The US DOE believes lab leak most likely cause of Covid-19, apparently based on new intelligence. If it is ever proven, the Chinese government should be forced to pay reparations for the deaths and global financial toll of their failure here.

The Energy Department has concluded with "low confidence" that the pandemic most likely began after an unintentional lab leak in Wuhan, reports say.

I'd like to point out that a "low confidence" assessment in an intelligence report is generally considered within the IC to be only slightly more definitive than "we really have no damned idea whatsover".

It says right in your linked preview that it's a "low confidence" finding. All this reporting saying DOE thinks it's the most likely scenario is absurdly distorting how meaningful this conclusion is.

Naturally. But what was their previous assessment? New information tilted it in a different direction, which is notable. The reason why it is low confidence is also notable: the Chinese government destroyed evidence in the wet market they claim is the origin. They lied about when they discovered Covid-19. They lied about when they knew it could be transmitted human to human.

Outside of a whistleblower, we won’t ever know with any certainty because regardless of the truth, the Chinese government has made it impossible for outside observers to know.

There are a ton of ways to extract cash out of the Chinese government given the makeup of their economy!

The ONLY effect this info would have on society one way or another is to embolden antivaxxers to be even more sure that the entire thing was a "plandemic," unfortunately.

This is all coming from a leaked classified document so seems like good odds the leaker wanted this out there as a political football for Fox and the Congressional GOP to kick around.

But guys, the NYT isn't a conservative paper! They may be leading with a headline that stokes racial and nationalist sentiments, commonly held by conservatives, BUT THEY KEEP PICKING DEMOCRAT CANDIDATES, ya see!

For real though, the mainstream news outlets that have been headlining this and keeping the story around a "lab leak" going are shameful. It's a national embarrassment that they're doing this.

Also, the DoE report apparently closely followed a politically motivated report released by a Republican House subcommittee not too long ago. So along with "low confidence" add "politically motivated" as well.

Whether they know it or not, the news media churning this around are continuing to drive a wedge between the US public and China in service of a Great Power Contest. We just can't quit the Cold War!

A major department of the federal government updating their assessment of the origins of Covid-19 because of new intelligence is unquestionably worthy of reporting on.

Why does it matter when multiple other intel agencies and departments continue to list bio spillover as the most likely cause?

Is the DOE only involved because of the possibility of a WMD (bio weapon)? Because this would otherwise seem to be out of their wheelhouse

I think it's just because organizationally all of the national labs sit under DOE.

Weapons is probably why they have an intelligence arm though.

What you just quoted is why it matters! This isn’t a rando government employee reassessing, it is a major department of the federal government getting new information and updating their assessment.

I have 2 theories on what happened here:

1)  President Biden asked government departments to look into the source of Covid-19,  The Department of Energy was looking into it, because most of the high-security bio labs report into it.  Understanding what happened, may help us respond to future pandemics and/or give us insight on things we need to change with regards to gain-of-function research and/or bio-lab security.  Their assessment was similar to that of the FBI (although with a different rationale).

2)  This is a conspiracy of right-wing antivaxxer Republican chuds to besmirch the good name of the Communist Party of China and prove Trump right.  Who would ever want to know why anything happened?  China is our friend despite the recent revelations that Canadian intelligence found the Chinese government interfering in Canadian elections, and warnings from Australian intelligence that the Chinese are interfering with their educational and political systems.

Should we lie about China because some racist jackass MIGHT do something bad? [Which he might have done anyways, because people who beat up old Asian ladies on the Subway are pieces of shit.]

No, and I am not saying we should hide anything or keep anything secret, just that the only real impact the info has is negative (for the public).

We should definitely give no quarter to idiots making an idiotic argument for political ends with no evidence even if it later turns out that there's some evidence. There is absolutely no reason to ever say "wow the lunatic bigoted vibes-based ravings of people who don't care about any inconvenient truth were actually right this time."

Chinese state media warned Tesla CEO Elon Musk that he could be endangering his relationship with China after Musk shared tweets about a Wuhan laboratory.

Quote

A Chinese state-run newspaper issued a warning to Tesla CEO Elon Musk after he shared reporting on the U.S. Department of Energy’s “low confidence” assessment that the global Covid pandemic originated in a Wuhan laboratory.

CNBC’s Eunice Yoon reported Tuesday morning on the warning from the social media pages of the Global Times, the English-language subsidiary of the CCP-controlled People’s Daily. The Global Times warned Musk that he could be “breaking the pot of China” after the Tesla and Twitter CEO responded to tweets that asserted that the Covid pandemic originated in a Wuhan research laboratory.
