Top 10 of all time?

Playing Spider-man Miles Morales pc now and realizing these games are definitely in my top 10 of all time and also thinking of GOAT for this year has me thinking of this and thought it would be fun to do this as we haven’t in awhile.

My current top 10 and the rules I bend to get there:

Super Mario World (likely not beatable)

Super Mario 64 (likely only beatable by open world mushroom kingdom or something)

Castlevania SOTN

MGS2

God of War 2018

Mass Effect Trilogy (legendary edition makes this choice more legit now!)

Spider-man 2018/Miles (Since Miles directly continued and is not a full sequel Im allowing this)

Elden Ring

Zelda: LTTP

Life is Strange

Im not sure where Ragnarock will fit in as I’m still really early. It’s not as impactful as 2018 was but might be a better game, but it is such a direct continuation, like with ME/SM I’ll probably just add a /.

Sone of the new choices might shift around like until playing Miles again I would have said Elden Ring over Spider-man, but is it really? After beating Spider-man and Miles, I still find myself playing them, not sure if I’ll ever do that for ER beyond an expansion. Life is Strange is the softest choice but I couldn’t think of anything else yet I want to put ahead, with Hellblade being the closest I could think of, or Hotel Dusk series or something.

This was actually a lot easier than I thought when I started this thread! But when I think of gaming these cover a lot of what I love. Crazy how low LTTP is getting, gaming just continues to be so awesome.

I haven’t thought about this in several years.  I don’t think much recently would make it for me, and I’ve played some fantastic stuff. Maybe Hades if anything, that game truly fires on all cylinders.  Hollow Knight potentially as well.

Smash Bros Melee, StarCraft, Xenoblade 1 and Mario Galaxy 2 (the best Mario game full stop IMO) would all make the cut.

hmm, it is really hard to give a real top 10

1. FFXIV

2. LoZ: WW

3. LoZ: OoT

4. Dark Souls

5. Dragon Age: Origins

6. DOOM Eternal

7. Bloodborne

8. Halo 3

9. Fable Anniversary

10. Gears of War (unless I think of something better)

Now, I'm not saying these are necessarily the best games I have ever played, but probably the most important. Like, FFXIV is in no way the actual greatest video game of all time, but I have more time invested into it than all of the other games in my top 10 combined.

Halo 3 and Gears of War was my teenage years.

Damn you liked Eternal that much huh.

It isn't my favorite game of all time. Hell, I didn't even do more that one play-thru. And I think the story, plot, themes, and such are weaker than in DOOM 2016 and I much prefer 2016's realistic less arcade-y enemy design. The DOOM Slayer (2016) is far cooler than Doom Guy (Eternal).

But despite all of that, I have never played a more perfect game. It's the only game I think I have played that could get a 10/10 because the gameplay is perfect. Every other thing becomes irrelevant.

Fallout 3 was important game for me as well. I had never played a game like it and I loved it at the time. Even though it was a single player game, I made good friends on XBL because of it. But like, I feel mentally sick when I try to replay it. Something about it is so off putting to me now. New Vegas had the same issue. I had to force myself to beat it because people said it was so good, and I just can't bring myself to like it.

Call me crazy, but I actually think Banjo Kazooie is better.  It’s aged much better, at least.

I don’t find the platforming all that fun in Banjo, I did like it though. But Mario is far more fun to control.

Edit: To clarify, by beat, I just mean in my rankings. I don’t think Mario 64 remains the best Mario 3D platformer, I think that’s Odyssey now or 3d World + BF if I can count that as one game.

I felt the same with fallout 3. Nv never clicked with me though. Barely played it.

Sequels generally don’t make my top lists even if they are better games because they don’t achieve that wow factor and the birth of a great story.  However, despite halo 1 having that wow factor, halo 3 had the multiplayer wow factor that truly got me into multiplayer games.  Mass effect is also different because I truly liked the story the best, it’s style and it’s more rpg style of gameplay.  Also,Witcher 3 is simply better than 2

and we just won’t go into the dragon age sequels (especially 2)

Final Fantasy VI

The Witcher 3

Silent Hill 2

Chrono Trigger

The Last of Us

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Batman: Arkham Asylum

God of War 2018

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Super Mario World

After the first three, the order isn't really set in stone. But that's a pretty general list of my all time favorites off the top of my head.

Seeing some great picks in here my list is purely single player games I can't wrap my head around a list that includes fighting games or shooters I love.

1. Castlevania: SotN

2. Final Fantasy VI

3. Super Metroid

4. Persona 3 FES

5. Ninja Gaiden Black

6. Final Fantasy Tactics

7. Horizon Zero Dawn

8. Stellaris

9. Steel Battalion

10. Metal Gear Rising Revengeance

Honorable Mention: Rez Infinite

@silentbob Burnout 2 and 3 are hard for me to pick between.

Banjo felt like a chore to play as a kid. 64 was way better for fun.

Later Rare platformers were more of a chore.  The first Banjo strikes the best balance between collectibles and challenge of any 3D platformer I can think of.  It still feels polished to play.

Mario 64 is more fun to dick around in, but there’s a finickiness to its controls (and camera) that hasn’t aged well.  I could say similar things about other well regarded classics like Super Metroid, but at least in that case, the underlying game is better.

I’d have to sit down and really look at some games and think about it, but just to get some names down and trying to keep it varied it would look something like this:

Final fantasy 7

Dark Souls

Skyrim

Metal Gear Solid 3

Mario Bros 3

GTA SA

Dragon Quest 8

RE 2

PUBG

Tony Hawk 3

At the very least these games would all be in contention to make my list.

Tough one that always changes. I will say the latest addition is absolutely Returnal. It's kind of everything great about gaming in one package.

Literally the game I'm getting into right now.  I'm enjoying the atmosphere almost to a fault, where I just want to play it slow but can't.

Think I'll go do another run right now.

Prolly should put that on my list at 10 instead of gears. My very first username ever, which was also my IGN account, was because of that game.

It's the GOAT and I'm  afraid they are going to screw up the remake of it. Hopefully they don't. 2 and 3 were good but 4 imo doesn't need a remake.
