I have this dumb rule where I tend to play every game of a series in order.   I want to play Origins, but haven't played Unity or Syndicate yet...... Might have to finally break my rule.

I love the AC games -- but there are too many in this series to finish them all...  I've finished almost all of the games... I only got half way through Liberation and Unity, and never touched Bloodlines, Rogue or the Chronicles games....

Syndicate is worth a play.  Unity is not...

All of the talk about Zelda not being as good as an Assassin's Creed game...

Breath of the Wild is not just "Zelda but open world", it's a near-flawlessly designed game that fulfills the promise of the open-world concept in a way that nothing else has been able to.  The game offers nearly limitless freedom in movement; every inch of the map is explorable, and most importantly it's worth exploring.  The perfect density of the structures and natural elements of the world ensure that the player feels this freedom, while also offering a diversity array of gameplay experiences everywhere the player goes.

The design of the world alone would be worth celebrating, but it's the way that players can interact organically with all of its elements that is truly noteworthy; the world itself (and its natural elements: fire, water, wind, ice) become the player's greatest asset, and make for some of the best emergent gameplay that I've ever experienced.  Some of the gameplay elements that people have complained about (cooking, weapon durability) were designed precisely to ensure that the player attempts to creatively solve problems rather than stick to a single strategy.  To top it off, the game throws the idea of "leveling" away, because the core gameplay is so good that that having to level-up your character would be unnecessary and superfluous.

I haven't played Assassin's Creed: Origins, so I can't speak to its quality.  If you like that game more, that's awesome, and I appreciate the fact that Zelda is only one of several incredible games released this year.  But Breath of the Wild is a reinvention, not just of the franchise, but of the idea of what's possible in a sandbox game.  It is to open-world games what Mario 64 was to 3D games: an evolutionary leap for the medium, and a new benchmark for the rest of the industry.

So why even write the rest?

Because I have a hard time imagining that it will have the same influential impact as Breath of the Wild.  I've played several Assassins Creed games - does it deviate significantly from the rest of them?

From what I understand, yes.
