Things have really opened up on the map. The game is so much fun to play when you just wanna kick back and play a video game that doesn't take itself seriously.

Absolutely right. Pretty much what I did last night. Didn't even bother to tackle any actual story mission. I just dicked around on the map doing different activities. Can't remember the last time I had fun in an open world game just doing that. FInished the challenges for the sawed off shotgun and SMG.

It’s so refreshing, really having a bunch of fun with it. Played for hours yesterday doing only side missions which I don’t always do in these types of games.

Doing some story missions today and just got a hover bike. :D

The game gets even more fun when you open up more things to do in it, especially criminal ventures. I think that a lot of people trashing the game aren’t giving it enough of a chance, because most negative reviews and videos that I’ve seen their maps look kind of empty as if they haven’t played for very long or opened up a lot to do. Some of them even complained that there aren’t any fast travel spots except for the church proving that they’re ignoring a lot of the game’s side content. The game does take a while before more things open up, I was even thinking that it was lacking in side content in the beginning not realizing that so much more was going to open up later on. I think that a lot of people who are quick to label the game as crap are judging it before seeing more of what it has to offer.

It appears that a lot of us are playing it the same way, because I also played it most of the day yesterday just messing around in the game world doing side activities, side hustles and criminal ventures without doing any story missions.

In these types of open world games I usually focus on the main missions and side missions without doing too much of the optional side activities and such, because I usually find them to be repetitive filler content that don’t really add to the overall experience in a meaningful way and seem to be included just to pad the length of the games. But in this game the side stuff is some of the most fun that you can have in it, and is more meaningful compared to a lot of other similar games as not only is doing some of it required to play story missions but also because you’re always rewarded in some way for doing it. And completing all of the side stuff in a region has you take over the region, and I want to take over the whole city. While I would normally find completing most of the side content in a game like this to be repetitive busywork, not so much in this one because not only is a lot of it just fun to play but also because doing it lends to some of the best unscripted moments that you’re going to experience in the game.

This game is basically a toy, there’s really nothing more deep or meaningful to it other than just having fun when you play it. You simply turn off your brain, and have a good time. You know that each time that you pick up the controller to play it that you’re going to be entertained.

That's all that matters sometimes. You guys are getting me to come back to this now.

I decided to check out Saints Row: The Third on Xbox 360 to see how it was in comparison to the new Saints Row. I haven’t played it in like ten years, so I couldn’t remember it too well. I ended up playing quite a bit of it, and now I have a better understanding as to why the new Saints Row has been kind of receiving a somewhat bad reception from a lot of people because Saints Row: The Third actually looks and plays a little better and is more polished. The quality of it from a technical standpoint is better, it feels like a bigger budget more finished game. And the characters, humor and writing are stronger as well. It has more life and personality to it in general. The new Saints Row feels like a step back in some ways compared to it.

However, I’m still having a great time with the new Saints Row and I think that it’s actually more fun overall compared to Saints Row: The Third and Saints Row IV. It’s a better sandbox game IMO. I have more fun playing in its world than I did in those games. But there’s also no denying that it does look and play a little dated, and that it’s buggy and lacks polish. It just didn’t seem to have the budget and/or time needed to make it a better game overall.

A lot of the complaints about it are somewhat warranted, but are still exaggerated IMO because I think that it’s a good game that’s a lot of fun to play. It’s not a dumpster fire like a lot of people have been claiming that it is. It might not be better than the previous games in some ways, but it is in others.

So I decided to check this out because you mentioned it looked better on 360 than this on ps4 so I wanted to see compared to the pc version how true that would be, and oh my goodness the new SR looks way better. Makes me curious what it’s like on last gen consoles then.

On the original version, I played on switch so it should be about the same as 360, there isn’t really any technical category that isn’t way better on SR (again this is all against the pc, and I assume current gen versions). The models, shadows, texture resolution, lighting, reflections, draw distance, partials, decals, dof,  it’s just been a long time since SR3, a lot has improved in general engine tech. The only thing Id give it is I think there is more density in the cities and the scale seems maybe a little larger (vertically). But I kind of chalk that up to it being a very different types of cities, and I notice more unique assets in SR’s sleepier desert city.

