Sounds exactly like people expecting a Western with Assassination so I'll definitely give it a go. It sounds really interesting based on your description. I like talky films if the talk is good. Jackie Brown is one of my favorite movies, so.

I actually saw Chopper right when it was released on video in the States. Rented it three times. I've also seen one of his Cave docus which was certainly pretty good as far as I recall but nothing that particularly stuck out. I've actually been into select albums by Nick Cave for ages but I think his stuff with Ellis actually ended up being my favorite. Tender Prey would be a fantastic album by Cave if the mix wasn't so monumentally fucked up, still some great tracks on that if you can do his idea of "singing".

I think that's a great description - it's like going into Assassination expecting a Western. It's idiosyncratic and strange and beautifully filmed and interesting. And the opening has a genuine sense of horror that is so good - it's like screaming into the void of failing capitalism. Jackie Brown is another great example, I'm with you there. People feel Killing Them Softly meanders and is sort of disjointed and doesn't have a propulsive plot and I'd argue that's the entire point of the film. It's also very darkly funny a lot of the time. If you do see it let us know what you thought.

As for the Nick Cave docs, I'm with you that I love his work, but his work with Warren Ellis in stuff like The Proposition (love that film - John Hillcoat), Assassination, The Road, Hell or High Water, Wind River, etc. are really good, as you say. His first one, "One More Time With Feeling", is about Cave working through music while going through grief over the accidental drug death of his 15-year old son, which sounds pretty intense, but has rave reviews. His second one, "This Much I Know To Be True", also has great reviews, but yeah I've seen neither.

I totally forgot about The Proposition and yeah, I also really dug that movie. I kept thinking of it when watching Bone Tomahawk, not sure if it really had much to do with it at all but it also was very "doomy" and sparse as far as I recall. Only saw it once so far.

Regarding Cave, if you're interested in him, this is a cool TV docu from '87

I definitely see plenty of similarities between The Proposition and Bone Tomahawk. Really loved that film too, and all of S. Craig Zahler's films really, including Brawl in Cell Block 99 (just an amazing Vince Vauhn performance) and Dragged Across Concrete (what a fucking great movie no one talks about).

I haven't seen either, the titles sound like straight-to-7/11-DVD-rack level shit. But now reading them again...they sound kind of awesome.
