  1. Looks like we're starting the spring season early. You don't normally see anime start popping up for another week or two, but we've got one videogame tie in that needs sorting out. Unfortunately, Toriyama didn't make it in time to see a wider audience enjoy his wildly under-appreciated Mad Max meets Dragon Ball short series. The first seven episodes are out on Hulu TODAY. The first 6 episodes of this new anime will recount the events as told in the 1999 manga. The seventh episode will begin a new arc Toriyama wrote specifically for this anime series. That arc will run for 7 episodes bringing the series to a total of 13 leading up to the release of the Sand Land game coming out April 26. Also coming out in April is Kaiju No.8... I've been reading the manga since the first chapter. This should do very good as anime, so here's hoping this adaptation is good. Who doesn't like stuff where folks are fighting kaiju while using kaiju parts to power their weapons and armor? Wait, is this actually another season of Black Butler? I had to look it up and sure enough, it's been a full decade since the last season... Speaking of anime that's a long time in the making, Fujiko Fujio is getting another new anime? You might not know the pair, but you've certainly at least heard or seen Doraemon at some point. It's been some 35 years since the last Time Patrol Bon anime. Now we've got a new season hitting Netflix in May... I am all for more Korean manhwa getting the anime treatment... Nerdy twig of a kid takes on all the bullies in town to rack up YouTube views. The first season of the manhwa was a ton of fun, so here's hoping this anime is too. For a moment, I thought we'd be seeing more manhwa getting animated, but nope, we've just got a manga sharing the same name of a wildly popular manhwa series that's still running. Let's blame an editor over at Kodansha for not Googling the name of their new manga. Either way, if you want more delinquents beating the shit out of each other, Wind Breaker will do that for you. What's the opposite of high school delinquents punching each other in the face? Some cute girls trying to form an anonymous musical group? Sure. If anything, Jellyfish Can't Swim at Night certainly has some pretty animation... Speaking of music, there's also Hi Dive's Whisper Me a Love Song. This one is more romance/drama, though... We've got to even out the world. Whisper Me a Love Song may be a rare lesbian romance anime, but you know what's even more rare? A gay romance anime, and we've got one coming up with Welcome Home...whose title Crunchyroll decided not to translate... Thinking about it, we aren't getting too many shoujo romance anime these days. We do have A Condition Call Love coming out next month... Let's not be ageist. Old people can love too in Grandpa and Grandma Turned Young Again streaming...who knows where... Am I missing any demographics? I guess elves deserve love in An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride... Fuck it, vampires are also allowed to love in Vampire Dormitory... Lot of romance and isekai anime this coming season. I'd link to all the isekai, but they've all got titles like... As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World... Chillin' in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers... I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince So I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability... There should be something for everyone. Oh! CLAMP has done some work for a new anime on Netflix? I have a hard time turning down new stuff from them, so I am definitely checking this one out...
  2. Just as long as those dreams involve going to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is building the world's first Dragon Ball Z theme park WWW.CNBC.COM Saudi Arabia's latest tourist attraction is set to recreate locations from the original Japanese anime series and feature more than 30 themed rides.
  3. The fall anime season was pretty damn good. I think my favorite was Pluto on Netflix. Seriously, you all should go watch that. Everyone was stuck on Scott P:ilgrim they missed the other best anime of the season, also on Netflix. Let's see what we have coming next year... Solo Leveling is probably the most hotly anticipated. I really wish more Korean webtoons were animated. I can think of a dozen that I think would make for absolutely sublime anime and Solo Leveling is one of them. We've got more Mashle coming our way... Chained Soldier is one of those "Japan, are you OK?" anime. Shocked this one is even getting an anime. Speaking of anime I didn't think would ever be made. Gushing over Magical Girels about a magical girl that discovers she has a kink for torturing magical girls? Let's get back to the world of the tame. Netflix is doing a simulcast for the latest entry in the weirdly crowded cooking isekai subgenre with Delicious in Dungeon... What the? We're actually getting more Blue Exorcist? We really doing the whole 6-7 years between seasons, aren't we? Speaking of a blue moon. Every few years Bones gets to step away from like My Hero Academia and Bungo Stray Dogs and do whatever they want. Last time around they gave us Carole & Tuesday and SK8 the Infinity. This time around we're getting Metallic Rouge... I've been looking forward to The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic because the premise is so dumb, I love it. My question: Does healing magic rewind injuries or speed up recovery? If it's the latter, I can totally buy using healing magic to get swole... I guess I should include some romcom here, even if this season doesn't have anything that really piques my interest. There is Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable... A Sign of Affection looks a little more mature, but seems to lean more toward the romance side of the genre. Why is it always the girls with a handicap in these? Eh...Season seems, fine-ish. Nothing really standing out, but that usually seems to be the case with the winter season.
