It says right in your linked preview that it's a "low confidence" finding. All this reporting saying DOE thinks it's the most likely scenario is absurdly distorting how meaningful this conclusion is. Naturally. But what was their previous assessment? New information tilted it in a different direction, which is notable. The reason why it is low confidence is also notable: the Chinese government destroyed evidence in the wet market they claim is the origin. They lied about when they discovered Covid-19. They lied about when they knew it could be transmitted human to human. Outside of a whistleblower, we won’t ever know with any certainty because regardless of the truth, the Chinese government has made it impossible for outside observers to know. So along with "low confidence" add "politically motivated" as well. Whether they know it or not, the news media churning this around are continuing to drive a wedge between the US public and China in service of a Great Power Contest. Understanding what happened, may help us respond to future pandemics and/or give us insight on things we need to change with regards to gain-of-function research and/or bio-lab security. Their assessment was similar to that of the FBI (although with a different rationale). 2) This is a conspiracy of right-wing antivaxxer Republican chuds to besmirch the good name of the Communist Party of China and prove Trump right. Who would ever want to know why anything happened?