Then the Remastered edition was on sale for $13 on pc so I figured I’d compare that too. And it’s a lot closer, I’m assuming it’s the same engine and carries along with it a lot of those modern improvements, it’s actually a fantastic remaster, didn’t realize it just came out last year. But the models are still a lot better in SR and the lighting is still further improved in SR as well. Especially on pc where you don’t have to compromise between 60fps and RT AO. So yeah it’s still an easy win against the remastered version.

The remaster runs and looks really great on deck though, glad I picked it up for so cheap, will be fun to go to down the line. But, did you mean that “for the time” it looked better when it came out? Because I can’t see that at all, SR is really not a bad looking game pc/current gen, and I can’t imagine it’s that bad on ps4.

I can only go by the Xbox 360 version of Saints Row: The Third compared to the PS4 version of Saints Row, and I personally think that Saints Row: The Third on Xbox 360 looks a little better than Saints Row on PS4 from an art direction and technical standpoint. Perhaps more in terms of art direction since it’s more colorful and pops more, but it did have some nice visual effects as well such as the water on the streets.

As you know I’m not a graphics pro, my most current game console is a base PS4. I have no doubt that Saints Row on current gen consoles and especially on PC looks better than Saints Row: The Third. While Saints Row looks pretty good on PS4, the resolution is a little low especially during the day. Things look more colorful and sharp at night, it definitely pops more at night.

All that I know is that I was a little more impressed with the overall visuals of Saints Row: The Third from the character models (notably the NPCs) to the environments. The game in general just seemed like it had a bigger budget, and more polish. Saints Row is somewhat buggy and janky, and has a bit of an unfinished and unpolished feel to it. I’m still having a great time playing it because it’s a lot of fun, but it could have used a little more development time IMO.

Interesting! It’s just to me, and I know I’m on pc, but it seems like it’s properly a decade or so advanced beyond SR3, so I’m surprised to hear on your end that it’s not even as good looking, even on last gen. I wonder if you’d think the remaster blows both away, since it would be the parts you prefer on 3 combined with some of the advancements from the last ten years.

One thing it made me realize too though is what a great addition dodging with b button is, it really adds a lot to the new one imo.

Im about at the end, I guess I was further than I thought because the counter tracks total progress, not story progress. I’m just not used to doing that much total progress in an open world game I guess!

Seems like it came up fast but I must have put in at least 30 hours, so I can’t knock it for that, it’s just I could keep going, the story missions just keep getting better.

I mean FINALLY (end of game spoilers ahead)

there is a proper casino mission! and it’s the last one, cut it close to give me that

30 hours is definitely worth the price of admission. I will definitely get to this game and I look forward to just having fun in a game in general. Playing TLOU and now Days Gone I'm playing in such depressing and terrifying environments. I'm always tense each move I make so this will be very refreshing when I get to it.

Yeah that was really good, it’s my favorite of the regular style SR, SR4 is still my fav, but it’s so different it’s not really as comparable.

There’s one final post credits mission to build all ventures and I’m missing 3, so I’ll mess around a bit more before i move on to whatever game I main next.

I agree, I pressed the same button when I recently played Saints Row: The Third expecting to dodge roll and my weapon wheel came up instead. What a strange button to map the weapon wheel to, it was really awkward.

I thought that the completion percentage shown was just for the story, I didn’t know that it was for the entire game. I guess that I’m 50% done with the game at this point, I still have a lot more story missions and side stuff scattered all over the map to do. I’ll still be playing this for a while it seems.

I didn’t know that Saints Row IV was your favorite, I actually liked it more than I was expecting to since I thought that it was going to seem like a Saints Row: The Third expansion since that’s what it began as and was reusing the same city. But it ended up feeling like a standalone game separate from Saints Row: The Third despite those things, and I was pleasantly surprised by it.

The following is how I currently rank the Saints Row games based on what I’ve played of the new Saints Row so far:

Saints Row 2

Saints Row (2022)

Saints Row: The Third

Saints Row IV

Saints Row

Saints Row 2 is not only my favorite game in the series, but one of my favorite games of all-time. I’ve played through it multiple times over the years, and I still occasionally go back to it. I just really like its story, characters (especially the boss), city, interiors/levels, missions, radio stations and ending. It’s the complete package when it comes to third person urban open world action games IMO.