  4. Renowned Anime And Game Artist Mutsumi Inomata Has Died WWW.FORBES.COM In further sad news, the remarkably talented anime and game artist Mutsumi Inomata has died. She most notably worked on the Tales series 🌹
  5. This is such a wildly random announcement that's it's now, probably, the only announced DC project I'm interested in right now. Warner Bros. Japan, WIT Studio Unveil Original Anime Series Suicide Squad ISEKAI Based on DC Characters WWW.ANIMENEWSNETWORK.COM Anime features Harley Quinn, Joker, Suicide Squad DC characters
  6. Takashi Miike Directs Anime of Onimusha Game Series WWW.ANIMENEWSNETWORK.COM Anime from Sublimation to use late actor Toshiro Mifune as model for Miyamoto Musashi
  7. Looks like AT&T is unloading some of its properties. Next on the chopping block is Crunchyroll which they've just sold to Sony for a little more than $1b... AT&T to Sell Crunchyroll to Sony’s Funimation for $1.175 Billion VARIETY.COM AT&T agreed to sell its Crunchyroll anime business to Sony's Funimation group for $1.175 billion in cash.
  8. Story here: https://www.theverge.com/2019/7/18/20698910/kyoto-animation-arson-attack-deaths-injuries-suspect Of all the animation studios to attack, someone attacks one of the few studios that actually treats its animators like human beings? This is completely senseless.
  9. Anime is huge — and we finally have numbers to prove it WWW.POLYGON.COM Polygon surveyed more than 4,000 people to demystify anime’s reach within the world of pop culture. Cue the infographics:
  10. Anime is full of great fights. What are the best of the best?
  11. Remember when Attack on Titan Season 4 was announced as a two cour season, with both parts aired a year apart due to COVID? And then the second part was split in two with the second half airing a year later? Well, it's a year later and that second half of the second half of season four will... Yes. Be split in half. Attack on Titan Final Season Part 3 Anime Set to Premiere on March 4, Will Be Split Into Two Halves - Crunchyroll WWW.CRUNCHYROLL.COM The time has come for the “Final Arc” of the Attack on Titan anime franchise with the official Twitter account for the series revealing that Attack on Titan Final Season Part At least this time, they're claiming both halves will air this year. I'm not sure how much I believe them, though. If the first half of the third half is airing in the spring season, then that means the second half of the third half has to air in the fall season. It's obviously not airing in the summer since that wouldn't be splitting the half of a half of a half in half. However, they aren't committing to fall 2023 and instead going with the nebulous "2023". Maybe they'll go for airing one episode in late December to claim they hit the date while airing 90% of the final 12.5% in the winter 2024 season. Either way, here's a teaser... As with when they first announced they were splitting the final season in half, I will continue to sit this out until everything is out. I just didn't realize I was going to be sitting here, still waiting, nearly three years later.
  12. Netflix funding an anime remake starting in East Blue using studio Wit. I am all for this. The original animation is rough and could definitely use a refresh. Add that One Piece anime has so much filler that it’s hard to recommend it to anyone. Netflix can create the definitive version similar to the treatment Hunter X Hunter got.
  13. What are your favorite currently running manga?
  14. The shorts announced at the event, and the studios working on them, include: The Duel by Kamikaze Douga (Batman Ninja) Lop & Ocho by Geno Studio (Golden Kamuy) Tatooine Rhapsody by Studio Colorido (A Whisker Away) The Twins and The Elder by Trigger (Kill La Kill) The Village Bride by Kinema Citrus (Tokyo Magnitude 8.0) Akakiri and T0-B1 by Science Saru (Japan Sinks) The Ninth Jedi by Production IG (Ghost in the Shell)
  15. The summer anime season was a little quiet for me, so let's see if there's anything that'll really spark my interests... Well, look at that, Goblin Slayer is finally back... Frieren is getting an anime. The manga is one of those series that's been on my to read list for a while... There's a second half of season three of Dr Stone... Spy x Family is back. The first season was pretty damn amazing, so this should be fun. After an isekai about a dude that became a vending machine, how about one where he became a...pig? A second season for polyamory romcom whose manga ended too soon which led the author to lose all his money and end up having to move back in with his parents because he refuses to sell his watches and instead wrote a book about the entire ordeal to avoid having to draw more manga and also maybe afford a bunch of new watches? Is that an honest to god sequel to Initial D I see? Hey, here's an isekai I'm actually interested in... Correction, I guess there are two isekai I'm interested in this coming season... Hey, Eminence is Shadow is back... An Osamu Tezuka series is getting an anime on Netflix? Yeah, I'll check that out... Castlevania is back, but that already happened... There's also more FLCL coming...even if I could never get into any of the newer series since the 2000 original... Also, yeah, I know this is an old trailer, but folks swear Uzumaki is coming out this year and the fall anime season is the last season of the year. It's either coming in the next few months or being delayed into 2024... OK, this season has some stuff that's way more interesting than last season.
