filled with lost souls and decadent Grecian architecture rather than Transistor’s art-deco, but the combat effects pop with the same splashes of light and colour that made Supergiant’s previous titles such a joy to look at.

Hades has as much fun building you up as it does knocking you back down (Polygon)

It’s not surprising that the developer of Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre would make a well-written game, but it’s nice to see that the combat has as much depth as the characters. In its pre-release state, my dozen-plus hours in Hades have been some of my favorite spent in a game all year. The promise of more to come is tantalizing, and ensures that Hades will remain a big part of my life into 2019

Just gonna necro this thread right here.

I just finished beating what is available of Hades right now and holy shit was it really really fun.  I'm actually bummed that the game isn't complete yet because I want to keep going.  It's well written, decently voice acted, the combat is satisfying and the variety of weapons, buffs, boons and abilities you can get make each run unique.  I ran into a few bugs (early access and all I guess), but it was smooth as silk for the most part.

I wish I had waited for the game to be out of early access, only because now I'm at the "end" of the game and have to wait for content updates to get the next level(s) of the game.

Anyway, super fun.  Can't wait for more.

I usually do the same, unless im playing a long RPG. I can’t put 70+ hours into An rpg without something to break it up. DQXI, P5, AC Odyssey. Love the games, but i need something to break it up so I don’t get fed up.

The exception is something like the Witcher 3, which isn’t turn based obviously, I couldn’t put that down when it released.
