I feel like Schumer used to be much harder on drug laws. In a Milestone, Schumer Will Propose Federal Decriminalization of Marijuana - The New York Times WWW.NYTIMES.COM Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader, will offer draft legislation to remove marijuana from the list of controlled substances and begin regulating and taxing it. Pretty funny that "moderates" are totally out of the mainstream.

It would be neat to see at least one state make it to the finish with a governor willing to sign it. Update: Illinois breaks the losing streak this year and will become the first legislature to legalize a commercial marijuana market.

The first recreational cannabis to be legally bought in Canada was purchased at midnight on Wednesday (02:30 GMT) on the eastern island of Newfoundland amid queues of hundreds of people. Canada has become the second country after Uruguay to legalise possession and use of recreational cannabis. Medical marijuana has been legal in the country since 2001. But concerns remain, including about the readiness for police forces to tackle drug impaired driving.