  16. While the rest of the media world is doing its own thing, Sony had slowly being going around buying up every anime distributor they can. Looks like RightStuf is the latest victim. Crunchyroll Purchases Anime Retailer Right Stuf WWW.ANIMENEWSNETWORK.COM Right Stuf will continue to sell products from different companies For those that don't know, RightStuf is one of the largest online anime retailers in the US and in much of the world outside of Japan. They also own the distribution rights to a ton of classic anime along with a studio in Nozomi Entertainment to handle localization efforts. They were also, maybe, the largest distributor of, ahem, adult anime and merchandise in North America. True to Sony's prudish ways, the adult stuff will be no more as RightStuf has already pulled all 18+ items from their online store.
  17. I figured this deserved its own thread. Consider this a minor spoiler for Mobile Suit Gundam: Witch from Mercury. Minor because there are really only two conclusions to this series after the first episode tells us that same sex marriages are only opposed by conservatives living out in the sticks. Series was either ending in death or a marriage...or as Bandai wants everyone to know something that is maybe "up for interpretation". Bandai Namco Filmworks Wanted Suletta and Miorine's Relationship Left to Interpretation in G-Witch WWW.ANIMENEWSNETWORK.COM Interview in Gundam Ace magazine September 2023 digital issue altered to remove 'marriage' Here's the TLDR on the setup within the anime. In G-Witch's first episode the two female leads are engaged. By the series end they are very clearly married. They both have rings, they're cuddling in a field, and they refer to each other's family as in-laws. Prior to this, there was talk about the two getting matching wedding dresses. The series directors, writers, editors, and voice actors are all in agreement that they're married. This shouldn't be up for debate. Here's the TLDR on the bullshit. An interview in Gundam Ace magazine threw this all into disarray. One of the actresses in the series talks about the leads' marriage. The magazine suddenly tried to wipe any mention of this. There was instant fan backlash toward the magazine in question with many fans wondering if this was to appease China. However, Bandai came out and wanted everyone to know it's not the magazine's fault, but happened on their request. Bandai's stance is that everyone that worked on the series is wrong and the leads' relationship should be "open to interpretation" and they aren't necessarily married. I'm sure history will tell us they were very good friends.
  18. We're looking at a Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood-style reboot here. This isn't the only anime coming back this season. We've also got season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen... There's more Horimiya, though not exactly a season 2... Bleach is back, again... Baki is back... There's also some great looking anime that's either coming or has already begun. The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses... Zom 100... I love these games, so it's great to see Atelier Ryza getting its own shine... Let's also not forget the GOAT of the summer anime season. Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon... If that, alone, didn't convince you into subscribing to Crunchyroll, I don't know what will.
  19. Adult Swim Orders ‘Lazarus,’ New Animated Series From ‘Cowboy Bebop’ Director Shinichirō Watanabe VARIETY.COM Shinichirō Watanabe is creating "Lazarus," a new series for Adult Swim.
  20. The greatest show ever gets a second season? 🙇 New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Anime Project Announced at TRIGGER - Crunchyroll WWW.CRUNCHYROLL.COM Image from Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt's first anime The Hiroyuki Imaishi-directed crass parody of the animation genre returns with a brand new project for
  21. There has been some good anime this past season. I've been really enjoying both Trigun Stampede and, shockingly, the Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World. The latter looks way too much like the kind of anime I'd normally skip, but this series is absolutely bingeable. Both of are wrapping up later this week. Then only other anime I watched this season was Don't Toy with Me Nagatoro, which continues the disgustingly sweet wholesome streak it started mid-season one; along with The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady. What a stupid mouthful. That was a ton of fun with an actual lesbian romance. It's been years since I remember an anime with very clearly out in the open queer leads. Let's see what looks interesting for this coming season... Hey, Dr Stone is back... As is Gundam the Witch from Mercury... As is Ranking of Kings... MAPPA has Hell's Parade coming up and this one looks pretty good... I've been meaning to read Oshi no Ko, but maybe I'll let the anime kick things off for me... An actual lesbian romcom with Yuri is My Job? I'd wonder where all the gay ones are, but those manga and light novels are all getting live action adaptations... Too Cute Crisis is such a dumb premise and would only make sense if it were about dogs. An alien comes down to destroy Earth but then discovers cats are awesome? Some fun looking slice of life in Skip and Loafer... I've also heard pretty good things about Insomniacs After School... Looks like there's a little bit of something for everyone this coming season. Personally, I think I'll start with Gundam, Ranking of Kings, Oshi no Ko, and...Skip and Loafer? We'll see. Every season there's always some series that pops up and takes me by surprise.
