The 2023 writers strike is officially on. | deal signed 9/26

I’m sure there are companies like whoever make Final Draft already working on AI text generation functionality for their screenplay writing software. The studios always look for ways to cut what they just view as costs out of the chain.

They tried it with movie theaters during the pandemic, not realizing how theatrical releases are still core to their ability to make money and streaming still doesn’t make economic sense as a business.

But if movie watchers and filmmakers change their views over time to no longer see theatrical release as the pinnacle, AND they figure out how to charge enough for their service, they will tell theaters to take a hike. I just don’t see that happening for quite some time.

I think we are much closer to the point where AI could at least be brought in to perform rewrites and punch ups on scripts to a level studios would be pleased with.

Deadline understands a low-key WGA operation is in place to target specific filming locations across LA in order to shut them down.

How did they do it? Ostensibly, with two people each holding picket signs. Under labor laws, that’s all that’s required for an official picket line, which in turn means that the other unions, from IATSE to the Teamsters can refuse cross the picket line.

Last week, Wonder Man, which stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the titular character, was shooting in Hollywood and the squad managed to disrupt proceedings. Then on Monday, the show, which was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, was filming at CBS’ Radford location, where again they were met by picketers. Given that the series was originally planned to shoot through August, one would imagine it may get hit again.

Similarly, Loot was filming in Beverly Hills and once a picket line was put up, others refused to cross it and star Maya Rudolph, whose writing credits include Maya & Marty and Sarah Cooper: Everything’s Fine and is married to writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson, refused to go on set.

I knew Wonder Man was casted but didn't realize that the show was in production. I didn't even realize it was a show at this point. Also didn't know PT Anderson was married to Maya Rudolph.

honestly, if you work in an industry where your job could even POSSIBLY be either reproduced and/or "enhanced" by AI (unless your job involves physically moving things, that probably means you), a strike is probably something you want to consider sooner rather than later.

You mean don’t wait until your employers can call your bluff by replacing you with running a script?

The Writers Guild of America has gone on strike to fight for better terms for its members. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was due to begin filming its third season on May 2nd, the same day that strike action began. Without writers on sets and writers' rooms closing down, TV and Film projects have begun halting production. Canadian Film and TV Unions also stand in solidarity with the WGA, impacting US productions...

So Writers are already on strike, an almost 100% probability that actors will be next, then we still have directors, producers, and editors ... so what's the over/under for Hollywood to grind to a halt by July 4th?

Directors are starting their contracts next month (June) with Actors right behind in July. So it's entirely possible things will come to a halt this summer, maybe not by July 4th. The Suits seem to drawing a line in the sand. Crazy shit right now. Maybe this is why Zsalav pulled this shit on Max.

The financial issues regarding streaming as addressed in this investor lawsuit are very much part and parcel of why the studios would rather cut their own throats that give the writers/actors financial transparency.

The suit takes aim at former CEO Bob Chapek's lofty subscriber growth and profitability targets for Disney+. The entertainment giant faces a host of litigation dealing with efforts to boost subscriptions for its streaming service.

As Disney stock hovers at its lowest levels in nearly a decade, the company was hit with another lawsuit alleging it misled investors about the success of Disney+ by concealing the true costs of operating the platform.

Disney is being accused of lying about the extent of its losses to hit lofty subscriber growth targets and claiming that the streaming service was on track to achieve profitability by the end of 2024. Investors detail a scheme to “inappropriately shift costs” by debuting content created for Disney+ on legacy platforms to move marketing and production costs.

The complaint filed on Aug. 23 in California federal court is at least the third taking issue with the company’s efforts to boost subscriptions for its streaming platform. It faces an identical investor suit over an alleged “cost-shifting scheme” in its streaming division and claims that it obstructed a deal between TSG Entertainment Finance and 20th Century Studios, which Disney owns, to “prop up” Disney+ and inflate its stock price.

The suit claims that company executives hid the expense and difficulty of maintaining subscriber growth as it suffered “staggering costs” to create content. In an effort to hide losses, the complaint claims, former chief executive Bob Chapek, his lieutenant Kareem Daniel and former CFO Christine McCarthy aired The Mysterious Benedict Society and Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. — which were supposed to be Disney+ originals — on the Disney Channel to make the streaming service appear more successful than it actually was.

Investors take issue with statements from the executives touting gains. For example, in December 2020 Chapek said, “Disney+ has exceeded our wildest expectations with 86.8 million subscribers as of December 2” and that the “success” of the platform has “bolstered our confidence in our continued acceleration towards a DTC-first business model.” He repeatedly stated that it would be profitable by the end of 2024. This forecast represented an “astounding three-fold increase from prior estimates without any degradation in expected profitability for the segment,” the suit says.