After the last few long play sessions that I’ve had with this game, it has officially taken the crown away from Cyberpunk 2077 as the buggiest game that I’ve played. I know that I said before how the bugs weren’t hindering my overall enjoyment of it because at that time they weren’t, but now they are because not only have they been constant but also worse than the ones that I was getting before.

I did my first KAKTS Radio mission where you have to keep killing waves of enemies until their phone signals are jammed to prevent them from calling reinforcements, and during this mission the enemies just kept coming and coming and they started flickering blue which I’ve never seen happen before. I finally defeated them all, and nothing happened. I completed the mission, but it didn’t acknowledge it. I spent I don’t know how long killing endless waves of enemies just to be screwed over, I was not happy to say the least. So it’s doubtful that I will do any more of these missions since I don’t want to spend a ridiculous amount of time killing waves of enemies just to have the mission break on me again.

Another bug that I keep getting is that whenever I select my revolver I pull out two assault rifles instead, but it’s strictly visual because when I shoot it’s my revolver and not the assault rifles. The problem is that I can’t put them away, they’re a visual glitch that stay stuck in my character’s hands unless I restart the game. But even if I restart the game, they reappear again stuck to my character if I select my revolver. I’m going to change my load out and hope that fixes the issue, because I don’t want to play the game with two assault rifles stuck to my character’s hands the entire time.

Volition delayed this game six months to polish it, but if it still has this many bugs and glitches after six months of polishing then I would hate to see how bad the bugs were back in February when the game was originally supposed to come out. Of course I can only speak for the PS4 version, but bugs have been one of the bigger issues that reviewers and YouTubers have been complaining about and they’ve been playing the current gen console and PC versions of the game so I know that the bugs aren’t exclusive to the PS4 version. If none of you have been experiencing the type of bugs that I have then I envy you, because they’re starting to unfortunately ruin the experience for me.

Sorry to hear it's that bad for you but that justn't isn't the experience right now for me on the XSX. There's been several patches since launch and I'm on the Reddit for this game and no one is really complaining about bugs right now. Hopefully the PS4 version gets a patch if its that bad.

There’s only been one patch for it since its day one patch as far as I know of, at least for PS4. I just played it again for a while, and I’m still getting the dual wielding assault rifle bug. It’s not just when I select the revolver, it happens when I switch weapons in general. I don’t know what’s causing it, and I can’t figure out how to stop it from happening.

I also forgot to mention the clothes menu bug that I continuously get as well for some reason. I’ll be in the clothes menu changing my character’s clothes, and then the screen freezes and I have to restart the game. This has been happening somewhat frequently lately, so I don’t change my character’s clothes very much anymore.

I just quit playing the game because I went to start a mayhem mission, and it froze. I’ve had enough bugs for one day, so I’m done playing it for now. Something just seems like it has gotten corrupted in my game, because I’m experiencing more bugs and glitches now than ever before. It’s getting to the point where I kind of want to stop playing it until more of its bugs have been fixed, because they’re starting to become more of an issue now than they were before.

Well before booting up Days Gone I decided to play Saints Row first. It was goofy and fun but it's not going to take me away from the other games I'm playing at the moment.

As you guys are aware of, I'm a graphics whore. Well after playing TLOU 2022 and Days Gone, Saints Row didn't please me. I understand it's a different graphical style but it's like playing a Saturday morning cartoon. I can get over that when I truly focus on it, though.

I definitely need to take aim assist off the next time I play because It's laughably easy to kill the enemies when auto lock is on.

I do like the main characters and open world games in general are my favorite genre. It was pleasant to play a game so light and pretty (art style) compared to the dark and unnerving games of Days Gone and TLOU.  It’s just a silly and fun game that I'll sit down and play soon. It's got personality and charm to it.

I'm thinking I'll focus on just this game once I'm finished with what I have in my backlog.

Yeah, it’s something fun to play when you’re not in the mood for anything too serious. You just jump into its open world playground, and have a good time. Unfortunately, the bugs that I’ve been getting lately have been making it less enjoyable for me.

