Your most anticipated games that never materialized / were total buzz kills?

Brawl has redeemable bits, and plenty of fan service.  But for everything that was actually supposed to make it fun to play with other people, I don't think I've ever been let down so hard from announcement to release.

Pre-release was already a roller coaster.  Its stealth announcement in the middle of an E3, with Snake, was insane.  So were the daily dev blog updates, suggesting that everything in the game was given a painstaking amount of thought and care.  Topping it off, it was going to be online for the first time.  Then cracks started to appear: It looked much slower paced.  Hands-on impressions were mixed.  A lot of movement options from the last game were removed or dumbed down.  But it's its own game right?  Being different wasn't enough to dismiss it as worse.  It could just be more streamlined.  Plus, people weren't used to playing it yet.

In the end, the game was designed to feel like you were sprinting in sticky molasses, with a random chance to fall on your ass whenever you tried any quick motion from the ground (no joke!).  Being an unresponsive mess was said to be part of the design, justified as a balancing philosophy for new players vs veterans.  IMO, the real reason must have had more to do with making it pseudo-playable with the shoddy netcode.

And boy, they failed at that spectacularly too.  Brawl ran like total ass online, even in 1vs1s with all items off.  So naturally, they limited random matchmaking to 4-player free for alls.  With everything that could lag it up even more thrown in.  Their servers took forever to match you up.  Once you're in?  You get 2 minutes.  Well. more like 3 minutes after all the lag.
Brawl online = fuck your idea of fun, you'll enjoy our shit broken as can be, with no regard for your time.

On the topic of brokenness, the new Smash Ball's implementation was pretty much ruined by terrible balance (Sucks for you if you picked Zero Suit Samus!).  And in general, there's a surprising amount of jank that should have been caught:

The thing reviewers harped on the most at the time - the single player Subspace Emissary - has ironically aged the best.  But you should probably just play any Kirby game instead.

Most dissapointed game I’ll never get:  Too Human 2

Most dissapointed game that was canceled: Starcraft Ghost

Most dissapointed game that was released:  Diablo III, I’ve never been so excited for a game and then so let down by it. Obviously they went on to fix the game and make it as great as I’d hoped. But my god what a dissapointment that first month with the game was.

Sorry, but Dark Souls II was the absolute worst fucking buzzkill to ever occur in my gaming life. It's probably objectively not bad, but it's basically the opposite of what I wanted in a Dark Souls sequel.

1. The downgrade/bullshots were so extreme, I couldn't believe the screens they were posting a few weeks prior to launch and I decided to ignore the obvious warning.

2. Right off the bat, the art is way more generic Lord of the Rings than eccentric, creepy and out there...a massive turn off for me.

3. Graphics are all over the place ranging from Majula looking pretty to absolute PS2-launch-title dog shit and borderline unfinished.

4. Quantity vs. Quality; eight thousand areas, 90% of them ugly as sin and thematically jarring.

5. World design; Iron Keep/Earth Peak, enough said.

6. Combat felt off, floaty and not as hard hitting as Demon's nor Dark 1, what the fuck?

7. Constant mobs...stop. Did you like 2 tower gargoyles? Here are 18 lulz fuck you

There is so much more, I just feel like I don't know where to start. Like I said, I feel like I would've been totally into this game if Demon's and Dark prior hadn't been hugely important and the real deal for me. They literally reignited my passion for video games as a whole.

But wait...the party ain't over, here comes Buzzkill Round #2!!!!!

Holy shit guys, I bet with this PS4 version they're totally going to give us the original pre-downgrade version that had the lighting, killer graphics and.......NOPE FUCK YOU PAY FOR ANOTHER FULL PRICED GAME WITH EVEN WORSE ENEMY PLACEMENT, MOBS AND UPGRADED "HD" PS2 GRAPHICS LOLLLLLLL. I was too pissed to even entertain buying it anyway, but just saying!

Praise hail Satan for Bloodborne...

Dark Souls 2 was a massive disappointment. I think the combat is an overreaction to the first games PVP in which it was heavily parry and backstab fishing, so they slowed it down. Way too fucking much. Then yeah, boring and horrible world design and shitty graphics. I did like the branching paths you could take in the beginning at least.

Well, it all boils down to this for me at the end of the day: the first two games were loaded with that magic, that special glue and silver line through it all that made them more than just another good game for me. Dark Souls II just failed miserably at that as far as I'm concerned and feels like a poor imitation by a studio that had no idea what made the originals so special.
