DOJ seizes the Epic of Gilgamesh from Hobby Lobby

Recommended Posts

Apparently Hobby Lobby has illegally smuggled in thousands of ancient artifacts into the US, and this is only the most recent case against them:

Several shipments of the artifacts were seized by US customs agents in 2011, triggering a years-long struggle between Hobby Lobby and the federal government that culminated in a 2017 civil forfeiture case United States of America v. Approximately Four Hundred Fifty Ancient Cuneiform Tablets and Approximately Three Thousand Ancient Clay Bullae. As a result of the case, Hobby Lobby agreed to return the artifacts and pay a fine of US$3,000,000. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement returned 3,800 items seized from Hobby Lobby to Iraq in May 2018.[2] In March 2020 the Hobby Lobby president agreed to return 11,500 items to Egypt and Iraq.

Many of these relics were procured from middlemen who potentially obtained them from the freakin' Islamic State who looted them from Iraqi museums in areas they took over such as Mosul.

In other words, the evangelical Christian-aligned Hobby Lobby could very well have had dealings -- however indirectly -- with the Islamist jihadists of the Islamic State.