I usually wait to buy games after they’ve been out a while and are cheaper, so by the time that I buy them a lot of the bugs that they have at launch have been fixed. But I wanted to play this one on day one, and while it was fine for a while the bugs have been becoming more prominent and are kind of a nuisance now.

That’s too bad this is happening now :( It sounds like maybe they haven’t given the same love to the last gen versions post launch yet (maybe addressing current gen consoles first because that’s where they figure the loudest complaints are?), hopefully they clean it up for you soon. It’s definitely gotten much better on pc post patch, though I still had a handful of mission restarts after that due to bugs.

Yeah, I played 50% of the game without too many issues. I had a lot of long play sessions without experiencing any bugs at all. But then recently it’s as if my game got corrupted somehow, and hasn’t been working quite right since. Guns staying stuck in my character’s hands at all times, all of my weapons disappearing from my inventory, enemies flickering solid blue, menu screens freezing, mission starts freezing, missions not being acknowledged as completed, etc. It’s all been a bit much to the point where it seems like something got messed up in my game. The reason I say this is because most of these issues started happening right after completing the Eurekabator Quantum Aperture mission. It seems like that mission corrupted my game somehow. I could be wrong of course, but that’s when things really started to go south.

Man, I'm really sorry to hear this. You were having such a great time during that 50% play session being bug free. I feel bad.

Yea, I'm suspecting that the last generation versions didn't get as much attention compared to the new consoles and PC.

BUT, you're even running into bugs that are pretty substantial if you get bugs that require you to restart missions. Hopefully they are working hard to patch this up on all platforms. Maybe by the time I play it it will be at a much better state.

This is what I'm looking forward to after I beat some of my backlog.

Oh yeah the bugs were still annoying af, I hate replaying stuff. Luckily nothing was over like 5min to get back to where I was though. Playing while watching tv also helped that bother me less. But still, mission failures because of bugs sucks hard, and it does deserve to get knocked for that. Still would give it a 8/10 considering those, at least on pc.

You're a very patient and understanding gamer and look at the positives. You giving it an 8/10 makes me feel good about this. Like I said, by the time I play this game most likely it will be patched up which would be awesome. I'm going to play more tonight and just mess around in the world.

Day's Gone has been very good especially now that I'm opening up the map and being introduced to new characters.

I'm not sure if you played this or not?

Its on my list! I played the opening, like up to where my friend is hurt and I’m out doing some stuff now and some guys are creeping on our location. Sounds like it’s a grower, and games that click with me right away are more likely to get attention than it, so that keeps happening, though I am interested enough that I’ll give it an honest go.

I played Saints Row most of the day today, and had a great time. I didn’t experience too many bugs except for mainly the one where the two assault rifles stay in my character’s hands the entire time. I found out that it’s the D4th Blossom skill that causes it. This is the skill that you receive at level 19 where your character does a spinning jump flip with two assault rifles in their hands mowing down all enemies around them. It’s one of the best skills in the game because it takes out all of the enemies around you when you’re surrounded. The problem is that the two assault rifles that you’re holding when you do the attack sometimes stay in your hands after the attack. They’re only supposed to be in your hands during the attack animation, and then disappear when the attack is over. But sometimes they stay in your hands permanently until you restart the game.

This is the most annoying bug that I’m dealing with right now, because it occurs quite a lot. The only solution to preventing it from happening is to not use the D4th Blossom skill, but it’s the best skill in the game IMO. So whenever the guns stay stuck in my hands, I restart the game. Of course it’s annoying to do this after most gun battles, but it’s something that I have to do if I don’t want my character running around holding two assault rifles in their hands the entire time which I don’t.

I'm still off work so for some reason I wake up at 2am every morning. So I play games during that time. Well, I tried more Saints Row and it's just not going to workout. It feels like I'm playing a PS3 title and the entire "production values" are so very weak. It's just not hooking me in like it is for you guys. This is a perfect game to rent back in the day or gamefly it and play over a weekend.

I won't say anymore negative things about it but I'll never play it again. I'm really happy for you guys that are having a blast with it, though.

I regret having vic buying me this instead of TLOU 1 remake. :/
